USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 14, 2015

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Trenton Shuler, Maryville - The junior running back from Maryville, Tennessee scored two touchdowns, rushed for 107 yards and totaled 56 receiving yards in a 28-21 victory over Division I-FCS East Tennessee State last week. Shuler carried the ball 25 times for an average of 4.3 yards per rush. He caught the eventual game-winning touchdown pass with less than ten minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Dylan DeGroot, Methodist - The freshman quarterback from Fort Myers, Florida threw for 103 yards in a 55-7 loss to Guilford. DeGroot was 10-for-21 with a long completion of 28 yards. Also Nominated: Sean Bowman, Averett.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Willie Marshall, Greensboro
- The Apollo Beach, Florida sophomore defensive back recorded five total tackles and collected two interceptions in a 38-21 loss to Bridgewater. Marshall made four solo tackles with one assisted take down and added one pass breakup. His interceptions came in the first and fourth quarters and were returned for a total of 47 yards. Also Nominated: Elijah Harris, Averett; Zach Capehart, Maryville; Bryan Bing, Methodist; Demetrius Rodgers, LaGrange.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Tevis Dasher, Methodist - The freshman linebacker from Folkston, Georgia totaled seven tackles, all solo take downs, two of which were for a loss of yardage in a 55-7 loss to Guilford. Dasher collected one sack while his two tackles for loss totaled seven yards. Also Nominated: Franchez Marshall, Maryville; Octavius Ross, Averett.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Brandon Boyd, Methodist - The Greenville, North Carolina sophomore defensive back returned two kickoffs for a total of 148 yards, including one for a 93-yard touchdown. Also Nominated: Max Peets, Maryville; Hobie Proctor, Averett.

 

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Caleb Lucas, Maryville - The junior forward from Maryville, Tennessee tallied three goals with one assist in a 2-0 week for the Scots. In a 2-1 win at Wilmington (OH), Lucas scored both of his team's goals including the eventual game-winner in 26th minute. In a 4-0 victory over Berea, Lucas assisted on the first goal of the match before scoring one of his own in the 14th minute. Also Nominated: Jordan Palma, Averett; Kristian Javier, LaGrange.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Jon Taylor, Maryville - The senior goalkeeper from Milford, Ohio led the Scots to a 2-0 record last week by stopping eight of the nine shots he faced in 180 minutes in net. In a 2-1 win over Wilmington (OH), Taylor collected six saves. In a 4-0 victory over Berea, Taylor posted the shutout by stopping two shots. Also Nominated: Husa Dukic, Averett.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Ville Hautakangas, Averett - The freshman midfielder from Espoo, Finland tallied one goal as the Cougars posted an 0-2 record. In a 3-1 loss to Berry, Hautakangas was scoreless. In a 3-2 loss to Oglethorpe, Hautakangas scored in the 40th minute to give the Cougars a two-goal lead. Also Nominated: Ian Schomer, Maryville.

 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Chloe Hudson, Ferrum - The Virginia Beach, Virginia sophomore midfielder tallied four goals with one assist in a 2-0 week for the Panthers. In a 1-0 victory over Emory & Henry, Hudson notched the only goal of the match in the 38th minute. In a 5-2 victory over Eastern Mennonite, tallied a hat trick with three goals while also adding an assist. Also Nominated: Brenda Santamaria, Mary Baldwin; Meghan Cole, Greensboro; Amanda Gustavsson, Averett.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Ae'Niesha Mar, Ferrum - The Waynesboro, Virginia junior defender helped the Panthers defense record one shutout as she also scored one goal in a 2-0 week. In a 1-0 win over Emory & Henry the Ferrum defense allowed just one shot on goal. In a 5-2 victory over Eastern Mennonite, Mar contributed offensively as she scored the final goal of the match in the 89th minute. Also Nominated: Brittany Morrison, Greensboro; Michaela Gardner, Piedmont; Ashley Jones, Averett; Clara Tapplin, Huntingdon.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Jessica Wallace, Meredith - The Kitty Hawk, North Carolina freshman forward scored three goals in an 0-2 week for the Avenging Angels. In a 5-4 loss to Bridgewater, Wallace tallied her first career hat trick with three goals. In a 1-0 loss to Washington & Lee, Wallace led the team with two shots on goal. Also Nominated: Cassidy Reich, Piedmont; Kaitlyn Barbour, Averett; Leah Leach, Huntingdon; Rachel Jenkins, LaGrange.

 

Volleyball Player of the Week
Hannah Shields, Averett - The sophomore outside hitter from Keeling, Virginia averaged 5.75 kills, with a .256 hitting percentage, 2.63 digs and 0.81 service aces per set as the Cougars posted a 2-2 record last week at the Washington and Lee Invitational. In a 3-0 win over Southern Virginia, Shields totaled 22 kills, seven digs, six service aces and one block. In a 3-2 loss at Washington and Lee, Shields notched a double-double of 28 kills and 11 digs with four service aces and one assist. In a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg, Shields tallied a double-double of 27 kills and 15 digs with three blocks, one service ace and one assist. Finally, in a 3-1 loss to Wittenberg, Shields contributed 15 kills, nine digs, two service aces and one assist. For her efforts, Shields was named to the All-Invitational team. Also Nominated: Karlie Long, Meredith; Shayla Moss, Greensboro; Tori Stewart, N.C. Wesleyan; Bria Rochelle, Huntingdon; Cassidy Hayes, Methodist.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Aspen Coggins, LaGrange - The junior defensive specialist from Kathleen, Georgia averaged 4.57 digs per set as the Panthers posted a 2-2 record. She also added four kills, four service aces and four assists last week. In a 3-0 loss to Fisk, Coggins totaled 14 digs, one kill and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Wesleyan, Coggins contributed six digs and one assist. In a 3-2 victory over Huntingdon, Coggins tallied 24 digs, two kills, two service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-0 loss to Sewanee, Coggins totaled 20 digs, two assists, one kill and one service ace. Also Nominated: Carson Williams, William Peace; Kaitlyn Flickinger, Maryville; Tori Belcher, Greensboro; Christiana Summa, Averett; Lauren Condon, Huntingdon; Karly Klimas, Methodist.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Keenan Marks, Averett - The freshman setter from Jacksonville, North Carolina averaged 10.31 assists and 2.44 digs per set as the Cougars posted a 2-2 record last week at the Washington and Lee Invitational. In a 3-0 win over Southern Virginia, Marks totaled 36 assists, six digs, one kill and one block. In a 3-2 loss at Washington and Lee, Marks notched 49 assists, eight digs and two kills. In a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg, Marks tallied a double-double of 47 assists and 14 digs with three blocks, one kill and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-1 loss to Wittenberg, Marks tallied a double-double of 33 assists and 11 digs with three kills and one service ace. Also Nominated: Kennedey Paine, William Peace; Tori Belcher, Greensboro; Taylor Smith, N.C. Wesleyan; Ashton Flores, Huntingdon; Brittany Ter Meer, Methodist; Lauren Sanders, LaGrange.

 

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Cody Parker, Piedmont - The junior from Clarkesville, Georgia placed 75th out of 174 runners at the Furman Invitational last week. Parker completed the 8K course in a time of 28:27, helping the Lions to a 16th place team finish. Also Nominated: Micha Sneller, Covenant; Jacob Santangelo, Averett.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Clayton Thayer, Piedmont -  The freshman from Flowery Branch, Georgia placed 83rd out of 174 runners at the Furman Invitational last week. Thayer completed the 8K course in a time of 28:44, helping the Lions to a 16th place team finish. Also Nominated: Micah Sneller, Covenant; Damion Bishoff, Averett.

 

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Spookie Eaves, Covenant - The senior from Lakeland, Florida placed 36th out of 206 runners at the Furman Invitational last week. Eaves completed the 6K course in a time of 24:16, helping the Scots to a 13th place team finish. Also Nominated: Macy Brinson, Meredith; Kali Carr, Mary Baldwin; Frida Lundquist, Averett; Reese Bowles, Piedmont; Sarah Bearden, LaGrange.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Macy Brinson, Meredith - The freshman from Emerald Isle, North Carolina placed fifth out of 61 runners at the Barton Invitational last week. Brinson completed the 5K course in a time of 20:44, helping the Avenging Angels to a second place team finish. Also Nominated: Lilly Smith, Covenant; Kali Carr, Mary Baldwin; Frida Lundquist, Averett; Mackenzie Devine, Piedmont.
