USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 4, 2010


Football Offensive Player of the Week
          James Wilson, Averett - The senior running back from Los Angeles, California rushed for 155 yards with four touchdowns in a 50-0 win over USA South foe Greensboro. Wilson averaged 7.0 yards per carry and his touchdown total was the second-most in a single game in school history. Also Nominated: Travis Murphy, Methodist; Darrell Tate, Maryville; Matt Long, Christopher Newport.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
          Quinton Tate, Methodist - The Palmetto, Florida sophomore defensive back intercepted two passes in a 17-14 win over USA South rival Maryville. Tate also added four solo tackles and one pass breakup in the victory. Tate's second interception of the game came with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and helped seal the Monarch victory. Football Special Teams Player of the Week
          Matthew Phifer, MethodistThe Charlotte, North Carolina freshman kick returner accumulated 121 return yards in a 17-14 win over USA South rival Maryville. Phifer average of 30 yards per punt return and 15 yards per kickoff return. Phifer helped set-up both Monarch touchdowns with punt returns of 42 and 48 yards. Also Nominated: Mario Huffman, Averett.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
           Winston Mattheisen, Christopher Newport - The junior forward from Norfolk, Virginia helped the Captains to a 2-0 record last week by scoring two game-winning goals. In a 2-1 win over Southwestern, Mattheisen tallied a goal in the 69th minute, capping a CNU comeback. In a 1-0 win over sixth-ranked Trinity (Texas), Mattheisen scored the game's only goal when he put the ball in the back of the net in the 58th minute. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Justin Wolfe, Christopher Newport - The junior goalkeeper allowed just one goal in 180 minutes between the posts in a 2-0 week for the Captains. In a 2-1 win over Southwestern, Wolfe made two saves and allowed one score. Finally, in a 1-0 win over sixth-ranked Trinity (Texas), Wolfe went the distance and posted a shutout by stopping five shots.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Jessie Dennis, Shenandoah - The Eldersburg, Maryland junior forward scored two goals last week as the Hornets posted a 2-1 record. In a 2-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite, Dennis was held coreless but did manage two shots on goal. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe Meredith, Dennis scored the team's second goal of the game in the 70th minute. Finally, in a 9-0 win over USA South rival Peace, Dennis tallied the first goal of the second half in the 51st minute. Also Nominated: Alex Calvert, Meredith; Sarah McFarland, Mary Baldwin.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Meghan Gumbs, Christopher Newport - The Mastic, New York sophomore goalkeeper posted two shutouts in a 2-0 week for the Captains. In a 2-0 win over Salisbury, Gumbs stopped ten shots to keep the opponent off the scoreboard. In a 5-0 victory over St. Mary's (MD), Gumbs made three saves en route to the shutout. Also Nominated: Kat Terza, Shenandoah; Samantha Lupo, Averett.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Jessie Heavenrich, Christopher Newport - The junior setter from Cambria, California averaged 11.4 assists, 3.2 digs, 0.8 aces and 0.7 kills per set last week as the Captains posted a 4-0 record all versus USA South competition. In two 3-0 wins over Shenandoah, Heavenrich appeared in four sets and accumulated 30 assists, 18 digs, five service aces, three blocks and two kills. In a 3-0 victory over Methodist, Heavenrich totaled 37 assists, eight digs, four kills and two service aces. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Heavenrich contributed 37 assists, six digs, two blocks, one kill and one service ace. Also Nominated: Brittany Hunsucker, Greensboro; Cori Spade, Meredith; Jesse Jones, Averett; Meredith Smith, N.C. Wesleyan; Stephanie Wood, Methodist.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Kelly George, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior libero from Derwood, Maryland averaged 6.9 digs and 0.5 assists per set last week as the Bishops posted a 4-0 record. In a 3-1 win at USA South foe Methodist, George recorded 34 digs and two service aces. In a 3-0 win over Guilford, George totaled 27 digs en route to breaking the school record for digs in a career. She also added one service ace in the win. In a 3-0 victory over USA South rival Shenandoah, George contributed 11 digs and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-1 win over USA South foe Peace, George tallied 24 digs, four assists and two service aces. Also Nominated: Hillary McPhatter, Methodist; Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport; Candace Pettway, Mary Baldwin; MaryBeth Finegan, Meredith; Paige Aaron, Averett.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Josiah Renton, Shenandoah - The junior from Manassas, Virginia helped the Hornets at the Salisbury Cathcart Invitational last week by finishing tenth out of 183 runners in the 8K event. Renton finished the race in a time of 25:47 to help the Hornets to a fifth place finish. Also Nominated: Corey Lofton, Christopher Newport.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Amy Smith, Shenandoah - The junior from Bassett, Virginia led the Hornets at the Salisbury Cathcart Invitational last week by finishing third out of 175 runners in the 5.9K event. Smith finished the race in a time of 22:22 to help the Hornets to a fifth place finish. Also Nominated: Kristyn Zeiler, Methodist; Dira Hansen, Christopher Newport; Morgan Youd, Meredith.

Golfer of the Week
          Chris Olson, Christopher Newport - The senior from Midlothian, Virginia placed 11th at the Ted Keller Memorial in Glen Allen, Virginia last week by shooting a five-over par 149. In the two-day event, Olson opened with a four-over par 76 then finished with a one-par 73. His performance led the Captains to a third place finish at the event.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Jordan Vann, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman quarterback from Fayetteville, North Carolina accounted for 270 total yards and one touchdown in a 24-14 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Vann was 15-of-28 passing with 202 yards and one interception. On the ground, Vann carried the ball 13 times for 68 yards, an average of 5.2 yards-per-rush, with one touchdown. In addition to his duties on offense, he also punted the ball once for 42 yards. Also Nominated: Clayton Navarre, Averett; Kentel Noel, Christopher Newport.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Tazmon Foster, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman defensive back from Henderson, North Carolina led the Bishops with 11 total tackles in a 24-14 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Foster contributed seven solo tackles and four assisted take downs. Two of his tackles resulted in a loss of seven total yards. Also Nominated: Skyler Richardson, Averett; Josh Rogers, Shenandoah; Navahri Holden, Methodist.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Pernilla Milton, Averett - The Goteborg, Sweden freshman forward scored two goals in a 2-0 week for the Cougars versus USA South competition. In a 2-0 win over Methodist, Milton put the game away with an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. In a 2-1 victory over Greensboro, Milton gave the Cougars an early lead with a goal in the 17th minute. Also Nominated: Emma O'Reilly, Christopher Newport; Hannah Oakes, Shenandoah; Sarah Lang, Greensboro.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
          Dana Sandknop, Greensboro - The freshman setter from Greensboro, North Carolina averaged 10.9 assists, 1.8 digs and 1.1 service aces per set last week as The Pride posted a 2-1 record all versus USA South competition. In a 3-2 win over Averett, Sandknop broke the school record for assists in a match with 68. She also added five digs, three service aces and one block in the victory. In a 3-0 loss to Christopher Newport, Sandknop recorded a double-double of 22 assists and 12 digs. She also added one kill and one service ace in the defeat. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Ferrum, Sandknop tallied 19 assists, seven service aces one kill and one dig in two sets played. Also Nominated: Leanne Burton, Meredith; Sarah Sparks, Averett; Tiffany Flesher, Mary Baldwin.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Ryan Taylor, Shenandoah - The freshman from Westminster, Maryland led the Hornets to a fifth place finish at the Salisbury Cathcart Invitational last week. Taylor placed eighth out of 183 runners with a time of 25:44 on the 8K course. Also Nominated: Patrick Cunningham, Christopher Newport; Marcelo Prata, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Erin Rolaf, Christopher Newport - The freshman from Woodbridge, Virginia helped the Captains to a fourth place finish at the Salisbury Cathcart Invitational last week. Rolaf placed 21st out of 175 runners with a time of 23:03 on the 5.9K course. Also Nominated: Abby Fuquay, Meredith.
