Lexington, VA - The North Carolina Wesleyan women's tennis team opened the 2025 NCAA Division III Tournament with an impressive 4-1 win over Asbury University on Friday morning at the Upper Courts on the campus of Washington and Lee University.
The Battling Bishops (10-6) jumped out to an early lead by dominating doubles play. Bethan Fothergill and Renata Torres earned a quick 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Andrea Elaez Miranda and Ivanna Torres also cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles to secure the point. Play at No. 3 doubles was left unfinished with Melanie Guzman Gonzalez and Linda Nhiwatiwa leading 5-2 before the match was halted.
In singles action, Renata Torres continued the momentum with a commanding 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 to give the Bishops a 2-0 advantage. Asbury (13-5) claimed its lone point at No. 3 singles, where Martina Paillet outlasted Ivanna Torres in three sets.
However, the Bishops quickly responded. Bethan Fothergill battled back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles, and Andrea Elaez Miranda clinched the match moments later with a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to send Wesleyan into the second round.
Matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were left unfinished once the team victory was secured.
North Carolina Wesleyan advances to face Emory in the second round on Saturday.
