USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 13, 2014


Football Offensive Player of the Week
Dustin Midgett, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior quarterback from Currituck, North Carolina accounted for 242 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns in a 48-21 win over USA South foe LaGrange. Through the air, Midget completed 12 passes for 193 yards with a school-record six touchdowns. The six scores also ties the USA South record for touchdown passes in a single-game. On the ground, Midgett carried the ball seven times for 49 yards with one touchdown. Also Nominated: Ryan Throndset, Greensboro; Trenton Shuler, Maryville; Noah Shuler, Methodist; Luke Bailey, Huntingdon.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Zach Capehart, Maryville - The Ooltewah, Tennessee junior defensive lineman accumulated 4.5 tackles for loss in a 23-13 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Capehart recorded nine total tackles, five of which were solo, three sacks totaling a loss of 21 yards and one pass breakup. Also Nominated: Rakeem Cooper, N.C. Wesleyan; Zach Brownell, Huntingdon.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Stevorius Kimball, Maryville - The Memphis, Tennessee freshman kick returner averaged 28.3 yards per kickoff return in a 23-13 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Kimball returned three kicks a total of 85 yards and gave Maryville an average starting field position at their own 39 yard-line. Also Nominated: Jordan Rieling, Methodist; Quin Jones, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Ian Meredith, Covenant - The senior forward from Nairobi, Kenya tallied two goals with one assist in a 1-1 week versus USA South competition for the Scots. In a 1-0 loss at Methodist, Meredith was held scoreless. In a 4-1 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Meredith scored the game's first goal in the seventh minute, assisted on the eventual game-winning score in the 14th minute and capped the scoring in the 74th minute with his second goal. Also Nominated: Robbie Barnes, Greensboro; Sam Muir, Averett; Payne Fisher, Maryville; Seth Harrison, Methodist; Vincent Thomas, Piedmont.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Rabone, Methodist - The freshman goalkeeper from Dubai, United Arab Emirates led the Monarchs to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition by stopping all four shots shots he faced in 180 minutes in net while recording two shutouts. In a 1-0 win over Covenant, Rabone made two saves en route to the shutout. In a 1-0 win over Maryville, Rabone again stopped two shots and posted a shutout. Also Nominated: Logan Rohde, Greensboro; Martin Erenstedt, Averett; Ben Munger, Maryville; Alex Brown, Huntingdon.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Allison Gibson, Greensboro - The Gibsonville, North Carolina senior forward tallied three goals for six points in a 2-0 week for The Pride versus USA South competition. In a 4-1 victory over Huntingdon, Gibson scored the team's third goal of the match in the 65th minute. In a 3-1 win over LaGrange, Gibson tallied the contest's final two scores including the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute. Also Nominated: Kalyn Dumanowsky, Piedmont; Morgan Funck, Ferrum; Jamison Kidd, Meredith; Annalies Jobsis, Averett; Eleni Mavres, Maryville; Deycasha Miller, Methodist.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Jaisa Loch, Meredith - The Grimesland, North Carolina freshman goalkeeper helped the Avenging Angels to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition by making eight total saves in 180 minutes in net with two shutouts. In a 1-0 win over Maryville, Loch stopped all six shots she faced en route to the shutout. In a 3-0 victory over William Peace, Loch made two saves to earn the shutout. Also Nominated: Michaela Gardner, Piedmont; Jessica Thatcher, Greensboro; Kim Josephson, Averett; Mackenzie Hutton, Maryville; Eryka Underwood, Methodist.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Nicole Barringer, Averett - The senior setter from Landis, North Carolina averaged 11.7 assists, 2.6 digs and 0.9 kills per set as the Cougars posted a 2-1 record versus USA South Competition last week. In a 3-0 win at Methodist, Barringer notched 38 assists, five digs, four kills and one service ace. In a 3-2 loss to Piedmont, Barringer tallied a double-double of 64 assists and 19 digs to go along with five kills and three service aces. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Ferrum, Barringer totaled 27 assists, five digs, four kills and one service ace. Also Nominated: Kelsey Handel, Maryville; Kaitlin Norman, Piedmont; Karlie Long, Meredith; Ginny Moore, Covenant; Megan Mansfield, William Peace.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Carson Williams, William Peace - The freshman defensive specialist from Dunn, North Carolina averaged 4.4 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 2-1 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Williams totaled 11 digs, two assists and one kill. In a 3-0 loss to Randolph, Williams posted 13 digs. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Salem, Williams contributed 16 digs and one assist. Also Nominated: Sophia Del Campo, Maryville; Emery McGee, Meredith; Nicole Barringer, Averett; Heather LaPrade, Piedmont.


Rookies of the Week

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Gregory Clifton, Greensboro - The freshman wide receiver from Wake Forest, North Carolina caught two touchdowns in a 63-35 loss to USA South rival Methodist. Clifton piled up 147 receiving yards on ten catches with the two scores. Also Nominated: Dwayne Bishop, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Brandon Boyd, Methodist - The freshman defensive back from Greenville, South Carolina made five total tackles and grabbed two interceptions in a 63-35 victory over USA South foe Greensboro. Boyd tallied three solo tackles with two assisted take downs. His interceptions came inside the Methodist five-yard line to thwart potential touchdowns. Also Nominated: Rashad Johnson, Ferrum; Anthony Janezic, N.C. Wesleyan; Jake Dean, LaGrange; Parker Allen, Huntingdon.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Stefan Cyvin, Methodist - The freshman forward from Trondheim, Norway scored one game-winning goal in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs versus USA South competition. In a 1-0 win over Covenant, Cyvin scored in the 59th minute to put his team in-front for good. In a 1-0 win over Maryville, Cyvin was held scoreless on two shots. Also Nominated: Jared Heller, Greensboro; Kyle Mosley, Averett; Cody Vankerschaever, Maryville; Cason Dowdy, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Amanda Gustavsson, Averett - The Laholm, Sweden freshman midfielder helped the Cougars to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition by scoring two eventual game-winning goals. In a 2-0 victory over LaGrange, Gustavsson notched a score in the nineth minute to give her team the lead for good. In a 5-0 victory over Huntingdon, Gustavsson scored the first goal of the contest in the second minute of play. Also Nominated: Shayna Healy, Piedmont; Jaisa Loch, Meredith; Kara Tubb, Maryville; Jasmine Newman, Methodist.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Ginny Moore, Covenant - The freshman outside hitter from Fort Myers, Florida averaged 4.1 kills, a .382 hitting percentage and 1.8 digs per set as the Scots posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Agnes Scott, Moore posted six kills and three digs. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Greensboro, Moore totaled 12 kills, six digs, two assists, one service ace and one block. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Moore contributed 15 kills, five digs and two service aces. Also Nominated: Maggie Harris, Methodist; Kait Steele, Piedmont; Hannah Blaylock, Meredith; Hannah Shields, Averett; Baylee Maughon, William Peace.
