USA South Athletes of the Week - Feb. 25, 2019

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Jessica Costero, Agnes Scott - The senior outfielder from Miami, Florida went a combined 4-for-5 (.800) with an .800 on-base percentage and an .800 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored and one run batted in as the Scotties swept a doubleheader from Sewanee last week. In game-two, Costero scored Agnes Scott's first and fourth runs of the game and knocked in the team's third. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett; Ashley Benge, Methodist; Makenzie Pennell, Pfeiffer; McKenzie Ridgway, Huntingdon.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Madison Hunt, Huntingdon - The Crossville, Alabama junior earned two victories in three appearances, two starts, last week for the Hawks. Hunt tossed a total of 18.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on 18 hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts. In a 6-0 win over Dallas, Hunt tossed a complete-game shutout allowing five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. In a 3-1 victory over Mt. St. Joseph, Hunt earned a complete-game win by allowing one unearned run on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett; Lindsey Champion, Methodist; Reece Davis, Pfeiffer; Savannah Jones, Brevard.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Caiti Mickles, Pfeiffer - The freshman first baseman from Booneville, North Carolina got a single in both of her plate appearances with produced four RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base as the Falcons earned a doubleheader sweep of Livingstone last week. Also Nominated: Blythe Best, Methodist; Michaela Dailey, Agnes Scott; Annie Nolan, Huntingdon; Hannah Thompson, Averett.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Hannah Thompson, Averett - The freshman from Pelham, North Carolina earned a victory in her only appearance in the circle last week for the Cougars, a 4-1 victory over Bluefield. She tossed the first 4.0 innings and allowed no runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Brittany Jones, Methodist; Savannah Jones, Brevard; Emerson Puzey, Pfeiffer; Kayla Spinks, Agnes Scott.

 

MEN'S LACROSSE

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Brady Jenks, Piedmont - The Peachtree, Georgia junior attack tallied four goals, including the eventual game-winner, with one assist in the team's only contest of last week, a 12-9 win over Johnson & Wales (RI). Also Nominated: John Allen, Pfeiffer; Adrian Harper, Huntingdon; Lucas Jayne, Averett; Michael Kiley, Greensboro; Walker Rice, William Peace.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sam Hitt, Huntingdon - The Finksburg, Maryland senior midfielder was 17-of-20 (.850) in faceoffs, grabbed 14 ground balls and scored two goals as the Hawks defeated Hendrix, 11-6, in the team's only contest last week. Also Nominated: Marques Fleming, Averett; Da'Von Knight, William Peace; Andrew Mayefskie, Methodist; Peyton Mooney, Brevard.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Michael Kiley, Greensboro - The Taneytown, Maryland freshman attack scored six goals and added one assist in the team's only contest last week, a 16-5 win over Montreat. Kiley also added five caused turnovers and four ground balls in the victory. Also Nominated: Sam Garrett, Averett; Matt Pemberton, Methodist; Brewer Warlick, William Peace; Jacob Wittenberg, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Lilia Cruz, Meredith - The Great Mills, Maryland sophomore attack has accumulated 20 points on 14 goals and six assists to go along with three ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover to begin the season for the 2-0 Avenging Angels. In a 20-14 win over Christopher Newport, Cruz scored nine times with three assists, two ground balls, one draw control and one caused turnover. In a 20-6 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Cruz totaled five goals, three assists, one ground ball and one draw control. Also Nominated: Elizabeth Peasley, Averett; Monti Hendrix, Methodist; Rowan Bumpass, Piedmont; Micaiah Vacchiano, Brevard; Kaylee Andrews, Huntingdon.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Arbes, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina senior midfielder has accumulated 12 draw controls, eight caused turnovers and seven ground balls to begin the season for the 2-0 Avenging Angels. In a 20-14 win over Christopher Newport, Arbes tallied seven draw controls, five ground balls and a team-high three caused turnovers. In a 20-6 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Arbes totaled a team-high five caused turnovers with five draw controls and three ground balls. Also Nominated: Katherine Collins, Brevard; Mattie Keaton, Piedmont; Mary Ellen Kelliher, Methodist; Adriana Perez, Averett; Alex Teague, Huntingdon; Collette Vladmimery, Salem.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Hannah Scharf, Brevard - The Southport, North Carolina freshman midfielder as accumulated seven points on five goals and two assists to go along with 11 draw controls, nine caused turnovers and seven ground balls as the Tornados have opened the season with a 3-0 record. In a 14-5 victory over Brenau, Scharf scored twice with one assist, four grand balls, four draw controls and four assists. In an 18-1 win over Montreat, Scharf totaled two goals, one assist, four caused turnovers and two draw controls. Finally, in a 6-4 victory over Randolph, Scharf tallied one goal, five draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Courtney DeLone, Averett; Lily Eisenhart, Methodist; Maya Flake, Meredith; Teia Horton, Salem; Savannah Ryan, Huntingdon; Madison Voshall, Piedmont.
