USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 9, 2017

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Connor Blair, LaGrange - The senior quarterback from Ormond Beach, Florida threw for 500 yards and six touchdowns in a 51-44 victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan last week. Blair was 33-of-50 passing with an average of ten yards per completion. Also Nominated: Sean Bowman, Averett; E'Montie Dears, Methodist; Tolan Jones, Greensboro; Otis Porter, Huntingdon.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Miles Johnson, Averett - The freshman wide receiver from Mechanicsville, Virginia caught three passes for 28 yards in a 27-7 loss to USA South foe Huntingdon last week. Johnson averaged 9.3 yards per catch and gained 14 yards on his longest reception. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
EJ White, Methodist
 - The Mount Pleasant, North Carolina junior defensive back tallied a five solo tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a 41-16 victory over USA South rival Greensboro last week. With Methodist trailing in the second quarter, White caused a fumble, scooped it up and carried it 43 yards to set up an eventual Monarch score. Also Nominated: Dejon Brooks, Averett; Antonio Johnson, N.C. Wesleyan; Kenon Reynolds, Greensboro; Brandon Williams, Huntingdon.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Linell Tarver, Huntingdon - The freshman linebacker from Honolulu, Hawaii totaled six tackles in a 27-7 win over USA South foe Averett last week. Tarver collected three solo tackles and three assisted take downs in the victory. Also Nominated: None.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Chase Young, Huntingdon - The junior place kicker from Covington, Georgia made a career-long 40 yard field goal in a 27-7 victory over USA South foe Averett last week. Young also connected from 24 yards away while missing on a 45-yard attempt. He was a perfect 3-for-3 on point after touchdowns while four of his six kickoffs were touchbacks. Also Nominated: Jonathon Pfeiffer, Greensboro; Cole Westberry, Averett.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Baboucarr Njie, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore midfielder from Pipeline, The Gambia scored three goals with one assist in a 2-0 week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Averett, Njie tallied the first score of the game, thus the eventual game-winner. In a 9-0 victory over Brevard, Njie netted two goals and assisted on a third. Also Nominated: David Cuperman, Averett; Carlos Barragan, Greensboro; Josh Brower, Covenant; Ryan Jorgensen, Maryville; Chase Kane, Piedmont.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Ryan Jorgensen, Maryville - The junior goalkeeper from Maryville, Tennessee posted two shutouts as the Scots posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In 201 minutes in net, Jorgensen stopped all five shots he faced and now has not allowed a goal in the past 316 minutes played. In a 1-0, double-overtime, win over Brevard, Jorgensen tallied four saves. In a 1-0, overtime, victory over Methodist, Jorgensen grabbed one save. Also Nominated: Jonathan Crossman, Covenant; Sean Dunbar, Averett; Jared Heller, Greensboro; Jordan Williams, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Doug Thom, Methodist - The freshman defender from Lynchburg, Virginia tallied three goals as the Monarchs posted a 1-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 1-0, overtime, loss to Maryville, Thom was held scoreless. In a 6-0 victory over Berea, Thom notched his first career hat-trick with three goals. Also Nominated: Jordy Briceno, Greensboro; Aly Cadet, N.C. Wesleyan; Milan Card, Maryville; Eddie Gaspar, Piedmont; Tommi Vuorinen, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Cassidy Reich, Piedmont - The Largo, Florida junior forward tallied four goals, two of which were game-winners, in a 2-0 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 victory over Brevard, Reich scored the first goal of the match in the  59th minute and followed that up with the final tally in the 64th minute. In a 4-0 win over Wesleyan, Reich again scored the game's first goal before adding her second less than ten minutes later. Also Nominated: Capri Clark, Methodist; Hannah Clothier, Maryville; Caitlynn Croft, Agnes Scott; Mercedes Fisher, Greensboro; Jordan Lanier, Salem.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Miranda McNalley, Piedmont - The Atlanta, Georgia freshman goalkeeper did not allow a goal in a 2-0 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In 135 minutes in net, McNalley stopped all four shots she faced. In a 3-0 victory over Brevard, McNalley made four saves to secure the shutout. In a 4-0 win over Wesleyan, McNalley did not face a shot in the 45 minutes she appeared. Also Nominated: Marisa Camuto, Greensboro; Jasmine Romero-Mendieta, Salem; Sarah Wickman, Maryville.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Bailey Sipos, Maryville - The Knoxville, Tennessee freshman forward tallied three goals in a 4-0 week for the Scots versus USA South competition. In a 10-0 victory over Berea, Sipos scored the first, and thus eventual game-winning, goal of the match. In a 5-0 victory over Agnes Scott, Sipos again notched the first goal of the contest before adding an insurance score later. In wins over Covenant and Huntingdon, Sipos was held scoreless with three shots on goal. Also Nominated: Miranda McNalley, Piedmont; Jessika Schutte, William Peace; Alexa Smith, Methodist; Samantha Whipp, Greensboro.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Caroline Corey, Meredith - The sophomore outside hitter from Greenville, North Carolina averaged 4.86 kills, with a hitting percentage of .300, and 1.57 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-2 win over William Peace, Corey tallied a double-double of 27 kills and ten digs with one service ace. In a 3-2 victory over Methodist, Corey posted 21 kills, nine digs, one service ace and one block. Finally, in a 3-1 win over Ferrum, Corey totaled 20 kills and three digs. Also Nominated: Madelyn Chappell, Salem; Katelyn Durmire, Piedmont; Nia Haller, Maryville; Cassidy Hayes, Methodist; Paige Heck, Agnes Scott; Emily Horn, Greensboro; Jessica Seehorn, Covenant; Hannah Shields, Averett; Liana Solomon, William Peace; Amy Tyma, Huntingdon; Alexandra Wilkins, Berea.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Carson Williams, William Peace - The senior defensive specialist from Beulaville, North Carolina averaged 6.35 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 2-2 record last week. In a 3-2 loss to USA South foe Meredith, Williams tallied 27 digs and four assists. In a 3-2 loss to Virginia Wesleyan, Williams posted 29 digs and three assists. In a 3-1 win over USA South rival Salem, Williams notched 30 digs and two assists. Finally, in a 3-0 win over USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Williams totaled 22 digs, three assists and one service ace. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Flickinger, Maryville; Tori Belcher, Greensboro; Maggie Hawks, Salem; Haley Hixon, Piedmont; Emily Stanley, Averett; Bria Rochelle, Huntingdon; Hannah Stewart, Covenant.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Callie Cline, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman outside hitter from Stanfield, North Carolina averaged 2.80 kills, 3.30 digs and 0.90 blocks per set as the Bishops posted a 1-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-1 loss to Methodist, Cline tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs to go along with five blocks. In a 3-0 loss to Averett, Cline notched eight kills, 14 digs, three assists and one block. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Pfeiffer, Cline totaled nine kills, six digs, three service aces and three blocks. Also Nominated: Danyale Berry, Greensboro; McKenzie Miller, Averett; Amy Tyma, Huntingdon; Jenna Wendel, Piedmont; Alexandra Wilkins, Berea; Lauren Phillips, Meredith; Kathryn O'Connell, Salem.

 

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Logan McKenzie, Berea - The sophomore from Athens, Tennessee placed first out of 140 runners at the Kentucky Wesleyan University Fast Cats Invitational last week. McKenzie completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:16 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Bryce Griggs, Piedmont; Alfredo Garcia Huerta, Averett; Caleb Aikens, Covenant; Daniel Beckett, Maryville.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Caleb Aikens, Covenant - The freshman from Crossville, Tennessee placed 21st out of 157 runners at the Disney Classic last week. Aikens completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 27:25 helping the Scots to a sixth place team finish. Also Nominated: Kerry Jones, Berea; Will Hatchett, Piedmont; Kari Hassinen, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Lilly Smith, Covenant - The junior from Weaverville, North Carolina placed 40th out of 227 runners at the Disney Classic last week. Smith completed the 5,000-meter course in a personal best time of 19:48, helping the Scots to a sixth place team finish. Also Nominated: Reese Bowles, Piedmont; Caroline Diorio, Meredith; Faridah Nalunkuuma, Agnes Scott; Dove DeNigris, Berea.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Abigail Schlenker, Berea - The freshman from Glen Ellyn, Illinois placed 31st out of 114 runners at the Kentucky Wesleyan University Fast Cats Invitational last week. Schlenker completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:31, helping the Mountaineers to a third place team finish. Also Nominated: Heather Hall, Covenant; Haley Bolt, Piedmont.
