USA South Athletes of the Week - March 19, 2018

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
James Poropatic, LaGrange - The senior outfielder from Sharpsburg, Georgia went a combined 7-for-15 (.467) with a .529 on-base percentage and a .867 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, four RBI, one double, one triple, one home run, two walks and one stolen base as the Panthers notched a 3-1 record last week. In a 2-1 win over Stevens Institute, Poropatic was held without a hit. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Nate Gardner, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Hertford, North Carolina earned a complete-game shutout win over USA South foe William Peace in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Battling Bishops. In the 4-0 victory, Gardner allowed five hits with one walk and a career-high 15 strikeouts. Also Nominated: Tyler Brown, Methodist; Zach English, LaGrange; Jacob Holland, Ferrum; Carden Mellown, Huntingdon; Matt Reitz, Covenant; Anthony Rodriguez, Maryville; Matt Tuggle, Averett.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Jack Layrisson, LaGrange - The freshman infielder from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida went a combined 8-for-16 (.500) with a .529 on-base percentage and a .750 slugging percentage to go along with two runs scored, two RBI, two triples, one walk and one stolen base as the Panthers notched a 3-1 record last week. In a 2-1 win over Stevens Institute, Layrisson was 1-for-3 with one run scored. In capturing two out of three games versus nationally-ranked USA South foe Maryville, Layrisson was a combined 7-for-13 with one run scored, two RBI, two triples, one walk and one stolen base. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Ben Kimberlin, Averett - The freshman from Manassas, Virginia earned a no-decision in an 8-5 loss to nationally-ranked Christopher Newport in his only appearance on the mound last week for the Cougars. Kimberlin came on in relief to stop the bleeding, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and one strikeout over 5.2 innings. Also Nominated: Gibson Bittner, LaGrange; Luke Bryant, Ferrum; Will Walker, Methodist.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Kaitlyn Checkan, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior outfielder from Cary, North Carolina went a combined 7-for-11 (.636) with an .826 on-base percentage and a 1.273 slugging percentage to go along with ten runs scored, five RBI, one double, two home runs, 11 walks and one stolen base as the Battling Bishops notched a 5-1 record last week. In a doubleheader split with Guilford, Checkan was a combined 2-for-3 with one run scored, one run batted in, one double and five walks. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South rival Ferrum, Checkan was a combined 3-for-6 with four runs scored, three RBI, two home runs, two walks and one stolen base. Nicole Blackburn, Maryville - The junior from Knoxville, Tennessee earned a 2-0 record with two complete game shutouts in the circle for the Scots. In 12.0 innings pitched, Blackburn allowed 13 hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Her victories came over USA South foes LaGrange and Covenant. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett; Cheyanne Cox, Greensboro; Melissa Eckman, Piedmont; Taylor Jackson, Meredith; Lindsey Selph, Huntingdon.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Taylor Campbell, Maryville - The freshman infielder from Afton, Tennessee went a combined 12-for-20 (.600) with a .591 on-base percentage and a 1.200 slugging percentage to go along with seven runs scored, eight RBI, six doubles, two home runs and one walk as the Scots posted a 6-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of LaGrange, Campbell was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two RBI and one double. In a doubleheader sweep of Covenant, Campbell was a combined 5-for-8 with two runs scored, three RBI, three doubles and one home run. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of Berea, Campbell was a combined 4-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBI, one double, one home run and one walk. Also Nominated: Jada Allmon, Covenant; Makenzie Collins, Averett; Kristina Mojica, William Peace; Madison Perryman, Huntingdon; TK Sauls, Piedmont; Addison York, Salem.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Katlyn Smith, Maryville - The freshman from Loganville, Georgia earned a a 2-0 record with two complete game shutouts in the circle for the Scots. In 12.0 innings pitched, Smith allowed eight hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Her victories came over USA South foes LaGrange and Covenant. Also Nominated: Beth Braswell, N.C. MEN'S LACROSSE

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Chris Hadlow, Piedmont - The Roswell, Georgia sophomore attack totaled six goals and four assists to go along with eight ground balls in a 2-1 week for the Lions. In an 8-5 loss to Brevard, Hadlow collected two ground balls. In an 18-3 victory over Dallas, Hadlow notched four goals, three assists and one ground ball. Finally, in a 21-2 victory over USA South foe Averett, Hadlow scored twice with one assist and five ground balls. Also Nominated: Bryce Coates, Huntingdon; Anthony Florian, William Peace; Andrew Klementz, Greensboro; Joonas Mattila, Averett.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Zach Czulada, Piedmont - The Boca Raton, Florida sophomore goalkeeper had a 2-1 record last week for the Lions. In a total of 110:36 played, Czulada allowed 4.88 goals per game while stopping 17 shots. In an 8-5 loss to Brevard, Czulada collected 14 saves. In an 18-3 victory over Dallas, Czulada played just the first half, allowed one goal and grabbed two saves. Finally, in a 21-2 victory over USA South foe Averett, Czulada totaled 21 minutes played without allowing a goal and stopping the lone shot he faced. Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Bryce Coates, Huntingdon - The San Diego, California freshman attack scored the game-winning goal in a 5-4, double-overtime, victory over USA South rival Greensboro in the team's only action last week. He also grabbed two ground balls in the win. Also Nominated: Dalton Albright, William Peace; Chase Goff, Piedmont; Joonas Mattila, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Holly Hite, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina junior midfielder scored six goals with three assists, 19 draw controls, six caused turnovers and four ground balls as the Avenging Angels posted a 2-0 record versus USA South competition last week. In a 21-5 win over Methodist, Hite scored four times with two assists, 11 draw controls, three caused turnovers and one ground ball. In a 22-3 victory over Piedmont, Hite totaled two goals, one assist, eight draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Alixis Roccia, Averett; Caitlin O'Brien, Piedmont.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Arbes, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina junior midfielder helped the Avenging Angels' defense allow just eight goals in a 2-0 week versus USA South competition. She contributed a total of one goal, seven ground balls, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers in victories over Methodist and Piedmont. Also Nominated: Sarah Ewin, Methodist; Cassidy Heflin, Piedmont; Breanne Sawall, Averett.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Lilia Cruz, Meredith - The Great Mills, Maryland freshman attacker scored eight goals with seven assists and five ground balls as the Avenging Angels posted a 2-0 record versus USA South competition last week. In a 21-5 win over Methodist, Cruz scored five times with four assists and two ground balls. In a 22-3 victory over Piedmont, Cruz totaled three goals, three assists and three ground balls. Also Nominated: Macey Higgins, Piedmont; Alexis Roccia, Averett.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Sebastian Sikh, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior from Eskilstuna, Sweden earned a 3-0 record at both the number-one singles and number-three doubles positions last week for the Battling Bishops versus USA South competition. The singles victories came over opponents from Methodist, Greensboro and Averett. In doubles, Sikh teamed with David Change to earn the three wins. Also Nominated: Nathan Metzger, Piedmont; Matthew Harvie, Covenant.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Roberto Puig, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Malaga, Spain earned a 4-0 record at various singles spots and a 3-0 mark at the top doubles position last week for the Battling Bishops versus USA South competition. The singles victories were at the number-two and four positions versus Greensboro and the fifth spot versus Methodist and Averett. In doubles, Puig teamed with Ioannis Brokakis for the wins. Also Nominated: Dillian Betancourt, William Peace; Samuel Niebanck, Piedmont; Hayden Wilfong, Methodist; Thomas Woodcock, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Morgan Scott, Ferrum - The junior from Bassett, Virginia earned a 4-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles spots last week for the Panthers. The singles victories came over opponents from Hollins and Guilford as well as USA South foes Greensboro and William Peace. In doubles, Scott teamed with Alexandria Dixon for three of the wins and Alexandria White for one victory. Also Nominated: Morgan Buchholz, Piedmont; Anastasia Dunn, Maryville; Annie DeLuca, Covenant; Davi Barbour, Methodist; Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett; Carmen Wilkins, Salem; Josie Waddell, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Giulia Zanetti, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Verona, Italy earned a 4-0 record at both the number-three singles and doubles positions last week for the Battling Bishops versusu USA South members. The singles victories came over opposition from Greensboro, Averett, Methodist and Meredith. In doubles, Zanetti teamed with Nicole Halabi for the wins. Also Nominated: Caroline Connelly, Piedmont; Anastasia Dunn, Maryville; Lauren Holman, Salem; Laura Brown, Methodist; Eleanor Crane, Averett; Abigail Williams, Salem; Lucy Burch, Huntingdon.
