USA South Athletes of the Week - Mar. 11, 2019

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Trey Pearce, LaGrange - The junior infielder from Tallahassee, Florida went a combined 7-for-12 (.583) with a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, two home runs and four walks as the Panthers posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 7-4 win over Roanoke, Pearce was 1-for-3 with one run batted in and one walk. In taking two out of three games from nationally-ranked USA South foe Huntingdon, Pearce was a combined 6-for-9 with three runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, two home runs and three walks. Also Nominated: Tyler Burdette, Piedmont; Chaston Gordon, Pfeiffer; Heath Haskins, Huntingdon; Alex Kachler, Methodist; Peyton Sawyer, Maryville; Brandon Wheat, N.C. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Samuel Joiner, Maryville - The senior from Sandersville, Georgia earned two saves and one win in three appearances on the mound last week for the Scots. He tossed 4.0 scoreless and hitless innings, allowing two walks with five strikeouts. In a doubleheader sweep of Whittenberg, Joiner saved both games by getting a total of four outs and allowing just one walk with three strikeouts. In a 3-2 win over USA South foe Brevard in 11 innings, Joiner tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing one walk with two stikeouts to grab the victory. Baseball Rookie of the Week
Joe Ruth, LaGrange - The freshman infielder from Chiefland, Florida went a combined 8-for-16 (.500) with a .571 on-base percentage and a .625 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles and three walks as the Panthers posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 7-4 win over Roanoke, Ruth was 1-for-3 with one run scored two RBI and one walk. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Tucker Duke, Huntingdon - The freshman from Pulaski, Tennessee picked up two wins in two relief appearances last week for the Hawks. Duke tossed 7.0 total innings, allowing one run on one hit with five walks and ten strikeouts. In a 5-4 win over Rhodes, Duke threw 2.0 innings and allowed one run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout. In a 5-4 victory over USA South rival LaGrange, Duke entered in the fifth inning with the Hawks down by four runs and proceeded to pitch five scoreless innings of no-hit baseball, allowing two walks with nine strikeouts. Also Nominated: Ricky Cameron, Methodist; Collin Clark, Averett; Bryce Marsh, Pfeiffer.

Softball Player of the Week
Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett - The junior infielder from Alton, Virginia went a combined 6-for-11 (.545) with a .688 on-base percentage and a 1.182 slugging percentage to go along with five runs scored, three RBI, one double, two home runs, five walks and two stolen bases in a 2-2 week for the Cougars. In a doubleheader split with a Lynchburg team who is receiving votes in the NFCA National Top-25, Aherron was a combined 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI, one double, one home run two walks and one stolen base. In a doubleheader split with Emory & Henry, Aherron was a combined 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one run batted in, one home run, three walks and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Amanda Dacunto, Salem; Beth Braswell, N.C. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Katlyn Smith, Maryville - The Loganville, Georgia sophomore earned two victories in two complete-game starts last week for the Scots in the circle. Smith tossed a total of 14.0 innings, allowing two runs on ten hits with three walks and 18 strikeouts. In a 3-1 win over seventh-ranked Berry, Smith allowed just one run on three hits with three walks and 14 strikeouts. In a 2-1 victory over Emory, Smith allowed just one run on seven hits with zero walks and four strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett; Kory Best, Piedmont; Cheyanne Cox, Greensboro; Shelby Godwin, N.C. Erin Rankin, Averett - The freshman outfielder from San Bernardino, California went a combined 4-for-7 (.571) with a .625 on-base percentage and a 1.143 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, three RBI, one double, her first career home run and one walk in a 2-2 week for the Cougars. All her action came in a doubleheader split against a Lynchburg team who is receiving votes in the NFCA National Top-25. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Lindsay Simmons, Mary Baldwin - The freshman from Mount Sidney, Virginia earned a save in two appearances last week for the Fighting Squirrels in the circle. Simmons tossed a total of 4.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits with zero walks and four strikeouts as Mary Baldwin split a doubleheader against Randolph. Simmons' save came in game one as she pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kaity Sullivan, Averett; Lauren Kierpa, Covenant.

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Connor Glenn, Methodist - The Alamo Heights, Texas junior attack scored seven goals with three ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs. In a 12-7 win over St. Vincent, Glenn totaled two goals and one ground ball. In a 14-6 victory over Oglethorpe, Glenn scored five goals with two ground balls. Also Nominated: Bryce Coates, Huntingdon; Jackson McKaig, Brevard; Parker Corbett, Averett; Nick Falso, William Peace; Jared Nelson, Pfeiffer.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sam Hitt, Huntingdon - The Finksburg, Maryland senior midfielder was 52-of-61 (.852) in faceoffs, grabbed 45 ground balls and scored four goals as the Hawks posted a 2-1 record last week. In a 7-6 win over Wabash, Hitt was 14-of-17 in faceoffs with 14 ground balls and one goal. In a 14-9 loss to Carthage, Hitt was 22-of-27 in faceoffs with 18 ground balls and two goals. Finally, in a 13-0 win over USA South foe Averett, Hitt was 16-of-17 in faceoffs with 13 ground balls and one goal. Also Nominated: Zach Czulada, Piedmont; Andrew Mayefskie, Methodist; Peyton Mooney, Brevard; Jacob Shriver, Averett; Spencer Stokes, Pfeiffer.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Mark Chatt, Methodist - The Matthews, North Carolina freshman attack tallied six points on one goal and five assists to go along with six ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs. In a 12-7 win over St. Vincent, Chatt scored one goal with four ground balls. In a 14-6 victory over Oglethorpe, Chatt assisted on five goals with two ground balls. Also Nominated: Chris Alcorn, Pfeiffer; Parker Corbett, Averett; Brayden Puckett, Huntingdon.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Meagan Bourque, Pfeiffer - The Seabrook, Texas junior attacker scored ten goals and assisted on three scores to go along with eight draw controls, seven ground balls and one caused turnover in a 2-0 week for the Falcons against USA South opposition. In a 16-4 win over Brevard, Bourque scored five goals with four ground balls and one draw control. In a 13-10 victory over Piedmont, Bourque notched five goals with three assists, seven draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Ali Cucinotta, N.C. Wesleyan; Emma Fransen, Piedmont; Jezika Gunter, Brevard; Holly Hite, Meredith; Kaelyn Holland, Methodist; Alixis Roccia, Averett; Rylie Toomey, William Peace.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Arbes, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina senior midfielder collected a total of 18 draw controls, 12 ground balls and nine caused turnovers as the Avenging Angels posted a 4-1 record last week. She also added two goals and two assists in the two wins. In four wins over USA South opposition, Arbes totaled 13 draw controls, seven ground balls and six caused turnovers with two goals and two assists. In a 21-10 loss to 17th-ranked Catholic, Arbes contributed five ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Sam Hanlon, Pfeiffer; Sada Hollowell, Greensboro; Mattie Keaton, Piedmont; Hannah Ostlund, Salem; Breanne Sawall, Averett; Shania Springer, William Peace; Micaiah Vacchiano, Brevard.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Allison Schaper, William Peace - The Forest Grove, Oregon freshman midfielder scored 11 goals with four assists to go along with 12 ground balls, ten draw controls and six caused turnovers as the Pacers posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 21-7 win over Huntingdon, Schaper scored six goals with seven ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers. In a 23-2 victory over LaGrange, Schaper accumulated five goals and four assists with six draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Nicolas Yanes, Averett - The junior from Neuquen, Argentina earned 2-0 singles and doubles records at the number-one spots last week for the Cougars. Yanes collected singles victories over opponents from Division II Lees-McRae as well as Virginia Wesleyan. In doubles, Yanes teamed with Patrick Shields to earn the two wins. Also Nominated: Jacob Oehser, Methodist; Kyle Kelley, LaGrange; Andrew Chitty, Piedmont; Dylan Betancourt, William Peace; Tom Mittring , Brevard.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
E.J. Stolmeijer, Methodist - The freshman from Meridian, Idaho earned a 3-0 singles record and a 1-1 mark at the top doubles spot last week for the Monarchs. The victories in singles came at the number-one and number-six spots over opponents from St. John Fisher, Warner and Wilkes. In doubles, he teamed with Harrison Bitzberger to gain a win over St. John Fisher. Also Nominated: Tyler Frazee, Brevard; Daniel Assumpcao, LaGrange; Chris Morton, Covenant; Patrick Shiends, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Ashton Walker, Methodist - The senior from Pikeville, North Carolina earned a 4-0 singles and a 2-1 doubles records, all at the number-one spots, last week for the Monarchs. The victories in singles came over opponents from Albion, St. John Fisher, Eastern Nazarene and Wilkes. In doubles, she teamed with Abby Caddick to defeat Eastern Nazarene and Defiance. Also Nominated: Jenna Eppes, LaGrange; Maggie Moody, Piedmont; Darby Sherrill, Pfeiffer; Josie Waddell, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Samantha Lowry, Piedmont - The freshman from Dacula, Georgia earned a 5-0 singles record last week as the Lions. Her victories came at the number-five and number-six spots over opponents from Carthage, Regis, Belhaven, Mary and Transylvania. Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Cortez Sawyer, William Peace - The freshman from Zion, Illinois competed at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational last week in four events. He ran the 100 meters in 11.18, the 200 meters in 22.42, the 400 meters in 51.18 and was a member of the 4x100 meter team who ran a 42.77. Also Nominated: Jonathan George, Covenant; Brandon Leftwich, Piedmont.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Anthony Jordan, Piedmont - The freshman from Adel, Georgia has competed at the Berry College Icebreaker Duals and the Southern Invitational to open up the outdoor season. At the Berry College Icebreaker Duals, Jordan placed sixth out of 20 competitors in the long jump with a 6.34 meter effort. He then placed sixth out of eight in the triple jump with a 12.30 meter mark. At the Southern Invitational, Jordan was a part of the 4x100 meter relay team which finished second in a time of 42.42 and set a new program record. Also Nominated: Michael Rawlings, Covenant; Quinten Jackson, William Peace.

Men's Track Rookie of the Week

Lilly Smith, CovenantThe senior from Weaverville, North Carolina competed at the Berry College Icebreaker Duals in three events. In the 800 meters, Smith placed fourth out of 38 in a time of 2:23.43. In the 1,500 meters, Smith placed third out of 44 in a time of 4:50.79. Finally, in the 4x400 meter relay, Smith helped the Scots to an 11th place finish out of 20 with a time of 4:30.22. Also Nominated: Essence Thomas, Meredith; Anteca Hill, Piedmont; Marketta Bennett, William Peace.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Cameron Granger, Piedmont - The sophomore from Lake Charles, Louisiana has competed at the Berry College Icebreaker Duals and the Southern Invitational to open up the outdoor season. At the Berry College Icebreaker Duals, Granger placed first out of 21 in the triple jump with a new school-record effort of 11.00 meters. She also placed third out of 12 in the triple jump with a 10.92 meter jump. Finally, at the Southern Invitational, Granger finished fifth out of 21 in the long jump with a 5.05 meter effort. Also Nominated: Demonica Stanley, Meredith; Alani Rouse, William Peace.

Women's Track Rookie of the Week
S.K. Lipperd, Covenant - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama competed at the Berry College Icebreaker Duals in two events. In the 800 meters, Lipperd placed third out of 38 in a time of 2:21.16. In the 4x400 meter relay, Lipperd helped the Scots to an 11th place finish out of 20 with a time of 4:30.22. Also Nominated: Anteca Hill, Piedmont; Marketta Bennett, William Peace.

Women's Field Rookie of the Week
Alani Rouse, William Peace - The freshman from Durham, North Carolina competed in the high jump at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational last week. She placed fourth out of eight with a 1.50 meter effort. Also Nominated: Perryn Morgan, Piedmont.
