USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 30, 2017

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Brian Mann, Ferrum - The sophomore running back from Pearisburg, Virginia rushed for 232 yards and one touchdown in a 19-14 victory over USA South foe Methodist last week. Mann carried the ball 41 times for an average of 5.7 yards per attempt. He also caught one pass for 12 yards. Also Nominated: Myles Bennett, Averett; Brandon Leake, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Brandon Thompson, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman quarterback from Union, South Carolina accumulated 340 yards of total offense with five passing touchdowns in a 58-42 loss to Brevard last week. Thompson completed 24 passes for 314 yards with no interceptions. He also carried the ball five times for 26 yards. Also Nominated: Denarius Hilton, Averett; Dre Davis, Ferrum.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Bradley Jefferson, Averett 
- The Tignall, Georgia junior defensive back grabbed an interception and a fumble in a 12-7 victory over USA South rival Maryville last week. Jefferson's interception came in the second quarter, was returned 13 yards and setup an eventual Cougar field goal. Additionally, he made four total tackles and broke up two passes including one on a fourth down in the final minutes of the game. Also Nominated: Antonio Johnson, N.C. Wesleyan; James Pegues, Greensboro.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Keyon Washington, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman defensive back from Jacksonville, Florida totaled seven total tackles in a 58-42 loss to Brevard last week. Washington tallied five solo tackles and two assisted take downs. Also Nominated: JaVon Lofton, Averett.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Cole Westberry, Averett - The sophomore place kicker and punter from Youngsville, North Carolina accounted for all of Averett's 12 points in a 12-7 victory over USA South foe Maryville last week. Westberry was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts hitting from 47, 22, 35, and 19 yards. He also averaged 40.4 yards per punt with two landing inside the 20 yard line. Also Nominated: Chase Young, Huntingdon.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Sheriff Secka, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior midfielder from Olney, Maryland scored the lone goal of the match in a 1-0 victory over USA South rival Methodist in the team's only regular season action last week. Secka's 57th minute goal helped secure the USA South East Division Regular Season title for the Bishops. Also Nominated: Tobias Andreasson, Averett; Cody VanKerschaever, Maryville; Ethan Pettit, Covenant.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Williams, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman goalkeeper from Manassas, Virginia notched a shutout in a 1-0 victory over USA South rival Methodist in the team's only regular season action last week. Williams stopped both shots he faced to secure the USA South East Division Regular Season title for the Bishops. Also Nominated: Austin Bramhall, Averett; Nate Long, Maryville.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Jake Major, Covenant - The freshman forward from Dacula, Georgia tallied his first two career goals the Scots posted a 9-0 victory over USA South foe Berea in the team's only regular season action last week. Also Nominated: Milan Card, Maryville; Asher Francis, Averett.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Hannah Shields, Averett - The senior outside hitter from Keeling, Virginia averaged 3.67 kills, with a .343 hitting percentage, and 1.89 digs per set as the Cougars posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition to secure the USA South Regular Season East Division title. In a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Shields tallied ten kills and four digs. In a 3-0 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Shields posted 12 kills, five digs, two service aces, one assist and one block. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Pfeiffer, Shields totaled 11 kills, eight digs, one service ace and one assist. Also Nominated: Lindsay Alford, William Peace; Hannah Blaylock, Meredith; Schuyler Moore, Covenant; Samantha Morton, N.C. Wesleyan; Brianne Sidner, Maryville; Amy Tyma, Huntingdon.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Carson Williams, William Peace - The senior defensive specialist from Beulaville, North Carolina averaged 5.64 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-1 victory over Meredith, Williams tallied 22 digs, four assists and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Mary Baldwin, Williams posted 11 digs, three assists and two service aces. Finally, in a 3-1 win over Salem, Williams notched 29 digs, one assist and one service ace. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Flickinger, Maryville; Emily Moore, Covenant; Bria Rochelle, Huntingdon; Emily Stanley, Averett.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Rhianna Tyldesley, Maryville - The freshman outside hitter from Trussville, Alabama averaged 3.27 kills per set as the Scots posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Oglethorpe, Tyldesley tallied 16 kills, two digs and two blocks. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Huntingdon, Tyldesley notched seven kills, two blocks, one assists and one dig. Finally, in a 3-2 victory over Piedmont, Tyldesley totaled 13 kills and four digs. Also Nominated: Callie Cline, N.C. Wesleyan; McKenzie Miller, Averett; Amy Tyma, Huntingdon.
