USA South Athletes of the Week - Feb. 16, 2015

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Spencer Shoffner, Maryville - The junior wing from Oak Ridge, Tennessee averaged 24.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per contest in a 2-0 week for the Scots versus USA South competition. In a 97-71 win over Huntingdon, Shoffner set a new single-game school record with ten three-pointers made en route to totaling 34 points with seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. In an 86-80 victory over LaGrange, Shoffner scored 14 points, grabbed two rebounds, collected one steal and blocked one shot. Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Jacole Hairston, Ferrum - The Martinsville, Virginia senior guard averaged 26.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per contest in a 3-0 week for the Panthers versus USA South competition. In an 82-74 win over Greensboro, became the school's all-time leading scorer while totaling a career-high 41 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. The 41-points scored is currently tied for the sixth-highest single-game total in Division III this season. In a 74-33 victory at Meredith, Hairston contributed 23 points, five assists, one rebound and one block. Finally, in a 58-40 win at William Peace, Hairston scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, collected three steals, dished out one assist and blocked one shot. Also Nominated: Kenyata Harris, N.C. Baseball Player of the Week
Jordan Powell, Greensboro - The senior infielder from Raleigh, North Carolina went a combined 9-for-13 (.692) with nine RBI, three runs scored, two doubles, one triple, one walk and two stolen bases as the Pride took two out of three games from USA South foe Averett last week. In a game-three series-clinching win, Powell was 4-for-5 with five RBI, one run scored and one double. Also Nominated: Lane Deaver, Ferrum; Alex Rodriguez, Methodist; Ty Edwards, LaGrange; Will Skidmore, Piedmont; Drew Evans, Averett; Scott Gillespie, Covenant.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Adam Murray, Greensboro - The Pembroke Pines, Florida freshman earned his first-career win by tossing a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 victory over USA South foe Averett in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Pride. Murray went the distance and allowed five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Dillon Weaver, Ferrum; Travis Johnson, Methodist; Josh Thomas, Piedmont; Brandon Goff, Averett; Lawson Wishard, Maryville; Garrett Kriston, Covenant.

 

Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Alex Bonner, LaGrange - The freshman guard from Griffin, Georgia averaged 13.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per contest in a 2-1 week for the Panthers versus USA South competition. In a 91-63 win over Huntingdon, Bonner totaled 12 points, two assists, one rebound and one steal. In an 89-86 victory at Piedmont, Bonner contributed 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Finally, in an 86-80 loss at Maryville, Bonner scored nine points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists. Also Nominated: James Contreras Jr., Averett; Marquise Lanier, Piedmont; Adrian Moore, N.C. Wesleyan; Calvin Songster, Maryville.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Samm Chandler, Averett - The Burnsville, North Carolina freshman guard averaged a double-double of 15.3 points and 10.3 rebounds to go along with 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks per contest in a 2-1 week for the Cougars versus USA South competition. In an 83-33 win over Mary Baldwin, Chandler notched a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a career-high six assists and two steals. In a 66-64 loss to Methodist, Chandler tallied her second double-double of the week with 12 points and ten rebounds to go along with three blocks, one assist and one steal. Finally, in a 66-59 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Chandler totaled 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Also Nominated: Erin March, Ferrum; Rachel Hawn, Maryville.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Kyle Vidano, Averett - The freshman infielder from Charlottesville, Virginia went a combined 5-for-19 (.263) with three runs scored, one run batted in, two doubles and two walks as the Cougars posted a 1-3 record last week. In a 9-3 loss at Guilford, Vidano was 1-for-4 with one double and one walk. In a three-game series loss to USA South foe Greensboro, Vidano was a combined 4-for-15 with three runs scored, one run batted in, one double and one walk. Also Nominated: None.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
