In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed, "Pennies for a Purpose", in 2008. This year's community service initiative, in its 15th year, began as the student-athletes returned from winter break. The schools had until April 20th to collect loose change which would later be donated to an organization of their choosing.
Overall, the USA South institutions collected $6,977.36 during this year's competition, an average of $697.73 per school. Over the life of the initiative, $138,717.55 have been donated to local organizations by Conference members!
With a grand total of $1,864.89, William Peace is the Pennies for a Purpose champion for the second consecutive year, its third title all-time (2008, 2022, 2023). Methodist raised $1,496.56 to finish second and Pfeiffer was third with $1,193.84 collected. Additionally, seven institutions (Brevard, Greensboro, Mary Baldwin, Methodist, N.C. Wesleyan, Salem, Southern Virginia) improved on their totals from last year while Brevard and Southern Virginia set program-records.
This is the second community service program developed by the USA South Conference SAAC as the "Cans Across the Conference" food drive, which takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday, was created in 2004. Through that campaign, USA South Institutions have donated a total of 617,527 items to their local communities. Pfeiffer was victorious in that competition for the first time by collecting 14,297 items.
