USA South Women's Soccer Awards
Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) -
The USA South Athletic
Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for women's soccer. A total of
55 student-athletes have been named to the USA South
All-Conference teams. Meredith College's Alex Calvert has been named the Player of the Year
while her coach, Paul Smith, earned Coach of the Year honors.
Additionally, Amber Womack from Shenandoah University was named Rookie
of the Year. Finally, the USA South
recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team consisting of one member from each
competing school. All awards are
voted on by the women's soccer coach at each institution.
Calvert, a junior midfielder from Wilson, North Carolina adds a player
of the year award to her 2007 Rookie of the Year honor. She controlled
the center of the field and was second in the league in scoring. Calvert
tallied 40 points on 18 goals and four assists. She racked up a
league-high three game-winning goals versus Conference competition this
fall. For her efforts, Calvert was named First Team
All-Conference for the third consecutive season. Calvert . Finally, she was named USA South Player of the Week
four times this season.
Womack, a Perry Hill, Maryland freshman forward led the USA South in
assists with ten this season. She also added 11 goals to total 32
points. Womack's point
total ranked third in the Conference while her goal tally was tied for
the fourth-highest output in the league. She was one of only four
players in the USA South to score more than ten goals this fall. Womack was named First Team All-Conference while also earning USA South
Rookie of the Week honors twice this fall.
Smith, in his ninth year as the head of the Avenging Angels, has led his
team to a 15-3-1 overall regular season record with an 8-1 mark in
league play. Meredith earned the program's first-ever regular season
title this fall. The Avenging Angels are the USA South Tournament's
top-seed and defending champions.
