USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 9, 2019

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Michael Lambert, Huntingdon - The senior quarterback from Cullman, Alabama tied the program record for touchdown passes in a single game with six in a 69-43 win over Guilford last week. Lambert was 18-for-29 passing with 336 yards and no interceptions. He also carried the ball twice for 12 total yards. Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Antonio Johnson, N.C. Wesleyan
 - The Beaufort, North Carolina senior linebacker recorded 13 total tackles, 1.5 for a loss, with one sack and one interception in a 31-24, overtime, win over Emory & Henry last week. Johnson's interception ended the game as it came in overtime after the Bishops scored a touchdown on their offensive position. Also Nominated: Conner Showalter, Averett; Jeremiah Speed, Greensboro; Jordon Turner, LaGrange.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Braxton King, Greensboro - The freshman defensive back totaled six tackles, including an assisted take down for a loss, in a 23-8 defeat at the hands of Apprentice last week. King collected three solo tackles and three assisted take downs. Also Nominated: Cameron Collier, LaGrange; Billy King, Huntingdon.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Joshua Tapscott, Averett - The senior running back from Warrenton, Virginia took back momentum and the lead for the Cougars late in the first half as he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in a 28-16 win over Hampden-Sydney last week. Tapscott ended up with 117 kickoff return yards on two attempts. Also Nominated: Zac Ellison, Greensboro; Alex Rivera, LaGrange; Ke'Darius Thornton, Huntingdon.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Kelan LeBlanc, Huntingdon - The sophomore forward from Enterprise, Alabama tallied two goals and one assist in a 4-2 win over Birmingham Southern, the only contest last week for the Hawks. LeBlanc assisted on the opening goal of the match before scoring twice in the 56th, 27 seconds apart, giving the Hawks a lead they would not relinquish. The win was the first for Huntingdon over Birmingham Southern in nine tries during its time as an NCAA member. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Paul Lemay, Covenant - The senior goalkeeper from Apopka, Florida posted a 1-0-1 record last week for the Scots. In 200 minutes in goal, Lemay stopped ten of 11 shots and posted one shutout. In a 2-0 win over Berry, Lemay collected three saves while in a 1-1, double overtime, tie with Sewanee, Lemay grabbed seven saves. Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Taylor Bradley, Huntingdon - The freshman midfielder from Panama City, Florida tallied one goal and one assist in a 4-2 win over Birmingham Southern, the only contest last week for the Hawks. Bradley assisted on a goal in the 56th minute which gave the Hawks the lead then scored an insurance goal of his own in the 65th minute. The win was the first for Huntingdon over Birmingham Southern in nine tries during its time as an NCAA member. WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Anna Rae Porcelli, Greensboro - The Wilmington, North Carolina senior forward tallied three goals in a 3-0 week for the Pride. In a  5-1 win over Bob Jones, Porcelli tallied two goals, the game's first and third scores. In a 4-0 victory over Southern Virginia, Porcelli scored an insurance goal in the 15th minute. Finally, in a 4-0 win over Emory & Henry, Porcelli was held scoreless on six shots. Also Nominated: Gabby Bosak, Pfeiffer; Kirsten Clancy, Averett; Kyra Duble, Covenant; Taylor Frizen, Maryville; Myah Johnson, Agnes Scott; Ellie Montes, Salem; Makayla Taylor, Mary Baldwin; Bailee Vanover, Berea; Mandy Weinhart, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Victoria Cruz, Agnes Scott - The Duncanville, Texas first-year goalkeeper posted a 2-0 record last week for the Scotties. In 180 minutes in goal, cruz stopped 15 out of 17 shots she faced. In a 1-0 win over William Peace, Cruz recorded her first career shutout with three saves. In a 3-2 victory over Salem, Cruz made 12 saves. Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Myah Johnson, Agnes Scott - The Pepperell, Massachusetts first-year forward tallied three goals in a 2-0 week for the Scotties. In a 1-0 win over William Peace, Johnson was held scoreless on seven shots. In a 3-2 win over Salem, Johnson recorded her first career hat trick by scoring all three of the team's goals, including the game-winner in the 87th minute. Volleyball Player of the Week
Alonna Clouse, Pfeiffer - The sophomore outside hitter from Harrisburg, North Carolina averaged 4.56 kills, with a hitting percentage of .310, and 2.33 digs per set as the Falcons posted a 2-1 record last week. In a 3-0 loss to Guilford, Clouse tallied 14 kills, six digs and one assist. In a 3-0 victory over Agnes Scott, Clouse notched 16 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Berea, Clouse totaled 11 kills, eight digs, one assist and one service ace. Bergin Gillespie, William Peace - The junior defensive specialist from Dumfries, Virginia averaged 6.22 digs and 1.00 assists per set as the Pacers posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Marian, Gillespie totaled 22 digs, three assists, three service aces and one kill. In a 3-0 win over Rockford, Gillespie posted 19 digs, two assists and one kill. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Lewis & Clark, Gillespie contributed 15 digs, four assists and one service ace. Adrienne Roberts, Berea - The freshman setter from Kapolei, Hawaii averaged 9.67 kills, 1.17 digs and 1.00 kills per set as the Mountaineers posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 3-0 loss to Pfeiffer, Roberts tallied 26 assists, three digs and two kills. In a 3-0 win over Agnes Scott, Roberts totaled 32 assists, seven digs, four kills and one service ace. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Gavin Morgan, Brevard - The sophomore from Hayesville, North Carolina placed seventh out of 53 runners at the Tusculum University Zaxby's Open last week. Morgan completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:08. Also Nominated: Michael Eudy, Pfeiffer; Connor Hayes, N.C. Wesleyan; Chandler Lowell, Averett; Bryan Storie, LaGrange.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Chandler Lowell, Averett - The freshman from Newport News, Virginia placed 20th out of 83 runners at the Catawba Fleet Feet Invitational last week. Lowell completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 28:48 helping the Cougars to an eighth place team finish. Also Nominated: Michael Eudy, Pfeiffer; Enock Ruto, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Julie Tonon, Meredith - The freshman from Morrisville, North Carolina placed 17th out of 87 runners at the Catawba Fleet Feet Invitational last week. Tonon completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 22:07, helping the Avenging Angels sixth place team finish. Also Nominated: Alyson Hanlon, Pfeiffer; Jessica Bailey, Salem; Cedara Franklin, N.C. Wesleyan; Sydney Fryman, Averett.
