USA South Athletes of the Week - March 4, 2013

Baseball Player of the Week
Travis Younger, Christopher Newport - The freshman second baseman from Chatham, Virginia went 6-for-12 (.500) with eight RBI, two runs scored, one double and two walks as the Captains posted a 6-0 record last week. In doubleheader sweep of USA South foe, Greensboro, Younger only appeared in game-two, a 7-3 win, and was 1-for-2 with one run scored, one run batted in and two walks. Younger did not play in In an 8-2 victory over St. Mary's (MD), Younger recorded a hit in his only at bat of the game. Finally, in a three-game sweep of USA South rival Methodist, Younger was a combined 4-for-9 (.444) with seven RBI, one run scored and one double. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Doug Scherer, LaGrange - The Cumming, Georgia senior earned a victory in his only appearance on the mound last week. In a 4-1 win over USA South foe Greensboro, Scherer tossed seven shutout innings and allowed nine hits with no walks with five strikeouts. Softball Player of the Week
Danielle Newbern, LaGrange - The sophomore catcher/infielder from Gainesville, Georgia went 9-for-15 (.600) with 12 runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, one walk and four stolen bases as the Panthers posted a 4-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Wesleyan (Ga.), Newbern was a combined 4-for-7 with six runs scored, five RBI, one home run, one walk and two stolen bases. In a doubleheader sweep of Salem, Newbern was a combined 5-for-8 with six runs scored, five RBI, two doubles, one home run and two stolen bases. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Brittney Head, Piedmont - The Cumming, Georgia junior earned a 2-0 record last week in two appearances for the Lions. Head totaled 14 innings pitched and allowed just one earned run on 12 hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts. In a 3-1 win over Covenant, Head tossed seven complete innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. In a 7-4 victory over USA South rival Maryville, Head pitched seven complete innings and allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Lacrosse Player of the Week
Sydney Hewartson, Ferrum - The Leesburg, Virginia sophomore attack tallied 22 points on ten goals and 12 assists as the Panthers posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 23-5 victory over Reinhardt, Hewartson scored six goals with four assists and one caused turnover. In a 12-7 win over Berry, Hewartson did not tally a goal but did dish out four assists. Finally, in an 18-5 victory over USA South foe Meredith, Hewartson totaled four goals, four assists and one groundball. Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Carly Haraka, Piedmont - The Cumming, Georgia freshman goalkeeper tallied 180 minutes in goal with 21 saves, two groundballs and three wins in a 3-0 week for the Lions. In an 18-4 win over Oglethorpe, Haraka stopped six shots. In a 17-1 victory over Huntingdon, Haraka collected six saves and one groundball. Finally, in a 14-3 win over Aurora, Haraka made nine saves and grabbed one groundball. Also Nominated: Hanna Slough, Christopher Newport.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Robert Kjellberg, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Vetlanda, Sweden collected a win at both number one singles and doubles over opponents from USA South foe Christopher Newport in his only action last week. He did not drop a single game in his singles win and collected the doubles victory with partner Artsiom Prostak. Also Nominated: Dillon Sullivan, Methodist.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Rachel Purser, Methodist - The senior from Matthews, North Carolina was 2-0 at number-five singles and 1-0 at number-three doubles last week. In singles play, Purser collected wins over opponents from Virginia Wesleyan and Salisbury. In doubles, Purser teamed with Emily Talley to defeat a team from Salisbury. Also Nominated: None.

Brandon Taylor, Christopher Newport - The Richmond, Virginia freshman earned a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. Taylor totaled 14 innings pitched and allowed two earned runs on nine hits with two walks and 17 strikeouts. In an 8-2 win over Greensboro, Taylor tossed seven innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and ten strikeouts. In a 7-4 victory over Methodist, Taylor pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Softball Rookie of the Week
Olivia Duncan, Piedmont - The freshman infielder from Comer, Georgia went 8-for-13 (.615) with four runs scored, three RBI, one double, two walks and two stolen bases as the Lions posted a 4-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Covenant, Duncan was a combined 3-for-6 with one run scored, one run batted in and one walk. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South rival Maryville, Duncan was a combined 5-for-7 with three runs scored, two RBI, one double, one walk and two stolen bases. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Hanah Marshall, Christopher Newport - The Powhatan, Virginia freshman tossed a complete game shutout in her only appearances last week for the Captains. In a 5-0 win over Old Westbury, Marshall went the distance, allowing just two hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Also Nominated: April Costa, Averett; Jordan Ellingson, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Cahner Manns, Piedmont - The Matthews, North Carolina freshman midfielder totaled eight points on five goals and three assists with 11 draw controls, nine caused turnovers and seven groundballs as the Lions posted a 3-0 record last week. In an 18-4 win over Oglethorpe, Manns tallied one goal, one assist, three groundballs, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. In a 17-1 victory over Huntingdon, Manns totaled two goals, one assist, four draw controls, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Finally, in a 14-3 win over Aurora, Manns scored two goals and dished out one assist with five draw controls, five caused turnovers and one groundball. Johan Ljungdahl, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden earned wins at the number-three singles position and the number-two doubles spot over opponents from USA South foe Christopher Newport in his only action last week. In doubles play, Ljungdahl teamed with Peter Hviid to earn the victory. Also Nominated: Teal Howard, Methodist.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Elizabeth Edwards, LaGrange - The Griffin, Georgia freshman earned a 2-0 record at number-six singles and a 1-1 mark at number-three doubles last week. In singles play, Edwards collected wins over opponents from Emmanuel and Wesleyan (Ga.). In doubles, Edwards teamed with Blake Alford to defeat a team from Wesleyan (Ga.). Also Nominated: None.
