Southern Virginia Captures USA South Women's Basketball Championship

(BUENA VISTA, Va.) - The 2025 USA South Women's Basketball Tournament championship took place on the campus of Southern Virginia University on Saturday, March 1 as the top-seeded, host, Knights earned the League tournament title  for the second consecutive year by defeating second-seeded Brevard, 57-45.

The Tornados scored the first five points of the game but it was the Knights who finished the first quarter strong, closing it out on a 7-0 run to take a 17-11 lead after the first stanza. Southern Virginia kept the pressure on the next ten minutes, building its lead to 11 points (30-19) into the halftime break. The Knights extended their lead in the third quarter thanks to a three-point advantage and headed into the final ten minutes with a 47-33 lead. The fourth quarter saw Southern Virginia hold the pace it had established throughout the game en route to securing the championship.

Southern Virginia's Addison Newman led all scorers with 22 points, sinking a game-high five three-pointers, to go along with five rebounds and one steal. With her efforts during the entire tournament, Newman earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors for the second consecutive season, just the second player in League history to accomplish that feat. Alyssa Weiland was the only other Knight in double figures with 12 points while Ruth Kempler grabbed a game-high ten rebounds and Abigail Snyder dished out a game-best seven assists.

Makenna Parkins led the Tornados in scoring with 15 points to go with seven rebounds, two steals, and one block while Lexi Shepard added nine points and eight rebounds.
