Basketball Player of the Week
Brandon Givens, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior forward from Ruffin, South Carolina did all he could in an 86-72 loss to USA South foe Maryville last week in the team's only contest. Givens tallied a double-double with game-highs of 33 points and 14 rebounds. He also added two assists, a team-high two blocks and one steal in the defeat. Jacole Hairston, Ferrum - The Martinsville, Virginia sophomore guard led the Panthers to a 2-0 record last week by averaging 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. In an 80-50 win over Roanoke, Hairston tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal. In an 87-46 win over USA South foe Meredith, Hairston scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out one assist and collected one steal. Jaumonee Byrd, Maryville - The Douglasville, Georgia freshman forward helped the Scots to a 2-0 record last week by averaging 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per contest. In an 83-75 win over Berry, Byrd totaled 13 points, two assists and one rebound. In an 86-72 victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Byrd contributed a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Mackenzie Puckett, Maryville - The Franklin, Tennessee freshman guard helped the Scots to a 2-0 record last week by averaging 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest. In an 86-67 win over Covenant, Puckett tallied 20 points, two rebounds, two steals and two blocks. In a 64-46 victory over 18th-ranked Emory, Puckett scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds, blocked two shots, dished out one assist and collected one steal.
