USA South Athletes of the Week - Mar. 20, 2017

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Blake Butcher, LaGrange - The senior infielder from Wrightsville, Georgia went a combined 9-for-15 (.600) with a .600 on-base percentage and a 1.133 slugging percentage to go along with five runs scored, seven RBI, four doubles and two triples as the seventh-ranked Panthers notched a 3-0 week. In an 11-1 win over Stevens Institute, Butcher was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one run batted in and two doubles. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Averett, Butcher was a combined 6-for-10 with three runs scored, six RBI, two doubles and two triples. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Hunter Peck, Ferrum - The sophomore from Franklin, Virginia earned a complete-game victory over USA South foe Maryville, a 9-1 win, in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Panthers. Peck allowed one unearned run on four hits with zero walks and 12 strikeouts. Also Nominated: Josh Evans, Greensboro; Seth George, Piedmont; Zach McGrady, Huntingdon; Nick Norton, Methodist; Trevor Pence, William Peace; T.J. Wilkie, N.C. Wesleyan.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Derek Jaar, Greensboro - The freshman first baseman from St. Petersburg, Florida went a combined 4-for-6 (.667) with a .714 on-base percentage and a 1.167 slugging percentage in the two contests he appeared in last week, both victories over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan. Jaar added three runs scored, three RBI and his first career home run in the wins. Also Nominated: Jonathen Burkett, Piedmont; Matthias Carter, Methodist; Dominick Claxton, Ferrum; Drew Johnson, Maryville; Brad Pennington, N.C. Wesleyan; Wes Powell, Huntingdon; Matt Wall, Averett.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Sam Carpenter, Piedmont - The freshman from Gainesville, Georgia picked up his first-career complete-game win in a 12-3 victory over USA South foe Huntingdon in his only appearance on the mound for the Lions last week. Carpenter allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts. Also Nominated: Joe Logsdon, Maryville; Ross Skipper, Covenant; Michael Smith, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Hannah Hoban, Piedmont - The sophomore infielder from Phoenix, Arizona went a combined 12-for-17 (.706) with a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, one home run and one sacrifice fly as the Lions earned a 6-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott, Hoban was a combined 2-for-4 with one run scored, three RBI, one double and one sacrifice fly. In a doubleheader sweep of William Peace, Hoban was a combined 4-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of N.C. Wesleyan, Hoban was a combined 6-for-7 with one run scored, three RBI, one double and one home run. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Courtney Rudd, Ferrum - The junior from Mebane, North Carolina earned a 2-0 record in three appearances last week for the Panthers versus USA South competition. Rudd tossed a total of 15.0 shutout innings while allowing five hits without a walk and 20 strikeouts. In a 10-0, five-inning, victory over Agnes Scott, Rudd tossed a perfect game to go along with nine strikeouts. In another win over Agnes Scott, Rudd started the contest but tossed just three shutout innings, allowing three hits to record a no-decision. Finally, in a 4-0 victory over Wesleyan, Rudd went the distance and allowed no runs on two hits with zero walks and 11 strikeouts. Softball Rookie of the Week
Ashton Hayden, Maryville - The freshman outfielder from Hendersonville, Tennessee went a combined 11-for-18 (.611) with a .611 on-base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage out of the leadoff position to go along with two runs scored, three RBI and five stolen bases as the Scots earned a 2-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Covenant, Hayden was a combined 5-for-9 with one run scored, two RBI and four stolen bases. In two losses to Meredith, Hayden was a combined 6-for-9 with one run scored, one run batted in and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett; Cassie Collins, Greensboro; Madyson Gibbins, Covenant; Breanna Herman, Salem; Samantha Jacobs, Methodist; Ashton Lambeth, Ferrum; Kelsey Mabe, Meredith; Madison Martin, Piedmont; MacKenzie Smelley, Huntingdon.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Myah Morse, Meredith - The freshman from Ash, North Carolina earned a 3-0 record in three appearances, two complete-game starts, last week for the Avenging Angels versus USA South competition. Morse tossed a total of 16.1 innings and posted a 0.86 ERA while allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits with 13 walks and 11 strikeouts. In a 6-1 victory over Methodist, Morse went the distance and allowed one unearned run on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. In a 6-5, eight-inning, win over Maryville, Morse tossed the final 2.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Finally, in a 6-2 victory over Maryville, Morse allowed two runs on five hits with seven walks and six strikeouts over seven-complete innings. Also Nominated: Taylor Bailey, Averett; Brittany Nozet, Greensboro; Sydney Vaughn, Salem.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Jennifer Halvorson, Meredith - The Lorton, Virginia senior attacker totaled 13 points on 12 goals and one assist in a 3-0 week for the Avenging Angels. She also added two ground balls. In a 15-7 win over USA South foe Methodist, Halvorson notched four goals and one assist with one ground ball. In a 13-11 victory over previously unbeaten Scranton, Halvorson scored a game-high six goals, including the final one of the day with five minutes remaining to put the contest away, and added one ground ball. Finally, in a 21-5 win over Southwestern, Halvorson tallied two goals. Also Nominated: Kayla Jones, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Francesca Malabad, Piedmont - The Ocoee, Florida junior defender totaled eight ground balls, six caused turnovers, four draw controls and two goals in a 2-0 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 15-3 win over Ferrum, Malabad notched a game-high four draw controls with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and two goals. In a 12-7 victory over Greensboro, Malabad grabbed a game-high six ground balls and caused a team-high three turnovers. Also Nominated: Holly Hite, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Rowan Bumpass, Piedmont - The Keller, Texas freshman attacker tallied six points on five goals and one assist with two draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover in a 2-0 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 15-3 win over Greensboro, Bumpass notched two goals, one assist and one draw control. In a 12-7 victory over Greensboro, Bumpass totaled three goals, including the eventual game-winner, one draw control, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Casey Sprague, Meredith.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Eskilstuna, Sweden earned a straight-set victory at the number-one singles position over David Reed of nationally-ranked (28th) Christopher Newport as the Bishops earned a 5-4 victory in their only contest of the week. In doubles action, Sikh, along with partner Ioannis Brokakis fell, 9-7, at the top doubles spot. Also Nominated: Kevin Ramirez, Ferrum; Chris Cox, Covenant; Nathan Metzger, Piedmont; Justin McQueen, Huntingdon; Nicolas Quevedo, Averett.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Jackson Hill, Piedmont - The freshman from Marietta, Georgia earned a 2-0 singles record and a 2-0 mark at the number-one doubles spot last week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In singles play, at the number-three position, Hill defeated an opponent from Huntingdon while at the number-two spot, he topped a player from LaGrange. In doubles, Hill teamed with Nathan Metzger for the two victories. Also Nominated: David Appelqvist, N.C. Wesleyan; Riley Kern, Ferrum; Micah Fox, Covenant.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Aly Hall, Covenant - The junior from Orlando, Florida earned a 2-0 singles record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Scots. In singles play, Hall earned wins over opponents from USA South foe LaGrange and Emory & Henry. In doubles, Hall teamed with Esther Eddy to collect the two wins. Also Nominated: Maddie Hoffman, Agnes Scott; Alex Young, William Peace; Morgan Buchholz, Piedmont; Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Morgan Buchholz, Piedmont - The freshman from Sugar Hill, Georgia earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Lions versus USA South competition. Buchholz earned her singles wins over opponents from Salem and LaGrange. In doubles, Buchholz teamed with two different partners to collect the victories. Also Nominated: Lizzy Engsberg, Agnes Scott; Alex Young, William Peace; Morgan Scott, Ferrum; Esther Eddy, Covenant.
