USA South Athletes of the Week - March 12, 2018

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Alex Kachler, Methodist - The sophomore catcher/designated hitter from Lithia, Florida went a combined 10-for-18 (.556) with a .600 on-base percentage and a .833 slugging percentage to go along with five runs scored, ten RBI, three doubles, one triple, two walks and one stolen base as the Monarchs notched a 4-0 record last week. In a 10-4 win over Guilford, Kachler was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, one run batted in, one triple and one stolen base. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Berea, Kachler was a combined 7-for-13 with two runs scored, nine RBI, three doubles and two walks. Also Nominated: Alec Allred, William Peace; Johnny Carpenter, Maryville; Taylor Fought, Huntingdon; Tyler Price, Greensboro; Jabin Smith, Piedmont; Dallas Smithers, Averett.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Derek Jackson, William Peace - The junior from Sanford, North Carolina earned a no-decision in a 1-0, ten-inning, win over USA South foe Ferrum in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Pacers despite carrying a no-hitter into the tenth inning. Jackson gave up hits to the first two batters in the tenth inning and finished with nine complete innings pitched allowing no runs on just the two hits with three walks and ten strikeouts. Also Nominated: Piero Amador, Greensboro; Colin Barrett, LaGrange; Tyler Brown, Methodist; Carden Mellown, Huntingdon; Cole Spain, Averett; Ryan Stewart, Piedmont; Ricky Ward, Maryville.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Parker Clayton, Methodist - The freshman infielder from Asheboro, North Carolina went a combined 5-for-11 (.455) with a .563 on-base percentage and a .455 slugging percentage to go along with seven runs scored, four RBI and four walks as the Monarchs notched a 4-0 record last week. In a 10-4 win over Guilford, Clayton was 1-for-2 with one run scored and one walk. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Berea, Clayton was a combined 4-for-9 with six runs scored, four RBI and three walks. Also Nominated: Blake Carroll, Greensboro; Rhett Mixon, LaGrange; Ryan Traylor, Averett.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Drew Tubb, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Tampa, Florida earned a complete-game victory in a 6-1 win over USA South rival Greensboro in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Battling Bishops. Tubb allowed one run on seven hits with zero walks and two strikeouts. Also Nominated: Cole Spain, Averett; Trevor Townsend, Maryville.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Taylor Tallant, LaGrange - The senior infielder from Loganville, Georgia went a combined 10-for-20 (.500) with a .500 on-base percentage and a .750 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, nine RBI, two doubles, one home run and one stolen base as the Panthers notched a 5-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Huntingdon, Tallant was a combined 3-for-7 with two runs scored, four RBI, one double and one home run. In a doubleheader sweep of Berea, Tallant was a combined 5-for-6 with two runs scored, three RBI and one stolen base. Finally, in a doubleheader split with Covenant, Tallant was a combined 2-for-7 with two RBI. Also Nominated: Eran Artigues, Meredith; Ashley Carbajal, Averett; Shade Epes, Covenant; Melissa Garcia, Greensboro; Hannah Hoban, Piedmont; Alyssa Singleterry, Huntingdon.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Maddy Wetherholt, Greensboro - The junior from Hope Mills, North Carolina earned a 3-0 record and a 0.41 ERA last week in three complete game victories in the circle for the Pride. In 17.0 innings pitched, Wetherholt allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on 11 hits with three walks and 17 strikeouts. Her victories came over St. Joseph's (L.I.) (2) and USA South foe Mary Baldwin. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett; Emily Cauldwell, LaGrange; Becca Eddins, Piedmont; Sarah Huskey, Covenant.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Ashley Carbajal, Averett - The freshman second baseman from Hacienda Heights, California went a combined 8-for-14 (.571) with a .571 on-base percentage and a .929 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, four RBI, three doubles and one triple as the Cougars posted a 2-2 record last week. In a doubleheader split with Guilford, Carbajal was a combined 4-for-7 with one run scored, three RBI and three doubles. In a doubleheader split with USA South rival Ferrum, Carbajal was a combined 4-for-7 with two runs scored, one run batted in and one triple. Also Nominated: Oliva Oates, William Peace; Madison Perryman, Huntingdon; Brittany Todd, LaGrange; Jasmine Worthy, Greensboro.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Cheyanne Cox, Greensboro - The freshman from Burlington, North Carolina earned a 3-0 record and a 2.00 ERA last week in three complete game victories in the circle for the Pride. In 21.0 innings pitched, Cox allowed six earned runs on 19 hits with five walks and 36 strikeouts. Her victories came over St. Joseph's (L.I.) (2) and USA South foe Mary Baldwin. Cox struck out at least ten batters in each appearance including a single-game school-record 15 in one of the wins over St. Joseph's (L.I.). Also Nominated: Becca Eddins, Piedmont; Dani Kahn, Averett.

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Matt Layden, Methodist - The Apopka, Florida senior attacker totaled five goals and five assists to go along with nine ground balls and two caused turnovers in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs. In an 18-3 win over Randolph, Layden scored three goals and added an assist with four ground balls. In a 10-3 victory at Wesley, Layden notched two goals, four assists, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Ryan Cole, Greensboro; Keshawn Downing, Averett; Brady Jenks, Piedmont; Mac Puller, Huntingdon.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Clay Stevenson, Methodist - The Milford, Delaware sophomore goalkeeper collected two victories in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs. In a total of 98:31 played, Stevenson allowed 2.44 goals per game while stopping 16 shots. In an 18-3 win over Randolph, Stevenson made seven saves while in a 10-3 victory at Wesley, Stevenson totaled nine stops. Also Nominated: Patrick Bell, Greensboro; Sam Hitt, Huntingdon; Lamont Nesbitt, Piedmont; Jacob Shriver, Averett.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Patrick Bell, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman midfielder collected 30-of-40 faceoffs, as well as 18 ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In a 7-6 win over Hilbert, Bell was 13-of-17 in faceoffs with six ground balls. In a 14-8 victory over Dallas, Bell was 17-of-23 in faceoffs with 12 ground balls. WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Caitlin O'Brien, Piedmont - The Peachtree City, Georgia senior midfielder scored 11 goals with four assists, 11 draw controls, ten ground balls and nine caused turnovers as the Lions posted a 3-0 record versus USA South competition last week. In a 21-2 win over Huntingdon, O'Brien scored twice with two assists, seven draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. In a 21-5 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, O'Brien totaled two goals, one assist, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and one draw control. Finally, in a 20-19, overtime, win over Greensboro, O'Brien notched seven goals, including the game-winner, with one assist, three draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Also Nominated: Holly Hite, Meredith; Alixis Roccia, Averett; Collette Vladimery, Salem; Laine Walston, Greensboro.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Breanne Sawall, Averett - The Waldorf, Maryland freshman goalkeeper collected two victories in a 2-0 week for the Cougars. In a total of 120 minutes played, Sawall allowed 6.50 goals per game while stopping 17 shots. In an 18-6 win over Chatham, Sawall made eight saves while in a 9-7 victory over Brevard, Sawall totaled nine stops. Also Nominated: Sydney Hardee, Meredith; Mattie Keaton, Piedmont; Hannah Ostlund, Salem; Stefania Robba, Greensboro.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Emma Fransen, Piedmont - The Cypress, Texas freshman attacker scored 11 goals with six assists, four draw controls and one ground ball as the Lions posted a 3-0 record versus USA South competition last week. In a 21-2 win over Huntingdon, Fransen scored four goals. In a 21-5 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Fransen totaled three goals, four assists, four draw controls and one ground ball. Finally, in a 20-19, overtime, win over Greensboro, Fransen notched four goals and two assists. Also Nominated: Lilia Cruz, Meredith; Alexandra Cucinotta, N.C. Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior from Eskilstuna, Sweden earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and number-three doubles positions last week for the Battling Bishops. The singles victories came over opponents from Pfeiffer and Division II Mercyhurst. In doubles, Sikh teamed with David Change to earn the wins. Also Nominated: Daniel Silva, Maryville; Douwe Sternfeld, Averett; Nathan Metzger, Piedmont; Dylan Betancourt, William Peace; Mitchell Corley, LaGrange.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Dylan Betancourt, William Peace - The freshman from Garner, North Carolina earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Pacers. The singles victories came over opponents from Emory & Henry and USA South foe Ferrum. In doubles, Betancourt teamed with Patrick Ralph for the wins. Also Nominated: Roberto Puig, N.C. Wesleyan; Douwe Sternfeld, Averett; Taylor Galloway, Covenant; Carlos Valdez, LaGrange.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Ashton Walker, Methodist - The junior from Goldsboro, North Carolina earned a 4-0 record at various singles positions and a 3-0 record a various doubles spots last week for the Monarchs. The singles victories came over opponents from Wilkes, Nebraska Wesleyan, William Woods and Spring Arbor. In doubles, Walker teamed with Laura Brown to defeat teams from Wilkes, Nebraska Wesleyan and Lawrence Tech. Also Nominated: Kayla Zimmerman, Maryville; Makenna Mason, Salem; Annie DeLuca, Covenant; Jenna Eppes, LaGrange.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Kayla Zimmerman, Maryville - The freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee earned a 2-0 record at both the number-two singles and number-one doubles positions last week for the Scots. The singles victories came over opposition from Ohio Christian and LaGrange while, in doubles, Zimmerman teamed with Anastasia Dunn for the wins. Also Nominated: Lauren Holman, Salem; Laura Brown, Methodist.
