USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 10, 2018

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Eric Thomas, Huntingdon - The sophomore running back from Memphis, Tennessee scored three touchdowns in a 41-35 loss to Birmingham Southern. Thomas carried the ball 16 times for 158 yards, good for an average of 9.9 yards per attempt. Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Nate Coffey, Greensboro - The freshman quarterback from Sylva, North Carolina tossed three touchdowns in a 44-28 victory over Gallaudet. Coffey was 14-for-23 with 186 yards and zero interceptions, good for a 171.8 passing efficiency rating. Also Nominated: Jarrod Mosby, Averett.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Jason Gerber, Greensboro
 - The Holly Springs, North Carolina junior defensive lineman recorded six tackles, two for a loss of seven total yards and scored a touchdown after scooping up a fumble in a 44-28 victory over Gallaudet. Gerber's fourth-quarter fumble recovery which he took 49 yards for the score put the game away for the Pride. Also Nominated: Dejon Brooks, Averett; Nate Jones, Methodist; Marcus Leggett, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Josh Jones, Greensboro - The freshman defensive lineman from Fayetteville, North Carolina totaled eight tackles, three for a loss of 21 total yards and one forced fumble in a 44-28 victory over Gallaudet. Jones' forced fumble was recovered by the Pride and eventually led to a Greensboro touchdown. Also Nominated: Joseph Ledbetter, Averett; Julian Cupo, Methodist.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Bradley Jefferson, Averett - The senior defensive back from Tignall, Georgia blocked a first quarter field goal in a 24-14 loss to Randolph-Macon. Jefferson also helped the Cougars with five tackles on defense. Also Nominated: None.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Chris Brown, Pfeiffer - The junior forward from Sneads Ferry, North Carolina tallied three goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Falcons. In a 5-1 win over Frostburg State, Brown netted a hat trick of three goals, one of which was the eventual game-winner, while also adding an assist. In a 3-1 victory over Marymount, Brown was held scoreless. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Austin Bramhall, Averett - The junior goalkeeper from Herndon, Virginia allowed just one goal and made 13 saves in a 2-0 week for the Cougars. In a 2-1 win over Ferrum, Bramhall stopped nine of the ten shots he faced. In a 1-0 victory over Guilford, Bramhall posted the shutout by making four saves. Also Nominated: Nick Bryant, Methodist; Jacob Hill, Pfeiffer; Paul Lemay, Covenant; Nate Long, Maryville; Elmer Martinez, Greensboro; Cameron Verona, Piedmont. 

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Jorge Aguilar, William Peace - The freshman midfielder from Wallace, North Carolina three goals and one assist as the Pacers posted a 1-1-1 record last week. In a 2-2 draw with Hampden-Sydney, Aguilar scored the team's second goal of the match. In a 3-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite, Aguilar was in on all three goals as he two goals and assisted on another. Finally, in a 2-1 loss to Ferrum, Aguilar was held scoreless. WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Bailey Sipos, Maryville - The Knoxville, Tennessee sophomore forward tallied four goals in a 2-0 week for the Scots. In a 2-1 win over Tennessee Wesleyan, Sipos scored the team's first goal of the game. In a 7-1 victory over Muskingum, Sipos notched her third-career hat trick with three goals. Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Kourtney Halliburton, Berea - The Knoxville, Tennessee junior defender helped lead the Mountaineer defense post two shutouts in a 4-0 week. On three different occasions, Halliburton cleared the ball off the goal line to prevent scores. In all, Berea allowed just two goals in 360 minutes played. Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Mackenzie Pruitt, Pfeiffer - The Havelock, North Carolina freshman forward scored two goals with one assist in a 6-0 win over Wesleyan in the Falcons' only contest last week. Pruitt's first goal of the match eventually became the game-winner as she also added the third score of the contest. Also Nominated: Natalie Habich, Greensboro; Allie Kuzel, Piedmont; Grace Marion, William Peace; Ashley Ruelo, Averett; Skye Svehlak, Agnes Scott; Madison Thompson, Meredith; Bailee Vanover, Berea; Maggie Wilson, Maryville.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Caroline Corey, Meredith - The junior outside hitter from Greenville, North Carolina averaged 3.80 kills with a .295 hitting percentage and 2.00 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Roanoke, Corey tallied 13 kills, four digs, four service aces, two blocks and one assist. In a 3-0 win over Brevard, Corey posted a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs to go along with four service aces and one assist. In a 3-0 victory over Emory & Henry, Corey ten kills and two digs. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Megan Andrews, Methodist - The sophomore outside hitter from Henderson, North Carolina averaged 4.63 digs to go along with 1.25 kills per set as the Monarchs posted a 3-2 record last week. In a 3-1 loss to Guilford, Andrews totaled 15 digs, eight kills, two assists and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Randolph, Andrews posted 12 digs, six kills, one assist, one block and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Ferrum, Andrews contributed 19 digs, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-0 loss to Bridgewater, Andrews notched 13 digs, four assists and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Hollins, Andrews had 15 digs, six kills, two service aces and one assist. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Meredith Bonee, Maryville - The freshman setter/right side from Knoxville, Tennessee averaged 5.31 assists, 2.54 digs and 1.85 kills per set as the Scots posted a 2-1 record last week. In a 3-1 loss to Rhodes, Bonee posted a triple-double with 23 assists, 14 digs and 11 kills to go along with one block. In a 3-1 win over Salem, Bonee totaled 21 assists, six kills, six digs, four service aces and one block. Finally, in a 3-2 victory over Lynchburg, Bonee notched a double-double of 25 assists and 13 digs with seven kills, five service aces and one dig. Also Nominated: Avery Bowman, Meredith; Emily Braxton, William Peace; Alonna Clouse, Pfeiffer; Erica East, Methodist; Zamyiah Mangum, Averett; Ashley Murphy, Huntingdon; Tatiana Paula, Piedmont; Lauren Weaver, N.C. Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Logan McKenzie, Berea - The junior from Athens, Tennessee placed first out of 66 runners at the Berea/Centre Jamboree last week. McKenzie completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 15:14 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Daniel Beckett, Maryville; Matthew Tueller, Covenant; Justin Sanford, William Peace; Zach Montgomery, Averett; Sam Hurst, Methodist.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Sair Salgado, Berea - The freshman from Louisville, Kentucky placed third out of 66 runners at the Berea/Centre Jamboree last week. Salgado completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 15:50 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Jonathan Wertz, Methodist; Nate Collins, Covenant; Zach Montgomery, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Lilly Smith, Covenant - The senior from Weaverville, North Carolina placed first out of 22 runners at the Huntingdon College Invitational last week. Smith completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 24:10, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Anna Roman, William Peace; Lindsey Pritchard, Methodist; Alixis Roccia, Averett; Abby Schlenker, Berea. 

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
S.K. Lipperd, Covenant - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama placed second out of 22 runners at the Huntingdon College Invitational last week. Lipperd completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 24:37, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Anna Roman, William Peace; Alixis Roccia, Averett; Brittni Pettway, Methodist; Lets Heigley, Berea.
