USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 19, 2011

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Rico Wallace, Shenandoah - The senior wide receiver from Hanover, Maryland scored two touchdowns in a 36-29 loss to Randolph-Macon. Wallace had five receptions for 145 yards in the defeat. His touchdowns came on catches of 53 and 27 yards. Also Nominated: Tim Conner, Maryville; Wynton Stephens, Averett; Markeese Stovall, Christopher Newport.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
          Byron Mitchell, Shenandoah - The Virginia Beach, Virginia sophomore safety collected a game-high 12 solo tackles in a 36-29 loss to Randolph-Macon. Mitchell also added one assisted take down for 13 total tackles in the defeat. In addition to his tackles, Mitchell also intercepted a pass and handled the kickoff return duties. Also Nominated: Jamie Owen, Maryville; Travis Welch, Greensboro; Albert Brown, Averett; Tyler Portell, Christopher Newport.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
          Brad Scott, Averett - The Rocky Mount, North Carolina junior kicker and punter was steady in a 35-21 win over Guilford. Scott was a perfect 5-for-5 kicking extra points and averaged 39.8 yards-per-punt on five attempts. He also handled the kickoff duties and amassed two touchbacks. Also Nominated: R.J. Sandmeyer, Maryville.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
          Owen White, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior forward from Stockton, England helped the Bishops to a 1-0-1 record last week by scoring three goals with one assist for seven points. In a 2-0 win over Lynchburg, White scored the eventual game-winner and assisted on the team's second goal of the contest. In a 3-3 tie versus 13th-ranked North Park, White tallied two goals including one that put the Bishops ahead in the second half. Also Nominated: Richard Bjornander, Averett; Clayton Newton, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Justin Wolfe, Christopher Newport - The senior goalkeeper from Williamsburg, Virginia was 1-0-1, with one shutout, last week for the top-ranked Captains. Wolfe played all 200 minutes and allowed just one goal. In a 1-1 tie versus Oneonta State, Wolfe stopped three shots to preserve the result. In a 4-0 win over Vassar, Wolfe earned the shutout by making four saves. Also Nominated: Kyle Beach, Methodist; Nate Barker, Averett.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          LaQuinta Garrett, Ferrum - The Herndon, Virginia senior forward scored two goals and added one assist in a 2-0 week for the Panthers. In a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Emory & Henry, Garrett scored the first goal of the match and assisted on the game-winner in the 63rd minute. In a 4-0 victory over Trinity (DC), Garrett notched the game's second goal in the 47th minute. Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Kelsey Hopper, Meredith - The Wilmington, North Carolina sophomore goalkeeper earned one shutout last week as the Avenging Angels posted a 1-0-2 record. In 273 minutes, Hopper allowed one goal and collected 12 saves. In a scoreless tie versus Roanoke, Hopper earned a shutout by making eight saves. In a 1-1 tie versus Piedmont, Hopper collected four saves. Finally, in a 6-0 victory over Wesleyan (GA), Hopper saw just 27 minutes of action and did not need to make a save during her time in net. Volleyball Player of the Week
         Bailey Jensen, Christopher Newport - The junior middle blocker from Ashburn, Virginia compiled a .593 hitting percentage while averaging 3.4 kills and 1.2 blocks per set last week as the Captains posted a 2-0 record versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Peace, Jensen totaled ten kills, three blocks and one assist. In a 3-0 victory over Meredith, Jensen saw action in two sets and contributed seven kills, three blocks and one dig. Also Nominated: Stephanie Wood, Methodist; Meredith Smith, N.C. Wesleyan; Allison Sparks, Averett; Cori Spade, Meredith.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Paige Aaron, Averett - The junior libero from Danville, Virginia averaged 5.00 digs per set last week as the Cougars posted a 5-0 record last week, all versus USA South competition. In a 3-1 win over Peace, Aaron recorded 26 digs, four assists and four service aces. In a 3-0 win over Methodist, Aaron totaled seven digs, four service aces and one assist. In a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah, Aaron collected 15 digs, five service aces, one kill and one assist. In a 3-1 win over Meredith, Aaron notched 22 digs, two service aces, one kill and one assist. Finally, in a 3-1 victory over Mary Baldwin, Aaron totaled 23 digs, one kill, one assist and one service ace. Also Nominated: Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport, Candace Pettway, Mary Baldwin; Emily Anderson, Meredith; Rachel Evans, Methodist; Shana Ayers, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Ke'Von White, Averett - The freshman running back from Midlothian, Virginia scored his first two collegiate touchdowns in a 35-21 victory over Guilford. White carried the ball 19 times for 83 yards and the two scores. He averaged 4.4 yards-per-carry in the win.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Casey Kessler, Averett - The freshman linebacker from Ormond Beach, Florida totaled four tackles in a 35-21 win over Guilford. Kessler contributed three solo tackles and one assisted take down. He also forced one fumble and broke up one pass in the victory.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Kevin Vigebo, Averett - The freshman midfielder/forward from Kristiansand, Norway notched two goals, one of which was the game-winner, and added one assist in a 5-3 victory over Piedmont last week. In Averett's other two contests last week, a 6-0 win over Virginia Intermont and a 1-0 loss to 24th-ranked Maryville, Vigebo was held scoreless. Also Nominated: Eirik Nordseth, Methodist; Colby Johnson, Greensboro.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Allie Kahler, Meredith - The Winston Salem, North Carolina freshman midfielder scored the team's lone goal of a 1-1 tie versus Piedmont last week.  In Meredith's other two contests last week, a scoreless tie versus Roanoke and a 6-0 win over Wesleyan (GA), Kahler was held scoreless. 

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
         Jessie Kolden, Christopher Newport - The freshman right side hitter from Alexandria, Virginia averaged 2.7 and 1.7 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 2-0 record against USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Peace, Kolden totaled six kills, five digs and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Meredith, Kolden contributed ten kills, five digs and one block. Also Nominated: Lauren Wright, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
           Lynn Welch, Averett - The freshman from Madison, Virginia placed first out of 13 runners last week in a dual meet with Greensboro. Welch completed the 4K course in a time of 16:02.
