USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 26, 2011

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
          Brian Lybert, Christopher Newport - The senior midfielder from Honolulu, Hawaii helped the second-ranked Captains to a 3-0 win over 18th-ranked Salisbury in the team's only action last week. Lybert scored two goals and added an assist in the win. He scored the first and eventual game-winning goal in the ninth minute to get CNU off on the right foot. He tallied another score in the 56th minute and assisted on the contests' final score in the 83rd minute. Also Nominated: Mark-Antony Liljeklev, Averett; Vinnie De La Cueva, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Justin Wolfe, Christopher Newport - The senior goalkeeper from Williamsburg, Virginia earned a shutout in a 3-0 win over 18th-ranked Salisbury in the team's only action last week. Wolfe stopped all seven shots he faced en route to the victory. Also Nominated: Justin Duksis, Averett; Alberto Faisca, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Lisa Paschal, Methodist - The Sanford, North Carolina sophomore forward scored four goals for eight points as the Monarchs posted a 1-0-1 record versus USA South competition. In a 2-2 tie versus Meredith, Paschal scored the game's first goal in the 23rd minute. In a 10-0 victory over Peace, Paschal tallied a hat-trick by scoring three consecutive goals in the 27th, 29th, and 43rd minutes, respectfully. Also Nominated: Christine Lipovsky, Shenandoah; Eliza Evans, Meredith; Meredith Kelly, Greensboro; Annika Rindestedt, Averett; Dani Gunderson, Christopher Newport.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Samantha Lupo, Averett - The Huntington Station, New York senior goalkeeper earned two shutouts last week as the Cougars posted a 3-0 record. In 204 minutes, Lupo did not allow a goal and collected 13 saves. In a 5-0 win over Southern Virginia, Lupo played the first 23 minutes and made four saves. In a 6-0 victory over Salem, Lupo went the distance and stopped eight shots to earn the shutout. Finally, in a 2-0 win over Guilford, Lupo made one save to earn her second shutout in as many games. Also Nominated: T'Keyah Henry, Greensboro; Caitlyn Deaton, Ferrum.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Cori Spade, Meredith - The junior outside hitter from Raleigh, North Carolina averaged 5.4 kills, 2.0 digs and 0.7 blocks per set last week as the Avenging Angels posted a 2-1 record versus USA South competition. In a 3-1 loss to Methodist, Spade totaled 17 kills, six digs, three blocks and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over Shenandoah, Spade contributed 30 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Greensboro, Spade recorded 12 kills, nine digs, three blocks and two service aces. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Shana Ayers, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior libero from Frankfurt, Kentucky averaged 5.79 digs per set last week as the Bishops posted a 3-1 record. In a 3-0 loss to USA South foe Christopher Newport, Ayers recorded 21 digs, two assists, one kill and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Guilford, Ayers totaled 17 digs, one kill and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over USA South rival Ferrum, Ayers contributed 11 digs, four service aces and two kills. Finally, in a 3-0 win over USA South foe Averett, Ayers 32 digs, two assists and one service ace. Also Nominated: Molly Markley, Meredith; Paige Aaron, Averett; Rachel Evans, Methodist; Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Corey Lofton, Christopher Newport - The senior from Vienna, Virginia placed 13th out of 166 runners last week at the Dickinson Short Invitational. Lofton completed the 4K course in a time of 12:56, helping the Captains to a tenth place team finish. Also Nominated: Josiah Renton, Shenandoah; Joe Adkins, Averett.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Sophia Stone, Mary Baldwin - The sophomore from Pacific Palisades, California placed first out of 58 runners at the Roanoke College Invitational last week. Stone completed the 5K course in a school record time of 19:43, helping the Fighting Squirrels to a fourth place team finish. Also Nominated: Erin Rolaf, Christopher Newport; Morgan Youd, Meredith; Amy Smith, Shenandoah.

Rookies of the Week

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Eirik Nordseth, Methodist - The freshman forward from Steinkjer, Norway helped the Monarchs to a 3-0 win over Chowan in the team's only action last week. Nordseth scored the finals two goals of the contest, in the 20th and 40th minute, respectfully.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Rebecca Staylor, N.C. Wesleyan - The Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman forward scored four goals in a 1-1 week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In a 5-2 loss to Shenandoah, Staylor scored the team's first goal of the game in the 62nd minute. In a 6-1 win over Mary Baldwin, Staylor tallied a hat-trick of three goals including the first of the contest in the ninth minute. Also Nominated: Amber Lynch, Ferrum; Mathilda Hansson, Averett; Erin Cass, Greensboro; Rylie Osborn, Methodist.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
         Jessie Kolden, Christopher Newport - The freshman right side hitter from Alexandria, Virginia posted a .471 hitting percentage while averaging 3.6 kills, 1.8 digs and 0.9 service aces per set last week as the Captains posted a 5-0 record versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Kolden totaled 14 kills, nine digs and three service aces. In a 3-0 victory over Methodist, Kolden contributed nine kills and three digs. In a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Kolden tallied six kills, four service aces, three digs and one block. In a 3-0 victory over Ferrum, Kolden totaled four digs, four service aces and three kills in one set of play. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Averett, Kolden contributed a career-high 15 kills with four digs and two blocks. Also Nominated: Samantha Schambach, Shenandoah; Mackenzie Averett, Averett.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
           Sam Martin, Christopher Newport - The freshman from Rockville, Maryland placed 50th out of 166 runners last week at the Dickinson Short Invitational. Martin completed the 4K course in a time of 13:41, helping the Captains to a tenth place team finish. Also Nominated: Lynn Welch, Averett.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Dorothy Earner, Shenandoah - The freshman from McLean, Virginia placed 24th out of 167 runners last week at the Dickinson Short Invitational. Earner finished the 4K course in a time of 16:37, helping the Hornets to a sixth place team finish. Also Nominated: Ilona Kilpi, Averett; Tirzah Hansen, Peace; Melissa Balbach, Meredith; Julie Machamer, Christopher Newport.
