USA South Athletes of the Week - Dec. 18, 2017

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Jackson Whitley, Methodist - The senior forward from Greensboro, North Carolina averaged a double-double of 22.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as the Monarchs posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South members. He also added 2.5 assists, 2.5 blocks and 1.0 steals per game last week. In an 85-79 win over Piedmont, Whitley totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and one steal. In a 90-82 victory over Brevard, Whitley notched a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds to go with five assists, two steals and one block. Also Nominated: Emier Bowman, Maryville; Torell Carter, Berea; James Contreras Jr., Averett; Josh Dudley, Ferrum; T.C. Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Torell Carter, Berea - The freshman guard from Whitesburg, Kentucky averaged 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game as the Mountaineers posted a 0-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 97-90 loss to LaGrange, Carter notched a double-double with a career-high 38 points along with 11 rebounds. He also added three assists and two steals. In a 71-67 loss to Huntingdon, Carter totaled five points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Zarkia Mattox, Ferrum - The Rocky Mount, Virginia senior guard averaged 27.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game as the Panthers posted an 0-2 record last week in two non-Conference contests versus USA South members. In a 60-51 loss at Maryville, Mattox totaled 30 points, nine rebounds, six steals, one assist and one block. In a 68-59 loss to Piedmont, Mattox notched a double-double of 25 points and ten rebounds with five steals and two assists. Also Nominated: Samm Chandler, Averett; Mikayla Ray, William Peace; Juliette Harp, Huntingdon; Madison Maples, Maryville; KeChae Parker, N.C. Wesleyan; Amari Price, Piedmont.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Javana Jones, N.C. Wesleyan - The Gaithersburg, Maryland freshman guard averaged 7.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game as the Bishops posted a 2-0 record last week. In a 62-60 win over Shenandoah, Jones totaled four points, six rebounds, one assist and one block. In a 75-65 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Jones posted 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Also Nominated: Brianna Parmelee, Averett; Elsa Eckenrod, Maryville; Queen Scott, Piedmont.
