USA South Men's Soccer Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for men's soccer.  A total of 41 student-athletes have been named to the USA South All-Conference teams. Christopher Newport University's Winston Mattheisen has been named the Player of the Year while his coach, Steve Shaw, earned Coach of the Year Honors for the second consecutive season. Additionally, Michael Muhseler from N.C. Wesleyan College was named the Conference's Rookie of the Year. Finally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. All awards are voted on by the men's soccer coach at each institution.

Mattheisen, a Norfolk, Virginia sophomore forward, totaled a team-high 25 points on 11 goals and three assists this fall. His point total was good for second in the USA South while his goal amount was tied for second. He earned First Team All-Conference accolades for the second consecutive season. Last fall, Mattheisen also took home Rookie of the Year honors. Finally, he accumulated two USA South Player of the Week honors this season.

Muhseler, a Hanover, Germany freshman forward, led the USA South in points and goals this season. He accumulated 33 points and scored 14 goals. Muhseler also added five assists which was tied for third in the Conference. Additionally, his six goals and 15 points during USA South play led all players. Muhseler earned First Team All-Conference accolades to go along with four USA South Rookie of the Week honors this fall.

Shaw, in his 14th season as the head of the Captains, earned his sixth coach of the year honor. He took his team to their third regular season title in the last four years, the program's sixth all-time crown. The Captains finished the regular season with a 16-2 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in USA South play. At one point this season Christopher Newport was ranked as the number-one team in the nation. Shaw takes his team into the semifinals of the USA South Men's Soccer Tournament as the top-seed.
