Former NCWU Baseball Coach Inducted into College Baseball Hall of Fame

Overland Park, KS – Mike Fox, one of the most decorated coaches in college baseball history and a legend at North Carolina Wesleyan, was officially enshrined into the College Baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday, February 13th at the Night of Champions ceremony in Overland Park, Kansas. Fox was honored alongside six other baseball greats, including MLB All-Stars Mike Schmidt, Roger Clemens, and Mark Teixeira.

Fox's induction serves as a fitting kickoff to the 2025 college baseball season. By the time he retired in 2020, Fox had amassed an extraordinary 1,487-547-5 record (.731 winning percentage) over a 37-year head coaching career. His tenure at N.C. Wesleyan spanned 15 seasons, highlighted by the 1989 NCAA Division III National Championship. Under his leadership, the Battling Bishops earned 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Division III College World Series berths, 11 Dixie Conference titles, and 15 consecutive top-20 national finishes. His 539-141-4 record (.791 winning percentage) at Wesleyan ranked second among active Division III coaches at the time.

Fox went on to coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, where he became the winningest coach in Tar Heel baseball history with a 948-406-1 record. His teams reached the College World Series seven times, including back-to-back championship round appearances in 2006 and 2007, and won three ACC championships (2007, 2013, 2018). Under Fox, UNC players earned 32 All-America honors, 37 first-team All-ACC selections, and produced 27 Major Leaguers.

In attendance to celebrate Fox's momentous night were several members of the N.C. Wesleyan family. Senior Woman Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director Carol Carson, a 37-year veteran of NCWU Athletics, praised Fox's impact: "Being here to witness Coach Fox receive this well-deserved honor was truly special. His dedication to his players and this university has left an incredible legacy. It's an experience I'll cherish forever."

Sports Information Director Bayden Collins, who previously served as Wesleyan's Director of Baseball Operations and shares a close friendship with Fox, reflected on the night: "Coach Fox isn't just a coaching legend—he's someone who cares deeply about people. Seeing him honored alongside baseball icons was inspiring, and being part of that celebration is something I'll never forget. His influence stretches far beyond the diamond."

Rachel Dix, a 2008 NCWU Hall of Famer and longtime supporter of Wesleyan Athletics, also attended the event. Dix, whose decades-long commitment to NCWU includes serving as the inaugural Athletics Contributor honoree, shared in the celebration with former Bishop players, affectionately known as the "Bishop Boys of the '80s," who reunited to honor their former coach.

Reflecting on the significance of the evening, Fox said, "At the end of the day, people won't remember how many games you won or lost. It's about the relationships you build along the way. Standing here, surrounded by so many former players and members of the Bishop family, is the greatest honor I could ever ask for."

Fox joins an elite 2024 College Baseball Hall of Fame class that includes Mike Schmidt (Ohio University), Roger Clemens (San Jacinto JC/University of Texas), Mark Teixeira (Georgia Tech), Bill Thom (USC), Jeff King (Arkansas), Woody Hunt (Cumberland University), Murray Wall (University of Texas), Wilbert Ellis (Grambling State), Randy Ross (North Park University), and Jim Paronto (Umpire/Administrator).

Since its inception in 2006, the College Baseball Hall of Fame has honored the game's most impactful players, coaches, umpires, and contributors. Fox's induction cements his legacy as one of the all-time greats in college baseball history.
