Methodist Captures USA South Women's Soccer Crown
(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - The 2022 USA South Women's Soccer Tournament championship took place on the campus of Methodist University on Saturday, November 5 as Methodist defeated Southern Virginia, 3-1, to capture the crown for the third time in program history, the first since 2017.
Methodist struck first as Laura Harris scored in the 11th minute thanks to an assist from Tatiana Lourenco-Shiber. Southern Virginia answered right back just over a minute later with a goal from Gabriella Ray to tie the match, 1-1. With just under ten minutes remaining in the first half, the Monarchs took the halftime lead on a goal from Lourenco-Shiber off of a Corrine Shovlain assist. The defenses stiffened in the second half before Shovlain converted a late penalty kick to finish off the scoring for Methodist. In goal, Carolina Simpkins came in the second half for Methodist and pitched the shutout to secure the Monarch win.
