2023 USA South Volleyball Awards Announced

The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2023 All-Conference awards for volleyball. Individually, the Greensboro duo of Payton Shiflet and Morgan Mayfield were named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively, while Methodist's Blake O'Brien earned Libero of the Year honors and Meredith's Fiona Barkley collected Coach of the Year accolades. Additionally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school who their coach felt displayed the best sportsmanship this season.

All awards are voted on by the volleyball coach at each institution.

Shiflet, a sophomore outside hitter from Asheboro, North Carolina becomes the fifth, and first since 2005, Greensboro student-athlete to be named USA South Player of the Year in the sport of volleyball. Shiflet is just the third player in USA South volleyball history to be named USA South Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in consecutive seasons. During the regular season, Shiflet led the League in offense averaging 5.10 points and 4.64 kills per set while also contributing 3.73 digs per set, which ranked sixth. Against USA South opponents, Shiflet again led the way in the per set categories of points (5.13) and kills (4.66) to go along with the sixth-best average of digs per set (3.80). Shiflet collects First Team All-Conference accolades for the second consecutive season to go along with being named USA South Player of the Week twice during the fall.

Mayfield, a freshman libero from Mt. Airy, North Carolina, becomes the ninth, and second consecutive (Shiflet), Greensboro student-athlete to be named USA South Rookie of the Year in the sport of volleyball. At the conclusion of the regular season, Mayfield led all rookies and was second in the League averaging 5.21 digs per set while her 0.52 service aces per set ranked third in the Conference. Against League foes-only, Mayfield sat second in the USA South in both the per set categories of digs (5.72) and service aces (0.60). For her efforts this season, Mayfield received Second Team All-Conference honors while being named USA South Defensive Player of the Week twice and Rookie of the Week three times.

O'Brien, a senior libero from St. Louis, Missouri becomes the second Methodist student-athlete to be named USA South Libero of the Year (Karly Klimas, 2015). O'Brien led the Conference with 603 total digs, 72 more than the player sitting in second, and a 6.09 digs per set average during the regular season. Additionally, O'Brien contributed 105 assists which was good for 1.06 per set. Against Conference foes this fall, O'Brien led the League in total digs (421) and digs per set (5.93). Finally, O'Brien was selected as a Second Team All-Conference honoree and named USA South Defensive Player of the Week four times.

Barkley, in the 16th year leading Meredith, earns her second USA South Volleyball Coach of the Year honor. After the coaches in their preseason USA South poll selected Meredith to place fourth, the Avenging Angels posted a 16-2 mark in Conference play to earn the program's third USA South regular season title. Since USA South preseason coaches polls began in 2003, no team picked lower than third had ever won a regular season championship. Additionally, the 16 wins in League play tie the program record set in 2014. Overall, Meredith concluded the regular season with a 22-6 overall record which included 12 straight victories.
