USA South Athletes of the Week - September 9, 2024

  • Football Offensive Player of the Week
    Anthony Byrd, N.C. Wesleyan - The Rose Hill, North Carolina senior running back scored three touchdowns in a 41-29 loss at Averett last week. On the ground, Byrd rushed for a game-high 192 yards on 21 carries (9.1 average) and scored twice. Additionally, Byrd caught four passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.     Football Defensive Player of the Week
    Tyler Bost, Maryville - The Knoxville, Tennessee senior linebacker totaled a game-high nine tackles in a season-opening, 23-9, win over Sewanee last week. Bost notched four solo tackles with five assisted take downs in the victory. Also Nominated: Dee Gray, Belhaven; JaJuan Givens, Greensboro.

    Football Special Teams Player of the Week
    Brandon Matson, LaGrange - The Apopka, Florida junior punter averaged 40.6 yards per attempt in a 57-12 loss to East Texas Baptist last week. Matson punted seven times with a long of 50 yards. Also Nominated: None.

  • Men's Soccer Player of the Week
    Tiago Feler, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior midfielder from Buenos Aires, Argentina scored twice last week as the Battling Bishops posted a 1-0-1 record. In a 1-0 win over Bethel (MN), Feler did not score but managed four shots. In a 2-2 draw with Loras, Feler scored both N.C. Wesleyan goals, including one in the 69th minute to tie the game.     Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Rafa Quevodo-Antunez, William Peace - The Raleigh, North Carolina freshman goalkeeper posted two shutouts in two games last week for the Pacers. In two scoreless draws against Bridgewater and Randolph, Quevodo-Antunez made three total saves. Also Nominated: Cristian Del Cid, Greensboro; Silas Hartkaemper, N.C. Wesleyan; Nick Cutlip, Pfeiffer; Zach Bartholomew, Southern Virginia.

    Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week*
    Cameron Lambert, Methodist - The Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman forward scored his first collegiate goal, which just happened to be a game-winner, last week as the Monarchs posted a 1-1 record. In a 2-1 victory over Hood, Lambert put the Monarchs ahead for good in the 67th minute with his first goal of the season. In a 2-1 loss to Shenandoah, Lambert was held scoreless with one shot.   • Women's Soccer Player of the Week*
    Mikayla Zvekan, Brevard - The Draper, Utah junior forward scored four goals and added three assists in a 3-0 week for the Tornados. In a 6-0 win over Agnes Scott, Zvekan scored the first goal of the match, the eventual game-winner, to go along with two assists. In a 4-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite, Zvekan tallied one goal. Finally, in an 11-0 win over Hollins, Zvekan scored twice with one assist on the eventual game-winning goal.     Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Khaliah Jones, Meredith - The Sanford, North Carolina graduate student posted two wins, including one shutout, last week for the Avenging Angels. In victories over LaGrange and Huntingdon, Jones totaled six saves including stopped both shots against LaGrange to get a shutout. Also Nominated: Katrina Gardner, Southern Virginia; Kaylee Ollis, Pfeiffer; Gaby Vazquez, William Peace; Nicole Arroyo, Brevard; Alicia Harp, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Mikayla Rubin, Brevard - The Boynton Beach, Florida freshman forward scored five goals with three assists in a 3-0 week for the Tornados. In a 6-0 win over Agnes Scott, Rubin scored once with an assist. In a 4-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite, Rubin tallied one goal. Finally, in an 11-0 win over Hollins, Rubin set a new single-game program point record with eight thanks to three goals and two assists, including the eventual game-winning score.     Jeanana Fowler, Methodist - The senior middle hitter from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina averaged 4.40 kills per set with a .458 hitting percentage as the Monarchs posted a 4-0 record last week with wins over Ferrum, Randolph, Hollins, and Roanoke. Fowler posted week match-highs of 29 kills, six blocks, one assist, and one dig (twice). Also Nominated: Sydney Bassett, Southern Virginia; Emma Duncan, Meredith; Anna Rymer, Salem; Ashley Hoxit, Brevard; Haedyn McGrath, Pfeiffer; Aajah Vazquez, N.C.     Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
    Morgan Mayfield, Greensboro - The sophomore libero from Mt. Airy, North Carolina averaged 6.27 digs per set as the Pride posted a 2-2 record last week with wins over Hollins and Ferrum with losses to Roanoke and Randolph. Mayfield had week match-highs of 45 digs, seven assists, three service aces (twice), and two kills. Also Nominated: Bailey Lance, Brevard; Gracie Fulton, Southern Virginia; Blake O'Brien, Methodist; Jordan Juanes, William Peace; Gabby Edwards, Pfeiffer.

    Volleyball Rookie of the Week
    Maia Johnson, Salem - The freshman middle blocker from Mineral Wells, West Virginia averaged 3.00 kills per set with a .398 hitting percentage as the Spirits posted a 4-0 record with wins over Randolph, Ferrum, N.C. Wesleyan, and Hollins. Johnson posted week match-highs of 15 kills, four blocks, three digs, and one assist. Also Nominated: Larkin Baxley, Greensboro; Jordyn Chinigo, William Peace; Carlyn Tanis, Methodist; Izzy Boulay, Brevard; Summer Hahn, Southern Virginia.

  • Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
    Sawyer Helms, Pfeiffer - The Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina junior placed ninth out of 66 runners at the Catawba Fleet Feet Invitational last week. Helms completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:35. Also Nominated: Zak Gumaya, Greensboro; Jack Barriger, Methodist.

    Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
    Bricen Burleson, Pfeiffer - The China Grove, North Carolina freshman placed 27th out of 66 runners at the Fleet Feet Invitational last week. Burleson completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 28:14. Also Nominated: Zak Gumaya, Greensboro.

  • Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
    Delaney Bundy, Meredith - The Cary, North Carolina sophomore placed 14th out of 48th runners at the UNC-Wilmington Beach Blast last week. Bundy completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:13. Also Nominated: Channing Barker, Brevard; Grace Dobson, Greensboro; Emma Wilson, Methodist; Maddie Hladik, Pfeiffer.

    Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
    Ryan Germain, Pfeiffer - The Newport, North Carolina freshman placed 24th out of 44 runners at the Catawba Fleet Feet Invitational last week. Germain completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 22:05. Also Nominated: McKenzie Koos, Greensboro; Ashleigh Modlin, Meredith; Emma Wilson, Methodist.
