USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 28, 2015

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Sebastian Wiiala, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior forward from Stockholm, Sweden tallied all two goal and one assist last week as the Bishops posted a 2-0 record. In a 2-0 win over Guilford, Wiiala scored both of the team's goals including the eventual game-winner in the 40th minute. In a 4-0 victory over USA South rival Averett, Wiiala assisted on the third score of the match in the 58th minute. Also Nominated: Caleb Lucas, Maryville; Shaun Watt, Greensboro; Jordan Palma, Averett; Noah Wiersema, Covenant; Eirik Nordseth, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior defender from Borgames, Iceland helped the Bishop defense post two shutouts last week while also adding a goal and an assist. In a 2-0 win over Guilford, the Bishop defense allowed just three shots on goal. In a 4-0 victory over USA South foe Averett, Thorfinnsson assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the 15th minute before scoring a goal of his own in the 58th minute. Also Nominated: Brandon Baksh, Maryville; Jaime Payamps, Greensboro; John Matrisciano, Averett; Daniel Kubin, Covenant; Alex Brown, Huntingdon.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
David Cuperman, Averett - The freshman midfielder from Bogota, Colombia scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime to defeat USA South rival Piedmont, 3-2. In other action last week, Cuperman was held scoreless with two shots in a 4-0 loss to USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan. Also Nominated: George Davies, Maryville; Sheriff Secka, N.C. Wesleyan; Nathan Metzger, Piedmont; Carlos Barragan, Greensboro; Fredrik Aalberg, Methodist.

 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sierra Siegel, Maryville - The Valrico, Florida senior forward scored a goal and assisted on another in the team's only contest last week, a 2-0 victory over USA South foe Ferrum. Siegel first assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the 25th minute before added an insurance goal of her own in the 82nd minute. Also Nominated: Allie Vannoy, Covenant; Meredith McCarty, Meredith; Amanda Gustavsson, Averett; Shelby Clark, Huntingdon.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Rachel Lemay, Covenant - The freshman goalkeeper from Apopka, Florida posted a shutout in a 1-0 victory over USA South foe Ferrum in the team's only contest last week. Lemay turned away all six shots she faced. Also Nominated: Mackenzie Hutton, Maryville; Vanessa Batchelor, N.C. Wesleyan; Michaela Gardner, Piedmont; Jaisa Loch, Meredith; Ly'Shanette Major, Greensboro; Clara Tapplin, Huntingdon.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Allie Vannoy, Covenant - The Rising Fawn, Georgia sophomore forward, playing her first season of collegiate soccer, tallied the game-winning goal in 59th minute of a 1-0 victory over USA South foe Ferrum in the only contest last week for the Scots. Also Nominated: Natasha Enrique, Maryville; Maggie Rankin, N.C. Wesleyan; Jazmin Penado, Piedmont; Tori Cutlip, LaGrange; Jessica Wallace, Meredith; Julyana Devonish, Greensboro; Kaitlyn Barbour, Averett; Jenna Maschino, Huntingdon; Dahlia Guin, Methodist.

 

Volleyball Player of the Week
Chelsea VanDyk, Covenant - The senior middle hitter from Manhattan, Montana averaged 4.82 kills per set with a .588 hitting percentage as the Scots posted a 1-2 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Piedmont, VanDyk tallied 15 kills, five digs, two service aces, one assist and one block. In a 3-1 loss to 21st-ranked Berry, VanDyk posted 17 kills, a .615 hitting percentage, five blocks, two digs, two service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-1 loss at Centre, VanDyk contributed 21 kills, two service aces, one assist and one block. Also Nominated: Mallory Leary, Piedmont; Karlie Long, Meredith; Shayla Moss, Greensboro; Liana Solomon, William Peace; Hannah Shields, Averett; Audrianna Hargitt, Huntingdon; Cassidy Hayes, Methodist.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Ariana Buchanan, Covenant - The freshman defensive specialist from Decatur, Texas averaged 5.00 digs and 1.09 assists per set as the Scots posted a 1-2 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Piedmont, Buchanan tallied nine digs and four assists. In a 3-1 loss to 21st-ranked Berry, Buchanan posted 23 digs, four assists and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-1 loss at Centre, Buchanan contributed 23 digs and four assists. Also Nominated: Heather Laprade, Piedmont; Jasmine Aguinaldo, Meredith; Carson Williams, William Peace; Tori Belcher, Greensboro; Christiana Summa, Averett; Lauren Condon, Huntingdon.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Keenan Marks, Averett - The freshman setter from Jacksonville, North Carolina averaged 9.46 assists and 1.23 digs per set as the Cougars posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 3-1 win over USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Marks, in two sets played, totaled 15 assists, three digs, one kill, one service ace and one block. In a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater, Marks tallied 32 assists, four digs, two kills, two service aces and one block. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Methodist, Marks notched 35 assists. Finally, in a 3-2 victory over USA South foe Meredith, Marks contributed 41 assists, nine digs, three kills and three service aces. Also Nominated: Emily Peters, Piedmont; Lexi Hall, LaGrange; Meredith Summers, Greensboro; Ariana Buchanan, Covenant; Ashton Flores, Huntingdon.

 

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Clayton Thayer, Piedmont - The freshman from Flowery Branch, Georgia placed 76th out of 199 runners at the Rhodes College Invitational last week. Thayer completed the 8K course in a time of 28:35, helping the Lions 17th place team finish. Also Nominated: Jacob Santangelo, Averett.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Clayton Thayer, Piedmont - The freshman from Flowery Branch, Georgia placed 76th out of 199 runners at the Rhodes College Invitational last week. Thayer completed the 8K course in a time of 28:35, helping the Lions 17th place team finish. Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Kali Carr, Mary Baldwin - The freshman from Staunton, Virginia placed 14th out of 167 runners at the Greensboro, North Carolina Invitational last week. She was the top Division III finisher. Carr completed the 5K course in a time of 20:10, helping the Fighting Squirrels place first among Division III teams and eighth overall. Her time is the fourth-best in school-history at the 5K distance. Also Nominated: Reese Bowels, Piedmont; Shelbee Knopf, Methodist.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
