USA South Athletes of the Week - Feb. 27, 2017

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Nate Gardner, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore third baseman from Hertford, North Carolina went a combined 12-for-23 (.522) with a .542 on-base percentage and a .652 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, seven RBI, three doubles and one stolen base as the Bishops notched a 5-0 week. In a 20-1 win over Maine-Presque Isle, Gardner was hitless with one run scored and one stolen base. In a 13-12 victory over St. Andrews, Gardner was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two doubles. Finally, in a three-game sweep of USA South foe Averett, Gardner was a combined 9-for-14 with four runs scored, seven RBI and one double. Additionally, on the mound, Gardner started two games and earned a win with a no-decision by allowing just one earned run in 11 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Evan Heffner, Maryville - The junior from Ponte Vedra, Florida earned a victory over USA South foe Piedmont in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Scots. In eight innings pitched, Heffner allowed one run on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Piero Amador, Greensboro; James Culbreth, Averett; Nate Gardner, N.C. Wesleyan; Greg Johnson, Methodist; Ben McCurley, Piedmont; Hunter Peck, Ferrum; Andrew Weekley, LaGrange.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Wes Powell, Huntingdon - The freshman infielder from Cantonment, Florida went a combined 8-for-15 (.533) with a .563 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, five RBI, two doubles, one walk and one sacrifice as the Hawks dropped four games last week versus quality competition. In a 10-5 loss to Washington & Lee, who received votes in the D3baseball.com Preseason Poll, was 2-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and one double. In a three-game series with preseason fourth-ranked Emory, Powell was a combined 6-for-11 with three runs scored, three RBI, one walk and one sacrifice. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Tyler Garam, Greensboro - The freshman from Tampa, Florida picked up his first collegiate win by throwing four innings of scoreless relief in a 17-6 victory over Guilford in his only appearance on the mound for the Pride last week. Garam allowed just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts. Also Nominated: Zach Messinger, Maryville; Noah Shrock, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Jessica Long, Averett - The senior shortstop from Prospect Hill, North Carolina went a combined 8-for-14 (.571) with a .667 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, three RBI, three doubles, five stolen bases and four walks as the Cougars earned a 3-1 record last week. In a 5-3 win over Wilson, Long was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one run batted in, two doubles, one walk and one stolen base. In a 17-3 victory over Olivet, Long was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, two stolen bases and one walk. In a 2-1 win over Piedmont, Long was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one stolen base. Finally, in a 7-5 loss to 11th-ranked Emory, Long was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one double, two walks and one stolen base. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Taylor Bailey, Averett - The freshman from Stern, North Carolina earned two complete-game victories in two starts last week for the Cougars. Eckman tossed a total of 16.0 innings, allowing four unearned runs on 16 hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. In a 5-3 victory over Wilson, Bailey allowed three unearned runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. In a 2-1 victory over Piedmont, Bailey allowed one unearned run on seven hits with zero walks and four strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kelsey Durham, William Peace; Casey Joliff, Maryville; Logan Lowery, N.C. Wesleyan; Sarah Walker, Piedmont; Maddy Wetherholt, Greensboro.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett - The freshman utility player from Alton, Virginia went a combined 7-for-13 (.538) with a .588 on-base percentage and a .769 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, nine RBI, one home run, three walks, four stolen bases and one sacrifice fly as the Cougars earned a 3-1 record last week. In a 5-3 win over Wilson, Aherron was 1-for-3 with two RBI, one stolen base and one sacrifice fly. In a 17-3 victory over Olivet, Aherron was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, five RBI, two stolen bases and one walk. In a 2-1 win over Piedmont, Aherron was 2-for-3 with one walk and one stolen base. Finally, in a 7-5 loss to 11th-ranked Emory, Aherron was 1-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI, one home run and one walk. WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Holly Hite, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina sophomore midfielder totaled eight points on seven goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Avenging Angels. She also added 11 draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. In a 14-7 win over Guilford, Hite tallied three goals with six draw controls and one ground ball. In an 11-10, overtime, win over Roanoke, Hite scored four times with one assist, five draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Also Nominated: Caitlin O'Brien, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Alyssa Codispoti, Meredith - The Raleigh, North Carolina sophomore defender totaled eight ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls to go along with one goal in a 2-0 week for the Avenging Angels. In a 14-7 win over Guilford, Codispoti collected five ground balls and one caused turnover while also scoring once. In an 11-10, overtime, win over Roanoke, Codispoti grabbed three ground balls, collected two draw controls  and caused two turnovers. Also Nominated: Blake Forrest, Piedmont.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Rowan Bumpass, Piedmont - The Keller, Texas freshman attacker tallied five goals and collected three ground balls with one draw control in a 2-0 week for the Lions. In a 15-6 win over Birmingham Southern, Bumpass tallied three goals with two ground balls. In a 12-6 victory over Otterbein, Bumpass scored twice with one ground ball and one draw control. Also Nominated: Haley Whitfield, Meredith.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Matthew Harvie, Covenant - The junior from Grayson, Georgia earned a 2-0 record at number-one singles and a 2-1 mark at the top doubles spot last week for the Scots. In singles play, Harvie defeated opponents from Millsaps and Rhodes. In doubles action, Harvie teamed with Chris Cox to defeat competitors from Rhodes and Hendrix. Also Nominated: Nathan Metzger, Piedmont; R.J. Clement, Methodist; Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan; Caius Blomqvist, Averett.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Caius Blomqvist, Averett - The freshman from Helsinki, Finland earned a 1-1 record at number-one singles and a 2-0 mark at the top doubles spot last week for the Cougars. In singles play, Blomqvist earn a victory over an opponent from Guilford. In doubles action, Blomqvist teamed with Lauri Soome to defeat competitors from Washington & Lee and Guilford. Also Nominated: None.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett - The sophomore from Oulu, Finland earned a 2-0 record at both number-one singles and doubles last week for the Cougars. The victories came over opponents from Sweet Briar and Guilford as she teamed with Hannah Mattson for the doubles wins. Also Nominated: Gracie Smith, Covenant; Ashton Walker, Methodist; Dusty Catala, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Dusty Catala, Huntingdon - The freshman from LaBelle, Florida earned a 3-0 record at number-one singles with a 2-0 combined doubles mark last week for the Hawks. In singles play, Catala defeated opponents from Point along with USA South foes Wesleyan and Agnes Scott. In doubles action, Catala teamed with Zoya Robinson at the number-two position to earn a victory over Point before teaming with Mariah Bastos at the number-three spot to gain a win over Agnes Scott. Also Nominated: Miriam Lindberg, Averett.
