USA South 2016 Volleyball Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2016 All-Conference awards for volleyball. A total of 44 student-athletes have earned honors. Averett University's Hannah Shields was named the Player of the Year while her coach Danny Miller earned Coach of the Year honors. Meredith College's Caroline Corey collected Rookie of the Year accolades while Piedmont College's Haley Hixon was named Libero of the Year. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team consisting of one member from each competing school.

All awards are voted on by the volleyball coach at each institution. The divisional team voting is completed only by those coaches in the particular division. The all-conference and individual award voting is completed by all coaches.

Shields, a Keeling, Virginia junior outside hitter, has now been named Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. These honors are added to her Rookie of the Year accolade in 2014. Shields becomes the first player in USA South Volleyball history to earn Rookie of the Year followed by two consecutive Player of the Year honors. She is currently the top offensive performer in the Conference this season, leading the League in kills (627), kills per set (5.02), points (698) and points per set (5.6). Additionally, Shields is ranked in the top-ten in hitting percentage and service aces while adding 3.06 digs per set. She collects her third consecutive First Team All-Conference honor this fall and was also named First Team East Division. Finally, Shields was named USA South Player of the Week four times during the season.

Corey, a freshman outside hitter from Greenville, North Carolina, is a critical newcomer to the Avenging Angel lineup. She currently leads all USA South rookies in kills per set (3.44), points per set (3.7) and hitting percentage (.298). Each of those statistics also rank in the top-five of all League players. Corey has also averaged 1.24 digs per set with 37 total blocks. For her efforts this season, Corey received First Team All-Conference and First Team East Division honors while being named USA South Rookie of the Week three times.

Hixon, a sophomore libero from Ringgold, Georgia, currently has 544 digs which is an average of 5.33 per set. In USA South-only matches, Hixon led the Conference in digs with 284 which translated into a 5.36 digs per set average. Additionally, Hixon has compiled 54 service aces which ranks fifth in the League. She collects her first all-conference honor as she was named First Team West Division. Finally, Hixon was named USA South Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.

Miller, in his 22nd season leading the Cougars, becomes the most decorated coach in USA South Volleyball history as he claims his eighth-career Coach of the Year honor. The Cougars captured the USA South's East Division Championship after posting a perfect 15-0 mark in Conference action. The regular season title is the Averett program's second consecutive and League-best 16th all-time. With a 25-9 overall record, the Cougars are ranked seventh in the latest NCAA South Regional Rankings. Miller now leads Averett into the USA South Tournament semifinals as the East's top seed and host.
