USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 2, 2019

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Mercer Stout, Covenant - The sophomore midfielder from Signal Mountain, Tennessee tallied three goals and both game-winning scores in a 2-0 week for the Scots. In a 3-2 win over Randolph, Stout scored in the 55th minute to give Covenant a 3-0 lead. In a 6-1 victory over Southern Virginia, Stout tallied a goal in the 15th minute to give the Scots the lead for good and added an insurance score in the 48th minute. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Cameron Verona, Piedmont - The junior goalkeeper from Waleska, Georgia posted a shutout in the only contest last week for the Lions, a 1-0 win over Bob Jones. Verona stopped all five shots to help Piedmont begin the season win a victory. Also Nominated: Erik Blick, Averett; Tobias Borzel, N.C. Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Max Jr., Berea - The freshman forward from Democratic Republic of Congo tallied three goals and both game-winning scores in a 2-0 week for the Mountaineers. In a 4-0 win over Blackburn, Max Jr. scored twice including the first goal of the season. In a 2-0 victory over Warren Wilson, Max Jr. again notched the first goal of the contest. WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Bailee Vanover, Berea - The Richmond, Kentucky sophomore midfielder tallied two goals in the only game of the week for the Mountaineers, a 3-1 win over Warren Wilson. Vanover opened the scoring in the 16th minute and added an insurance goal in the 66th minute. Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Rebeccah Rojas, Brevard - The Murrieta, California junior goalkeeper posted a shutout in the only game of the week for the Tornados, a 0-0 double overtime tie with Emory & Henry. In 110 minutes in net, Rojas stopped all seven shots she faced. Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Haley Russell, Greensboro - The Suffolk, Virginia freshman midfielder tallied two goals in a 1-1 week for the Pride. In a 2-0 loss to Washington & Lee, Russell was held scoreless. In a 2-1 win over Bridgewater, Russell scored both goals including the game-winner in the 41st minute. Also Nominated: Kayla Blankenship, Pfeiffer; Erin Cembrale, Huntingdon; Victoria Cruz, Agnes Scott; Laura Harris, Methodist; Kaylee King, Piedmont; Madison Morin, Averett; Morgan Thomas, Meredith; Macy Lindsey, Maryville.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Mya Parks, William Peace - The senior outside hitter from LaGrange, North Carolina averaged 3.55 kills and 5.36 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Southern Virginia, Parks tallied a double-double of 13 kills and 25 digs with two blocks, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-1 victory over Bob Jones, Parks notched a double-double of 19 kills and 15 assists with one service ace. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Roanoke, Parks posted seven kills, 19 digs and one block. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Lauren Phillips, Meredith - The junior defensive specialist from Greenville, North Carolina averaged 6.19 digs and 1.06 assists per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Catholic, Phillips totaled 16 digs, six assists and two service aces. In a 3-2 win over Eastern Mennonite, Phillips posted 27 digs, five assists and two service aces. In a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg, Phillips contributed 38 digs and four assists. Finally, in a 3-0 loss to Bridgewater, Phillips finished with 18 digs and two assists. Also Nominated: Sydney Barnwell, N.C. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Rachel Christian, Mary Baldwin - The freshman outside hitter from Staunton, Virginia averaged 4.62 kills and 4.77 digs per set as the Fighting Squirrels posted a 1-3 record last week. In a 3-0 loss to Lynchburg, Christian tallied a double-double of 17 kills and ten kills with three blocks. In a 3-0 loss to Catholic, Christian posted a double-double of 12 kills and 19 digs with two blocks. In a 3-0 victory over Bryn Mawr, Christian totaled 11 kills, six digs, one assist and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-1 loss to Wilson, Christian notched a double-double of 20 kills and 27 digs with one assist and one block. Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Tanner Carson, Berea - The senior from McCreary, Kentucky placed first out of 73 runners at the Berea/Centre Cross Country Jamboree last week. Carson completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 15:29 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Andrew Topoly, Methodist; Brendan Yeager, Covenant; Daniel Beckett, Maryville; Connor Hayes, N.C. Wesleyan; Curtis Freeman, Pfeiffer; Chandler Lowell, Averett; Alvin Jacobs, Piedmont.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Luke Wilson, Berea - The freshman from Point Pleasant, West Virginia placed tenth out of 73 runners at the Berea/Centre Cross Country Jamboree last week. Wilson completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16:30 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Andrew Topoly, Methodist; Brendan Yeager, Covenant; Enock Ruto, N.C. Wesleyan; Chandler Lowell, Averett; Gary Halverson, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Lea Mulligan, Maryville - The junior from Chattanooga, Tennessee placed first out of 23 runners at the Covenant College Mountaintop Invitational last week. Mulligan completed the two-mile course in a time of 12:41, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Makayla Lawler, Methodist; S.K. Lipperd, Covenant; Cedara Franklin, N.C. Wesleyan; Alyson Hanlon, Pfeiffer; Sydney Fryman, Averett; Val Angel, Piedmont. 

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Lilly Simms, Maryville - The sophomore, competing in collegiate cross country for the first time, from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee placed second out of 23 runners at the Covenant College Mountaintop Invitational last week. Simms completed the two-mile course in a time of 12:56, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Courtney Drumm, Methodist; Brooke McDonald, Covenant; Julie Tonon, Meredith; Cedara Franklin, N.C. Wesleyan; Alyson Hanlon, Pfeiffer; Sydney Fryman, Averett; Addie Bolton, Piedmont.
