USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 9, 2017

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Donavan Griffith, Greensboro - The senior forward from Greensboro, North Carolina scored a team-high 24 points in a 98-80 victory over USA South rival Averett in the team's only action last week. Griffith also added seven rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal in the win. Also Nominated: Berto Dryden, Covenant; Chase England, Piedmont; Justyn Olson, LaGrange; Charles Bryant, Averett.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Caleb Haynes, Covenant - The Section, Alabama freshman forward scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked one shot in a 93-82, overtime, victory over USA South rival LaGrange in the team's only contest last week. Haynes scored seven of his points in the extra session as the Scots pulled away for the win. Also Nominated: Elijah Alston, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Zarkia Mattox, Ferrum The Rocky Mount, Virginia junior guard notched game-highs in points, assists and steals in a 63-61 victory over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan in the team's only action last week. Mattox scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out six assists and collected six steals in the win. Also Nominated: Rasheika Gregory, Greensboro; Lauren Johnson, LaGrange; Makayla Ray, William Peace; Carlie Shields, Piedmont; Joanna Smith, Covenant; Frida Lundquist, Averett.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Makayla Ray, William Peace - The Asheville, North Carolina freshman forward averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game last week as the Pacers posted a 2-0 record. In a 104-78 win over Southern Virginia, Ray posted a career-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. In a 60-46 victory over Hollins, Ray contributed 12 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block, Also Nominated: Amari Price, Piedmont; Brooke Carthon, Averett.
