Ferrum, Maryville, Piedmont Tabbed as Preseason USA South Women's Basketball Top Picks

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) – The USA South Athletic Conference's women's basketball coaches have released their 2017-18 preseason polls. Each divisional preseason poll only includes votes from coaches within that particular division-only. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting. This is the first season that the Conference will once again split into divisions in the sport of women's basketball as the Conference welcomes new League members Berea College, Brevard College and Pfeiffer University. Brevard and Pfeiffer will not be included in the polls as they are each reclassifying from Division II and are not eligible championship honors this season.

Atop the USA South East Division poll was Ferrum College, led by 13-year head coach Bryan Harvey. The Panthers are the defending East Division champions, capturing a regular season League title for the fourth time in the past six years. Ferrum finished last season with an 18-9 overall record with a 12-2 mark in Conference play. The Panthers fell in the semifinals of the USA South tournament to eventual champion Piedmont. Ferrum received 60 total points in the preseason poll and grabbed five first place votes. Placing second in the poll with 58 points and the remaining four first place votes was Averett University. In third with 51 points was Greensboro College while N.C. Wesleyan College ranked fourth with 40 points with William Peace collecting 33 points for fifth. Rounding out the poll were Methodist University (28 points), Salem College (25 points), Meredith College (21 points) and Mary Baldwin University (eight points).

Placing tied for first in the USA South West Division poll was defending USA South West Division Champions, Maryville College, led by eight-year head coach Darrin Travillian and defending USA South Tournament Champions, Piedmont College, led by 13-year head coach Jamie Purdy. The Scots captured their fifth consecutive regular season crown while the tournament title was the first for the Lions since joining the USA South. Maryville and Piedmont each received 46 total points and four first place votes. Placing third in the poll with 33 points was LaGrange College while Huntingdon College was close behind in fourth with 31 points and Berea totaled 29 points to rank fifth. Rounding out the poll were Covenant College (19 points), Agnes Scott College (12 points) and Wesleyan College (eight points).

The women's basketball regular season gets underway on Wednesday, November 15th as nine teams take on non-League opposition.

The 2018 USA South Women's Basketball Tournament will once again be conducted exclusively on campus sites. The top-six seeded teams from each division will advance to the tournament.
