USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 8, 2018


Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Wright, Averett - The junior quarterback from Tallahassee, Florida accumulated 238 yards of total offense with four passing touchdowns in a 38-14 win over USA South foe LaGrange. Wright was 16-of-25 for 185 yards which produced a 179.0 passing efficiency rating. On the ground, Wright carried the ball 12 times for 53 yards. Also Nominated: Elijah Chenier, Maryville; Tyler Gregory, Brevard; Vontre Howard, Methodist; Adrian Minondo, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Dalton Cole, Brevard - The freshman quarterback from Hendersonville, North Carolina passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in a 41-36 victory over USA South foe  Methodist. Through the air, Cole was 21-of-33 for 292 yards while his one-yard score on the ground gave the Tornados a lead they would not relinquish. Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Antonio Johnson, N.C. Wesleyan
 - The Beaufort, North Carolina junior linebacker totaled three solo tackles, one of which was for a loss of three yards, one forced fumble, one pass breakup and one interception return for a touchdown in a 38-0 victory over USA South foe Greensboro. His forced fumble came on the defense's fourth play and led to a Bishop touchdown three plays later. Johnson raced 45 yards for his touchdown which ended up closing out out the game's scoring. Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Joseph Ledbetter, Averett - The Sanford, North Carolina freshman defensive lineman totaled seven tackles, including 2.5 for a loss of seven yards, in a 38-14 win over USA South rival LaGrange. Ledbetter tallied four solo tackles and three assisted take downs. Also Nominated: Julian Cupo, Methodist; Dillian Daniels, Maryville; JeQwan George, Brevard.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Trevon Charles, Brevard - The sophomore defensive back from Miami, Florida averaged 53.5 yards per kickoff return in a 41-36 victory over USA South foe Methodist. Charles' long return of 84 yards setup the Tornados on the Monarch one-yard line and led to an easy touchdown. Additionally, he blocked a Methodist punt which was recovered by Brevard in the endzone for a touchdown. Also Nominated: Bradley Jefferson, Averett; Tanner Kotowoske, Maryville.



Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Jordy Briceno, Greensboro - The sophomore forward from Cali, Colombia scored three goals in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In a 3-1 win over Piedmont International, Briceno notched the first goal of the match in the 28th minute. In a 5-2 victory over USA South foe Berea, Briceno scored to put the Pride up 2-1 and again to finalize the scoring. Also Nominated: Sean Dunbar, Averett; Cameron Earls, Piedmont; Chris Fernandez, Maryville; Parker Owen, Covenant; Ivan Ponce, William Peace; Garrett Shan, Methodist; Enrique Vargas, Pfeiffer.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Blayton Duncan, Piedmont - The freshman goalkeeper from Moultrie, Georgia posted a 1-0-2 record last week for the Lions. In 265 minutes in goal, Duncan made a total of 13 saves and allowed two goals. In a 5-0 win over Toccoa Falls, Duncan played just the first half and did not face a shot on goal. In a 2-2 tie with USA South foe Methodist, Duncan stopped seven out of nine shots. Finally, in a scoreless draw with USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Duncan stopped all six shots he faced. Also Nominated: David Chavarria, Pfeiffer; Sean Dunbar, Averett; Ryan Jorgensen, Maryville; Scott Wright, Averett.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Aazah Daniel, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman midfielder from Castries, St. Lucia scored three goals and added an assist in a 1-0-1 week for the Battling Bishops versus the two teams currently atop the USA South West Division standings. In a 5-1 win over Covenant, Daniel notched his first career hat trick with three goals, including an assist on the eventual game-winning goal. In a scoreless tie with Piedmont, Daniel was held without a shot. Also Nominated: Bralen Clouse, Maryville; Blayton Duncan, Piedmont; Johnny Kummander, Averett; Jude McEvoy, LaGrange; Ivan Ponce, William Peace; Enrique Vargas, Pfeiffer.



Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Alexis Chase, Greensboro - The Wendell, North Carolina sophomore forward tallied four goals and two assists in a 3-0 week for the Pride. In an 8-0 win over Piedmont International, Chase was notched two goals along with an assist on the eventual game-winning goal. In a 2-1 win over USA South foe Pfeiffer, Chase was held scoreless with one shot. Finally, in a 4-2 victory over USA South rival Methodist, Chase scored twice and assisted on the eventual game-winning goal. Also Nominated: Haley Bowles, Methodist; Madeline Capel, Pfeiffer; Meredith Harrison, Huntingdon; Sarah Weber, Piedmont; Maggie Wilson, Maryville.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Bailee Brown, Averett - The Salem, Virginia senior goalkeeper posted two shutouts in a 2-0 week versus USA South competition. In 180 minutes in goal, Brown stopped all 25 shots she faced. In a 2-0 win over Salem, Brown made 16 saves while in a 1-0 victory over Meredith, Brown made nine stops.Also Nominated: Keeley Catarineau, Greensboro; Kaley Hyatt, Pfeiffer; Kylie Kersh, Huntingdon; Alyssa Kral, Maryville; Miranda McNalley, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Adriana Perez, Averett - The Woodbridge, Virginia freshman forward scored both game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for the Cougars versus USA South competition last week. In a 2-0 win over Salem, Perez scored the match's first tally in the 29th minute. In a 1-0 victory over Meredith, Perez's goal with just under seven minutes remaining proved to be the clincher. Also Nominated: Kailey Burrell, Covenant; Sam Curtis, Huntingdon; Sydney Moss, Greensboro; Mackenzie Pruitt, Pfeiffer; Zoe Van Hook, Maryville; Amanda Weinhart, Piedmont.



Volleyball Player of the Week
Jazzlyn Kenner, LaGrange - The junior middle blocker from Marietta, Georgia averaged 3.77 kills, with a .337 hitting percentage, and 1.54 blocks per set as the Panthers posted a 2-1 record versus USA South competition. In a 3-2 loss to Huntingdon, Kenner posted 17 kills, nine blocks, one dig and one service ace. In a 3-1 victory over Berea, Kenner notched 18 kills, six blocks and four digs. Finally, in a 3-1 win over Agnes Scott, Kenner totaled 14 kills, six digs, five blocks and one assist. Also Nominated: Brooke Aaron, Averett; Callie Cline, N.C. Emma Gray Beacham, Pfeiffer - The sophomore libero from Laurinburg, North Carolina averaged 5.90 digs per set as the Falcons posted a 2-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 loss to Salem, Beacham posted 17 digs with five assists and two service aces. In a 3-0 victory over Mary Baldwin, Beacham tallied 21 digs, two assists and two service aces. Finally, in a 3-1 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Beacham totaled 21 digs, three service aces and two assists. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Alonna Clouse, Pfeiffer - The freshman outside hitter from Harrisburg, North Carolina averaged 3.60 kills and 3.80 digs per set as the Falcons posted a 2-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 loss to Salem, Clouse posted 12 digs with nine digs. In a 3-0 victory over Mary Baldwin, Clouse tallied seven kills, nine digs and seven service aces. Finally, in a 3-1 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Clouse notched a double-double of 17 kills and 20 digs to go along with one service ace and one block. Also Nominated: Meredith Bonee, Maryville; Avery Bowman, Meredith; Erica East, Methodist; Ashley Murphy, Huntingdon; Sarah Shropshire, Averett; Jasmine Smith, William Peace.
