USA South Athletes of the Week - Apr. 22, 2019

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
John Mitchell, Covenant - The senior outfielder from Macon, Georgia was a combined 13-for-24 (.542) with a ..586 on-base percentage, a .958 slugging percentage, nine runs scored, 10 RBI, three doubles, two triples, one home run, three walks and five stolen bases in a 4-1 week for the Scots. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Brevard, Mitchell was a combined 5-for-10 with three runs scored, four RBI, one triple and one stolen base. In an 8-6 loss to Berry, Mitchell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI, one home run and one stolen base. Finally, in a two-game sweep of USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Mitchell was a combined 6-for-10 with four runs scored, three RBI, three doubles, one triple three walks and three stolen bases. Also Nominated: Tyler Burdette, Piedmont; Trey Croom, N.C. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Tristen Luck, Methodist - The sophomore from Fayetteville, North Carolina earned two wins in two starts last week for the Monarchs versus USA South competition. He tossed a total of 13.0 innings and allowed just two runs, only one earned, on nine hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. In a 12-0, seven-inning, win over William Peace, Luck went the distance for the shutout, allowing just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts. In an 8-3 victory over Greensboro, Luck tossed the first six innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Also Nominated: David Craft, Piedmont; Brooks Freeman, Huntingdon; Jackson Heuer, Covenant; Nick Richmond, Pfeiffer; Matt Tuggle, Averett.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Hunter Christian, Covenant - The freshman infielder from Bostwick, Georgia was a combined 10-for-23 (.435) with a .480 on-base percentage, a .609 slugging percentage, seven runs scored, seven RBI, one double, one home run and one walk in a 4-1 week for the Scots. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Brevard, Christian was a combined 2-for-10 with two runs scored and one walk. In an 8-6 loss to Berry, Christian was 2-for-3 with one run scored, one run batted in and one double. Finally, in a two-game sweep of USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Christian was a combined 6-for-10 with four runs scored, six RBI and one home run. Also Nominated: Andrew Knight, Huntingdon; Andrew Nichols, N.C. Wesleyan; Nate Tuck, Averett.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Tucker Duke, Huntingdon - The freshman from Pulaski, Tennessee earned a no-decision in his only appearance on the mound for the Hawks last week an 8-3 loss to USA South foe Piedmont. Duke tossed 3.2 innings of relief and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Matthew Scavotto, Brevard.

 

MEN'S LACROSSE

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Jared Nelson, Pfeiffer - The junior attack from Vestal, New York totaled ten points on four goals and six assists in an 20-16 loss to USA South foe William Peace in the Falcons' only game last week. Nelson has now tied the single-season program record for points with 275. He also added three ground balls in the defeat. Also Nominated: Zach Barnhill, Huntingdon; Brady Jenks, Piedmont; Joonas Mattila, Averett; Jackson McKaig, Brevard; Walker Rice, William Peace. 

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Clay Stevenson, Methodist - The Milford, Deleware junior goalkeeper recorded 19 saves, a .792 save percentage, in a 6-5 win over USA South rival Piedmont, the only contest last week for the Monarchs. Stevenson also added a game-high seven ground balls in the win. Also Nominated: Zach Czulada, Piedmont; Sam Garrett, Averett; Robert Kokal, Brevard; Drew Miller, William Peace; Matt Murphy, Huntingdon.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Sam Garrett, Averett - The freshman long-stick midfielder from Poolesville, Maryland collected seven ground balls and two caused turnovers in a 15-4 loss to USA South foe Greensboro, the only contest last week for the Cougars. Garrett also registered a goal in the defeat. Also Nominated: None.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Holly Hite, Meredith - The senior midfielder from Apex, North Carolina totaled nine points on seven goals and two assists with 28 draw controls, six caused turnovers and five ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Avenging Angels. In a 23-0 win over Piedmont, Hite scored three times with ten draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. In a 26-1 win over Greensboro, Hite totaled four goals and two assists with 18 draw controls, two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Also Nominated: Hannah Mae Ayers, Averett; Gabby Bosak, Pfeiffer; Sarah Ewin, Methodist; Dana Florian, William Peace; Cassidy Heflin, Piedmont.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Arbes, Meredith - The senior midfielder from Apex, North Carolina totaled 13 draw controls, seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls to go along with one goal and two assists as the Avenging Angels posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 23-0 win over Piedmont, Arbes collected five draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers to go along with one assist. In a 26-1 win over Greensboro, Arbes totaled eight draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls to go along with one goal and one assist. Also Nominated: Lily Eisenhart, Methodist; Breanne Sawall, Averett; Collette Vladmimery, Salem.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Dana Florian, William Peace - The freshman midfielder from Raleigh, North Carolina totaled 14 points on 13 goals and one assist to go along with 15 draw controls, 12 ground balls and six caused turnovers in a 2-0 week for the Pacers versus USA South competition. In a 17-6 win over Brevard, Florian posted six goals, eight draw controls, six ground balls and two caused turnovers. In a 19-7 victory over Salem, Florian tallied seven goals, one assist, seven draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Hannah Mae Ayers, Averett; Lily Eisenhart, Methodist; Dana Florian, William Peace; Maya Flake, Meredith; Hannah Scharf, Brevard.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Hayden Wilfong, Methodist - The sophomore from Winchester, Virginia earned a 2-0 singles record and a 1-1 doubles mark last week for the Monarchs. Wilfong collected singles victories at the number three and four spots over opponents from USA South foes Averett and nationally-ranked N.C. Wesleyan. At number-three doubles, Wilfong teamed with Joshua Deutsh to gain a win over Averett. Also Nominated: Trey Wood, Covenant; Giannis Brokakis, N.C. Wesleyan; Tom Mittring, Brevard; Abdugani Ganiev, Averett; Chase Morris, Piedmont.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Jhonny Acosta, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Ita, Paraguay earned a 2-0 record last week for the Battling Bishops in a match versus USA South foe Methodist, the team's only contest of the week. The victory in singles was at the number-four position while the win in doubles came at number-two with Ingmar Remmerswaal. Also Nominated: Tyler Frazee, Brevard; Fabian Howding, Averett; Houston Medlock, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett - The senior from Oulu, Finland earned a 3-0 record at both the top singles and doubles spots last week for the Cougars. Sarkkinen collected singles wins over opponents from USA South foes Methodist, Greensboro and William Peace. In doubles, Sarkkinen teamed with Eleanor Crane to earn the three wins. Also Nominated: Allison Himes, Methodist; Fariza Abdulloeva, N.C. Wesleyan; Samantha Sepe, Brevard; Morgan Buchholz, Piedmont.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Abby Craddick, Methodist - The freshman from Warrington, Pennsylvania earned a 4-0 singles record and a 3-0 mark in doubles last week for the Monarchs. Craddick collected three singles wins at the number-five spot versus USA South foes Averett, Meredith and Salem while collected another win at number-two singles in a second match versus Meredith. In doubles, Craddick teamed with Ashton Walker at the number-two position for the three wins. Also Nominated: Fariza Abdulloeva, N.C. Wesleyan; Kristina Hedelt, Averett; Samantha Lowry, Piedmont.

 

GOLF

Golfer of the Week
Wil Manuel, Maryville - The senior from Chattanooga, Tennessee placed third out of 90 golfers at the Rhodes Spring Invitational hosted by the Windyke West Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee on April 15-16 by shooting a seven-under par 209 which tied the program record for a three-round event. In the three-round event, Manuel opened with four-under par 68's in each of his first two rounds and finished with a one-over par 73 to help the Scots sixth place team finish. Also Nominated: Nathan Hawkins & Josh Wall, Covenant; Larkin Gross, Methodist; Matthew Leemann, Piedmont; Stephen Shephard, Huntingdon. 

Golf Rookie of the Week
Zach Swink, Greensboro - The freshman from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania finished placed 36th out of 82 golfers at the Emory Invitational hosted by the Smoke Rise Country Club in Stone Mountain, Georgia last week by shooting a 13-over par 226. In the three-round event, Swink opened with a three-over par 74, followed by a four-over par 75 and finished with a six-over par 77 to help the Pride to an eighth place tie team finish. Also Nominated: Will DeMersseman, Covenant; Michael Clardy, Piedmont.
