USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 21, 2013

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Graham Craig, LaGrange - The junior quarterback from Hoover, Alabama tied his own single-game school record with five touchdown passes in a 44-40, come from behind, win over USA South rival Huntingdon. Craig completed 24 of 36 passes (66.7%) for 420 yards, good for an 11.7 yards-per-attempt average, including the five scores. He now has 2,368 passing yards on the season which is a new program record. Also Nominated: Travis Felder, Maryville; Tim Reynolds, Ferrum; Dexter Russell, Greensboro; Xavier Morgan, Averett.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Chambers, LaGrange - The Kennesaw, Georgia freshman linebacker recorded three tackles for loss, including two sacks, which resulted in a total loss of 20 yards in a 44-40 win over USA South rival Huntingdon. Chambers tallied 12 total tackles, nine of which were solo take downs. Also Nominated: Dylan Wolfenbarger, Maryville; Ryan Jordan, Ferrum; Julian Cinotti, Greensboro; Zachary Grkman, Averett.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Kyle Smith, Greensboro - The Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina freshman defensive back blocked two punts in the program's first-ever victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, 44-42. Smith's first blocked punt was recovered in the end zone for a Greensboro touchdown while his second block resulted in a Pride score on the ensuing possession. Additionally, Smith recorded five total tackles in the win. Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Asa Fox, Ferrum - The senior forward/midfielder from Sterling, Virginia helped the Panthers to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition with one goal and one assist for three points. In a 3-1 win over Averett, Fox assisted on the first goal of the match in the final minute of the first half. In a 1-0 victory over Greensboro, Fox tallied the only score of the match which became the game-winning goal in the 60th minute. Also Nominated: Patrick Braxton, Maryville; Vincent Thomas, Piedmont; Benjy Slator, Averett.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Justin Robinson, Ferrum - The senior goalkeeper from Front Royal, Virginia posted a 2-0 record, with one shutout, versus USA South competition last week. In 180 minutes in goal, Robinson stopped eight of the nine shots he faced. In a 3-1 win over Averett, Robinson collected four saves. In a 1-0 shutout victory over Greensboro, Robinson totaled four saves. Also Nominated: Thomas Palmer, Maryville; Martin Erenstedt, Averett.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Ashley Howarth, Maryville - The Knoxville, Tennessee senior forward tallied two goals for four points in a 2-0 week versus USA South competition for the Scots. In a 2-1 win over Piedmont, Howarth scored the match's first goal in the 62nd minute. In a 3-0 victory at LaGrange, Howarth tallied the final score of the match with a goal in the last minute of play. Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Kelsey Hopper, Meredith - The Wilmington, North Carolina senior goalkeeper earned a 1-1 record last week, with one shutout, versus USA South competition. In 180 minutes in goal, Hopper stopped 14 of the 15 shots she faced. In a 1-0 loss to Methodist, Hopper collected five saves. In a 2-0 win over then Conference-leader Averett, Hopper tallied nine saves to earn the shutout. Also Nominated: Rachel Leal, Maryville; T'Keyah Henry, Greensboro; Hannah Bales, Covenant.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Karlie Long, Meredith - The freshman outside hitter from Roxboro, North Carolina averaged 4.2 kills and 3.2 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-0 record versus USA South competition. In a 3-2 win over Averett, Long recorded a double-double of 20 kills and 12 digs with two assists, one service ace and one block. In a 3-2 victory over Piedmont, Long tallied a double-double of a match-high 20 kills with 24 digs to go along with two assists, two service aces and two blocks. Finally, in a 3-1 win over Methodist, Long tallied 19 kills, nine digs, three service aces and two blocks. Also Nominated: Kelsey Handel, Maryville; Allison Sparks, Averett; Xandy Green, Piedmont; Chelsea VanDyk, Covenant.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Mallory Bonee, Maryville - The junior defensive specialist from Powell, Tennessee averaged 4.1 digs and 0.6 assists per set as the Scots posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 3-2 win over USA South foe Covenant, Bonee recorded 25 digs, three assists and two service aces. In a 3-1 victory over USA South rival William Peace, Bonee totaled eight digs, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over USA South foe Piedmont, Bonee contributed 22 digs, three assists and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-2 win over Martin Methodist, Bonee recorded 19 digs, three assists and one kill. Also Nominated: Emery McGee, Meredith; Katelyn Holley, Averett; Katie Faith, Piedmont.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Sean Hagstrom, Maryville - The freshman from Oak Ridge, Tennessee placed 50th out of 207 runners at the Berry College Invitational last week. Hagstrom completed the 8K course in a time of 27:56, helping the Scots to a 17th place team finish. Also Nominated: Cody Parker, Piedmont.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Beth Burgess, Covenant - The junior from Nicholasville, Kentucky placed 33rd out of 178 runners at the Berry College Invitational last week. Burgess completed the 6K course in a time of 24:49, helping the Scots to an eighth place team finish. Also Nominated: Carrie Ruis, Piedmont; Ann Chapin Meekins, Meredith.

Jackson recorded five catches, two of which resulted in touchdowns, including a 66-yard score. Also Nominated: Trenton Shuler, Maryville; Joseph Lewis, Greensboro; Cinco Simmons, Averett.

Adil Iich, Averett - The freshman forward from Sodertalje, Sweden helped the Cougars to a 1-1 record last week versus USA South competition with two goals and one assist for five points. In a 3-1 loss at Ferrum, Iich assisted on the team's only goal of the match which, at the time, tied the game. In a 2-0 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Iich tallied the only two scores of the match, the first, in the third minute, was the eventual game-winner. Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Meredith McCarty, Meredith - The Swansboro, North Carolina freshman midfielder helped the Avenging Angels to a 1-1 record last week versus USA South competition with one goal and one assist for three points. In a 1-0 loss versus Methodist, McCarty was held scoreless. In a 2-0 victory over then Conference-leader Averett, McCarty first assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the sixth minute before notching a score of her own in the 67th minute. Also Nominated: Mackenzie Hutton, Maryville; Ebonee Strother, Averett.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week

Ann Chapin Meekins, Meredith - The freshman from Shelby, North Carolina placed 38th out of 118 runners at the Christopher Newport University Invitational last week. Meekins completed the 6K course in a time of 25:13, helping the Avenging Angels to a fifth place team finish. Also Nominated: Carrie Ruis, Piedmont; Anna Hankal, Covenant.
