(DANVILLE, VA) - The USA South Athletic Conference presented its "Cans Across the Conference" trophy and "Pennies for a Purpose" plaque to Averett University at its football game versus Hampden-Sydney on Sunday, September 2. USA South Commissioner Tom Hart was on-hand to present the award to Averett Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members.
The holidays are a time to give thanks and appreciate the blessings in one's life. The members of the USA South Athletic Conference SAAC realized that not everyone is as fortunate as they are and wanted to do something to help make it a happier holiday in their communities, thus Cans Across the Conference was initiated in 2004. With a grand total of 17,300 items, Averett was the champion in 2017. The Cougars became the first institution to win the competition three consecutive years. As a whole, USA South members donated 52,456 items.
In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South SAAC developed "Pennies for a Purpose" in 2008. Institutions are encouraged to collect loose change which is later donated to an organization of their choosing. As a whole, USA South institutions collected a record $20,204.93 during last year's campaign! Averett earned the "Pennies for a Purpose" Plaque for the fourth consecutive year after collecting a competition-record $5,221.94 last spring.
