USA South Athletes of the Week - Feb. 28, 2011


Players of the Week

Baseball Player of the Week
          Greg Van Sickler, Shenandoah - The senior second baseman/pitcher from Stephenson, Virginia hit .455 (5-for-11) with two home runs in a two-game sweep of USA South foe Ferrum in the team's only action last week. Van Sickler also added four RBI, three runs scored and one stolen base in the wins. Finally, Van Sickler collected a victory on the mound in the Hornet's 9-5 win in the first game between the two Conference opponents. Van Sickler earned the victory by tossing six innings and allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Ryan Summerford, Greensboro; Tripp Lancaster, Methodist; Paul Jaglowski, Ferrum; Shannon Mark, Christopher Newport; Kyle Newcomb, Averett.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
           Tyler Long, Averett - The Durham, North Carolina sophomore earned the win in a 7-3 victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan in his only appearance last week. Long tossed nine-complete innings allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits with five walks and eight strikeouts. Also Nominated: Rusty White, Methodist; Sean Chitsaz, Christopher Newport.

Softball Player of the Week
           Ashley Plaugher, Shenandoah - The senior third baseman from Winchester, Virginia hit .538 (7-for-13) with seven RBI, one run scored, two doubles and two walks last week as the Hornets posted a 4-0 record. In a doubleheader sweep of Catholic, Plaugher was a combined 2-for-6 with four RBI and one walk. In a doubleheader sweep of Randolph, Plaugher was a combined 5-for-8 with three RBI, one run scored, two doubles and one walk. Also Nominated: Brittany Parsons, Greensboro; Jen Falin, Christopher Newport; Jordan Adams, Methodist.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
           Brooke Over, Shenandoah - The Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania junior earned two wins last week for the Hornets. In victories over Catholic and Randolph, Over tossed a combined 14 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with seven walks and 18 strikeouts. Also Nominated: Elizabeth Holte, Christopher Newport.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
           Meghan Harkey, Christopher Newport - The Purcellville, Virginia senior attacker tallied nine points on four goals and five assists in the Captain's 18-17 season-opening win over Adrian last week. Harkey also caused one turnover in the victory. Also Nominated: Jasmine Stephens, Methodist; Brooke Hewartson, Ferrum; Melissa Gallaher, Greensboro.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
           Monica Evans, Christopher Newport - The Springfield, Virginia sophomore defender tallied a team-high five groundballs in the Captain's 18-17 season-opening win over Adrian last week. Evans also caused two turnovers and grabbed two draw controls in the victory. Also Nominated: Paola Aguilar, Shenandoah.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
          Rob Clayton, Methodist - The sophomore from Avon Lake, Ohio posted a 3-0 record at the number-five singles flight and a 2-1 mark at the number-two doubles position last week for the Monarchs. Clayton posted singles wins over opponents from Barton, Benedict and Guilford. In doubles action, Clayton teamed with Austin Wang to earn victories over opponents from Benedict and Guilford.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
          Katherine Meindl, Methodist - The sophomore from Butler, Pennsylvania has posted a 4-1 record at the number-two singles flight and a 4-0 mark at the number-one doubles position so far this spring for the Monarchs. Meindl has posted singles wins over opponents from Oglethorpe, Covenant, Agnes Scott and Guilford. In doubles action, Meindl has teamed with Kaitlin Flaherty to earn the four victories. Also Nominated: Marion Gloor, Christopher Newport.


Rookies of the Week

Baseball Rookie of the Week
          Chris Perry, Methodist - The freshman designated hitter from Cary, North Carolina hit .500 (3-for-6) with two RBI, one run scored, one double and one walk in a two-game sweep of LaGrange last week for the Monarchs. Methodist also defeated Hampden-Sydney but Perry did not play.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
          Andrew Womble, Methodist - The Elizabeth City, North Carolina freshman earned two wins last week for the Monarchs. In his first appearance, a 7-4 Methodist win over Hampden-Sydney, Womble tossed four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. He closed out the week by pitching 6.2 innings and allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in an 8-3 victory over LaGrange.

Softball Rookie of the Week
          Heather Sink, Shenandoah - The freshman shortstop from Chesterfield, Virginia hit .385 (5-for-13) with six runs scored, three walks, two stolen bases and one double last week as the Hornets posted a 4-0 record. In a doubleheader sweep of Catholic, Sink was a combined 1-for-6 with two runs scored, two walks and one stolen base. In a doubleheader sweep of Randolph, Sink was a combined 4-for-7 with four runs scored, one double, one walk and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Emily Cooke, Meredith; Sarah Chapman, Methodist.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
          Kelsey Sanfilippo, Greensboro - The New Bern, North Carolina freshman earned one win in two appearances last week for The Pride. For the week, she totaled eight innings pitched and allowed six runs, three of which were earned, on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. In a 2-1 win over Birmingham Southern, Sanfilipo earned the victory by pitching four innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit with no walks and five strikeouts.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
          Samantha Sisson, Shenandoah - The Keuka Park, New York freshman midfielder tallied eight points on a game-high seven goals and one assist in the Hornet's 16-15, double-overtime, season-opening loss to Division-II Shepherd last week. Sisson also collected nine groundballs, grabbed six draw controls and caused four turnovers in the defeat. Also Nominated: Courtney Hamm, Ferrum; Hannah Wilkerson, Christopher Newport; Micaela Sandoval, Greensboro.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
          Duncan Miller, Methodist - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama posted a 3-0 record at the number-two singles flight and a 2-1 record at the number-one doubles spot last week for the Monarchs. Miller posted singles wins over opponents from Barton, Benedict and Guilford. Miller teamed with Matthew Taylor to earn the two doubles victories.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
          Laura Baker, Methodist - The freshman from Lincolnton, North Carolina has posted a 3-2 record at the number-three/four singles flights and a 3-1 mark at the number-two/three doubles positions so far this spring for the Monarchs. Baker has posted singles wins over opponents from Covenant, Agnes Scott and Guilford. In doubles action, Baker has teamed with Stacey Brooks to earn the three victories.
