USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 10, 2011

Players of the Week

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
          Derek Mitchell, Ferrum - The senior from Newport News, Virginia averaged a double-double of 19.0 points and 12.3 rebounds per game to go along with 1.0 steals per game as the Panthers compiled a 2-1 record last week. Mitchell notched double-doubles in each of his three contests last week. In an 85-79 loss to tenth-ranked Eastern Mennonite, Mitchell totaled 19 points, 14 rebounds and one block. In a 95-68 win over USA South rival Averett, Mitchell contributed 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Finally, in a 79-56 victory over USA South foe Methodist, Mitchell scored 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked one shot. Women's Basketball Player of the Week
           Danielle Duncan, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina junior forward/center averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game as The Pride compiled a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In an 85-56 victory over Meredith, Duncan scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and collected one steal. In a 70-49 victory over Averett, Duncan totaled 20 points, six rebounds and one block. Also Nominated: Chelsie Schweers, Christopher Newport; Megan Rahn, Meredith; Tesla Akers, Ferrum.

 

Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
           Tra Benefield, Christopher Newport - The Richmond, Virginia freshman guard/forward tallied a double-double to lead the Captains to an 82-75 win over USA South rival Shenandoah in the team's only action last week. Benefield scored 17 points, grabbed a team-high ten rebounds, blocked a team-high two shots and dished out one assist.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
          Chevena Pickard, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game as The Pride compiled a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In an 85-56 victory over Meredith, Pickard scored 20 points, grabbed five rebounds and collected one steal. In a 70-49 victory over Averett, Pickard totaled 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Also Nominated: Tia Perry, Christopher Newport; Shea Smith, Ferrum.
