USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 3, 2018

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Trey Lancaster, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior wide receiver from Clinton, Maryland caught 11 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns including the game-winner in a 35-28 win over Thomas More last week. Lancaster caught a 46-yard TD pass with less than a minute remaining in the game to help secure the victory. Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Kobe Praylow, Methodist - The freshman wide receiver from Pamplico, South Carolina caught three passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-33 loss to Shenandoah last week. Praylow also helped on special teams as he returned three kickoffs for 124 yards. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Kasseem Bagley, Greensboro
 - The Lawrenceville, Georgia junior safety recorded 12 solo tackles, one for a loss, and one interception in a 34-14 loss to Apprentice last week. Bagley's interception came in the first quarter, was returned 27 yards and set-up the Pride's opening score of the game. Also Nominated: Dejon Brooks, Averett; Justin Santiago, Methodist.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Justin Santiago, Methodist - The freshman safety from Greensboro, North Carolina totaled seven tackles, two for a loss of yardage, in a 48-33 loss to Shenandoah last week. Santiago collected three solo tackles and four assisted take downs. Also Nominated: Joseph Ledbetter, Averett.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Bradley Jefferson, Averett - The senior defensive back from Tignall, Georgia set the program and USA South record for the longest kickoff return with a 100-yard effort in a 33-14 win over Hampden-Sydney. Jefferson also helped the Cougars with six tackles and one interception. Also Nominated: Kobe Praylow, Methodist.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Darli Mihindou, Greensboro - The sophomore midfielder from Greensboro, North Carolina tallied three goals in a 1-1 week for the Pride. In a 6-1 loss to Christopher Newport, Mihindou was held scoreless. In a 4-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Mihindou tallied a hat trick by scoring Greensboro's first two goals and its final tally of the match. Also Nominated: Jose Linares, Piedmont; Jake Major, Covenant; Conor Morris, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Ryan Jorgensen, Maryville - The senior goalkeeper from Maryville, Tennessee posted a shutout in the Scots only contest last week, a 3-0 win over Millsaps. Jorgensen stopped all three shots to help Maryville begin the season win a victory. Also Nominated: Austin Bramhall, Averett; Cameron Earls, Piedmont; Tyler Hilbert, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Jude McEvoy, LaGrange - The freshman forward from London, England tallied two goals and one assist as the Panthers posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 4-1 win over Belhaven, McEvoy scored his first two collegiate goals, one of which was the eventual game-winner, and collected his first collegiate assist. In a 2-1 loss to Guilford, McEvoy was held scoreless on two shots. Also Nominated: Bralen Clouse, Maryville; Tyler Hilbert, Methodist; Kelan LeBlanc, Huntingdon; Ernesto Platas, Piedmont; Keegan Weekley, Covenant; Jorge Aguilar, William Peace.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Mercedes Bauza, Greensboro - The Mebane, North Carolina junior forward tallied two goals and three assists in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In a 1-0, overtime, victory over Guilford, Bauza assisted on the game-winning goal in the 100th minute. In a 10-3 win over Regent, Bauza scored twice and assisted on two goals. Also Nominated: Capri Clark, Methodist; Alyssa Kral, Maryville; Cydney Nichols, N.C. Wesleyan; Jessica Wallace, Meredith.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Miranda McNalley, Piedmont - The Atlanta, Georgia sophomore goalkeeper posted one shutout as the Lions were 0-1-1 last week. In 200 minutes in net, McNalley stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced. In a scoreless double-overtime tie at 2017 NCAA DIII Tournament Participant Whittier, McNalley made nine saves to preserve the draw. In a 1-0 loss at Redlands, McNalley made six stops. Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Zoe Watts, LaGrange - The Jackson, Georgia freshman forward scored four goals with one assist in a 1-0-1 week for the Panthers. In a 5-0 win over Judson, Watts scored four goals, including the eventual game-winning tally, and added an assist. In a scoreless tie with Millsaps, Watts was held scoreless. Also Nominated: McKaley Boston, Greensboro; Sam Curtis, Huntingdon; Maggie Wilson, Maryville.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Amy Tyna, Huntingdon - The sophomore middle hitter from Cleveland, Ohio averaged 3.43 kills and 2.93 digs per set as the Hawks posted a 2-2 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Rust, Tyna tallied 12 kills, nine digs and five service aces. In a 3-0 loss to Birmingham Southern, Tyna posted a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs with one service ace and one block. In a 3-0 loss to Sewanee, Tyna notched eight kills, eight digs and one block. Finally, in a 3-2 win over Rhodes, Tyna tallied a double-double of 16 kills and ten digs with five blocks and one service ace. Also Nominated: Brooke Aaron, Averett; Madelyn Chappell, Salem; Caroline Corey, Meredith; Sarah Egbers, Greensboro; Brienna Laskowski, William Peace; Alina Roberts, Piedmont; Brittany Ter Meer, Methodist.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Maggie Hawks, Salem - The sophomore libero from Mt. Airy, North Carolina averaged 5.69 digs per set as the Spirits posted a 2-2 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Lynchburg, Hawks totaled 21 digs, two kills, two assists and one service ace. In a 3-1 loss to Eastern Mennonite, Hawks posted 39 digs, six assists and one kill. In a 3-0 win over Bryn Mawr, Hawks contributed eight digs and three assists. Finally, in a 3-2 loss to Bridgewater, Hawks totaled 23 digs, four assists and two kills. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Emily Braxton, William Peace - The freshman defensive specialist from Willow Spring, North Carolina averaged 6.86 assists per set as the Pacers posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 3-2 loss to Guilford, Braxton tallied 25 digs and four assists. In a 3-0 loss to Roanoke, Braxton posted 21 digs and two assists. In a 3-0 loss to Southern Virginia, Braxton notched 29 digs, four assists and two service aces. In a 3-0 win over Randolph, Braxton totaled 21 digs, one assist and one service ace. Also Nominated: Meredith Bonee, Maryville; Avery Bowman, Meredith; Grey Capozzoli, Averett; Erica East, Methodist; Ashley Murphy, Huntingdon; Tatiana Paula, Piedmont; Brooklyn Snow, Salem.

 

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Bryce Griggs, Piedmont - The junior from Guyton, Georgia placed 27th out of 114 runners at the Jacksonville State University Strut Invitational last week. Griggs completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16:51 helping the Lions to an eighth place team finish. Also Nominated: Endashaw Tonja, Methodist; Nate Collins, Covenant.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Nate Collins, Covenant - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama placed first out of 35 runners at the Covenant College Mountaintop Invitational last week. Collins completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:09 helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Jonathan Wertz, Methodist; Bryan Storie, LaGrange; Cole Elrod, Piedmont; Zach Montgomery, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Lilly Smith, Covenant - The senior from Weaverville, North Carolina placed first out of 42 runners at the Covenant College Mountaintop Invitational last week. Smith completed the two-mile course in a course and program-record time of 12:42, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Lindsey Pritchard, Methodist; Mackenzie Devine, Piedmont; Hailey Chandler, Averett; Allie Bucknam, Meredith. 

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
S.K. Lipperd, Covenant - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama placed second out of 42 runners at the Covenant College Mountaintop Invitational last week. Lipperd completed the  two-mile course in a time of 12:55, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Brittni Pettway, Methodist; RoyseAnn Day, Salem; Val Angel, Piedmont; Mitxi Diaz, Meredith; Anna Roman, William Peace.
