USA South Announces 2017 Hall of Fame Class

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference is pleased to announce its 2017 Hall of Fame Class. The 2017 class includes three former student-athletes and one current coach. Averett University, Christopher Newport University and N.C. Wesleyan College are each represented in this year's class. The inductees will be officially honored and recognized during a ceremony on the campus of Averett University on Monday, June 12, 2017.

The members of the 2017 USA South Hall of Fame Class are current Averett volleyball head coach, Danny Miller, former Averett golfer, Janne Mommo, former N.C. Wesleyan baseball standout, Carl Payne, and former Christopher Newport women's basketball star, Chelsie Schweers.

The 2017 Class will be the eighth group inducted into the League's Hall of Fame.

The 2017 USA South Hall of Fame Inductees:

Janne Mommo was a member of Averett University's 2003 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship team during his final year on campus (2000-2003). That same year, Mommo captured the NCAA Division III Individual National Championship. Both the team and individual national championships were firsts for the Averett men's golf program. He was a three-time All-American while guiding the Cougars to three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Mommo was a four-time All-Conference honoree and the 2000 Rookie of the Year. Academically, he was named a Cleveland Golf & Coaches Association of America All-American Scholar. Following graduation, Mommo continued to play golf professionally in Europe. Finally, in 2011, Mommo was inducted into the Averett University Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2014 was named to the USA South 50th Anniversary Golf Team.

Carl Payne was a two-time All-American while starring on the N.C. Wesleyan College baseball team (1983-1985). As a pitcher, he was named First Team All-Conference three times, All-Region three times and was a part of three consecutive Conference titles. Payne was a member of the 1983 NCAA Division III South Region All-Tournament Team and was named the N.C. Wesleyan Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year in 1984. At the end of his career as a Battling Bishop, Payne held the program records for career and single-season wins, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts as well as career ERA. All of those statistics remain ranked in the top-five in program history but his win total of 29 still stands as the school record. Payne's #14 jersey is one of only five to be retired from the sport of baseball at N.C. Wesleyan. Following his days in Rocky Mount, Payne was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1985. Finally, Payne was inducted into the N.C. Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and was a member of the USA South's 50th Anniversary Baseball team in 2014.

Chelsie Schweers was the first four-time All-American in Christopher Newport University history while starring on the women's basketball team (2008-2011). She was the 2011 & National Player of the Year, a three-time South Region Player of the Year, a three-time USA South Player of the Year and the 2008 National and South Region Rookie of the Year. Schweers was named All-Conference, All-State, All-Region and All-USA South Tournament each of her four seasons. She collected USA South Tournament MVP honors each of the three years she led her team to a championship. Schweers helped lead the Captains to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program's first ever Final Four appearance, finishing third in 2011 as she was named to the All-Tournament team. She currently holds 16 different USA South records including the marks for career free-throw percentage, three-point percentage, three-point attempts, three-pointers made, field goal attempts, field goals made and scoring average. Additionally, Schweers is the NCAA Division III record holder for three-pointers made in a career (415) and a single season (133). Following graduation, she became the first CNU women's basketball player to play professionally overseas, earning multiple honors for her play in Greece, Iceland and Australia. Schweers was recently inducted into the Christopher Newport University Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2014 was named to the USA South 50th Anniversary Women's Basketball team.

Danny Miller has served Averett University as a head coach of two different sports for a total of 22 years (1995-present). He has been the head volleyball coach for all of those 22 years while also adding seven years as the head women's tennis coach. On the volleyball court, Miller has compiled a 557-270 (277-54 in USA South) record good for a .674 career winning percentage ranking him in the top-25 of active NCAA Division III coaches. He has led his teams to four NCAA Tournament appearances, seven Conference Tournament titles and 12 League Regular Season crowns. Miller has earned Conference Coach of the Year eight times which is the most of any coach in the sport of volleyball. He has groomed seven American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans, 11 Conference players of the year, seven Conference rookies of the year, one Conference libero of the year, 84 League all-conference selections, 49 Conference all-tournament team selections, 84 academic all-conference selections, three academic All-Americans, eight academic all-region selections and four USA South Don Scalf Award winners. Off the court, Miller chaired the USA South Volleyball Coaches Committee for 16 years, chaired the AVCA All-American Committee for seven years and served on the NCAA Division III Volleyball Committee as well as the NCAA Women's Volleyball Rules Committee for four years. Currently, in addition to his coaching duties, Miller serves as the University's Associate Director of Athletics and is its Compliance Officer. Finally, in 2010, he was inducted into the Averett University Athletic Hall of Fame.
