USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 23, 2017

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Charles Bryant, Averett - The senior forward from Jarratt, Virginia averaged a double-double 21.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week versus USA South competition for the Cougars. In an 71-58 win over Ferrum, Bryant notched a double-double of 22 points and ten rebounds with one block. In a 98-74 loss to William Peace, Bryant totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, one steal and one block. Finally, in a 76-72 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, tallied a double-double of 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds with two assists and one steal. Also Nominated: Davion Ayabarreno, Methodist; Joseph Gatling, Greensboro; Josh Grimard, Ferrum; Dante Hoppa, Maryville; Bailey Spragg, Covenant; Drew Vanderbrook, LaGrange.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
A.J. Frye, N.C. Wesleyan - The Wilmington, North Carolina freshman forward averaged 18.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 blocks per game in a 1-2 week versus USA South competition for the Bishops. In a 102-96, overtime, win over Greensboro, Frye totaled 20 points, nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. In a 78-62 loss to Ferrum, Frye contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, one steal and one block. Finally, in a 76-72 loss to Averett, Frye tallied 17 points, two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. Also Nominated: Moriba Diaby, Averett; Camden Ferguson, William Peace; Caleb Haynes, Covenant; Darus Maddox, Greensboro; Malcolm Walker, Maryville.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Zarkia Mattox, Ferrum The Rocky Mount, Virginia junior guard averaged 18.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.0 steals and 3.7 assists per game in a 3-0 week versus USA South competition. In a 70-44 victory over Mary Baldwin, Mattox totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, six steals, five assists and one block. In a 61-36 win over Meredith, Mattox notched a double-double of 13 points and ten rebounds with four steals and two assists. Finally, in a 79-60 victory over Averett, Mattox tallied 29 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists. Also Nominated: Lauren Biliter, Maryville; Emma Grimes, Covenant; Jeris Johnson, LaGrange; Frida Lundquist, Averett; Mikayla Seivers, Salem; Monica Smalls, Greensboro.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Makayla Ray, William Peace The Asheville, North Carolina freshman forward averaged a double-double of 11.3 points and 14.3 rebounds to go along with 2.3 blocks  and 1.3 steals per game in a 3-0 week versus USA South competition for the Pacers. In an 86-75 victory over Averett, Ray tallied a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds with two steals, two blocks and one assist. In a 77-63 win over Methodist, Ray notched a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds with two blocks and one assist. Finally, in a 56-42 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Ray totaled eight points, a career-high 16 rebounds, three blocks and one assist. Also Nominated: Brooke Carthon, Averett; Christian Sanders, Methodist.
