USA South Athletes of the Week - April 20, 2026

  • Baseball Player of the Week
    Israel Ortiz, Methodist - The senior outfielder from Wade, North Carolina went a combined 8-for-16 (.500) with a .619 on-base percentage, and a 1.063 slugging percentage to go along with nine runs scored, eight RBI, three doubles, two home runs, six walks, and one stolen base as the Monarchs went 2-2 last week. In a 15-1 loss to second-ranked Lynchburg, Ortiz was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one double. In taking two out of three games from USA South foe Pfeiffer, Ortiz was a combined 7-for-13 with eight runs scored, eight RBI, one double, two home runs, six walks, and one stolen base. In game-three alone, Ortiz was 4-for-5 with five runs scored and six RBI while hitting two home runs in the same inning.     Baseball Rookie of the Week
    Tyler Bales, Southern Virginia - The freshman second baseman from Keller, Texas went a combined 6-for-13 (.462) with a .462 on-base percentage, and a .538 slugging percentage to go along with one run scored, one run batted in, and one double as the Knights went 1-2 against USA South foe Greensboro last week.     Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
    Isaiah Ralls, Greensboro - The freshman from Spartanburg, South Carolina earned a win in his only appearance, a start, last week for the Pride. In a 9-6 win over USA South foe Southern Virginia, Ralls tossed six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with zero walks and four strikeouts. Also Nominated: None.

    Ashbee Standridge, Meredith - The junior first baseman from Creedmoor, North Carolina went a combined 5-for-8 (.625) with a .625 on-base percentage, and a 1.500 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, one triple, and one home run as the Avenging Angels swept a doubleheader from USA South foe Southern Virginia Also Nominated: Landry Stewart, Pfeiffer; Emmaline Degroot, Southern Virginia; Anna Frazier, Greensboro; Alyssa Boris, Brevard; Brooke Markiewicz, N.C.     Abigail Bowman, Pfeiffer - The freshman from Lenoir, North Carolina appeared in three games, all starts, and earned a 2-0 record last week for the Falcons against USA South foes. In 13.2 innings pitched, Bowman posted a 0.00 ERA while allowing two unearned runs on three hits with one walk and ten strikeouts. In a 10-2 win over William Peace, Bowman tossed all five innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. In a 11-4 victory over Methodist, Bowman became the first Falcon pitcher in known history to toss a seven-inning perfect game. She retired all 21 batters faced while striking out six.     Heather Vaughn, Pfeiffer - The freshman utility player from Eli Whitney, North Carolina went a combined 7-for-15 (.467) with a .500 on-base percentage, and a .533 slugging percentage to go along with five runs scored, five RBI, one double, one walk, and three stolen bases in a 4-0 week for the Falcons against USA South foes. In a doubleheader sweep of William Peace, Vaughn was a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored, four RBI, and one double.     Noah McGriff, Piedmont - The junior attackman from Cumming, Georgia totaled 15 points on 12 goals and three assists with seven ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Lions against USA South rivals. In a 22-10 win at Huntingdon, McGriff scored six times with one assist and two ground balls. In a 20-7 victory over Greensboro, McGriff notched four goals with a career-high five assist to go along with five ground balls.     Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
    John Dieterly, Piedmont - The junior faceoff specialist from Asheville, North Carolina was 35-of-48 (.729) at the “X” with 20 ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Lions against USA South rivals. In a 22-10 win at Huntingdon, Dieterly was 15-of-22 in faceoffs with eight ground balls. In a 20-7 victory over Greensboro, Dieterly won a season-high 20 faceoffs while losing just six to go along with grabbing 12 ground balls. notched four goals with a career-high five assist to go along with five ground balls.     Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
    Grady Eyler, Piedmont - The freshman attackman from Haymarket, North Carolina scored eight goals in a 2-0 week for the Lions against USA South rivals. In each game, a 22-10 win at Huntingdon and a 20-7 victory over Greensboro, Eyler scored four goals.   • Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
    Reese Walker, Meredith - The senior attacker from Fayetteville, North Carolina totaled 29 points on 12 goals and 17 assists to go along with nine ground balls, four caused turnovers, and one draw control in a 3-0 week for the Avenging Angels against USA South foes. In a 24-1 win over Pfeiffer, Walker scored six goals with four assists, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. In a 20-4 victory at Piedmont, Walker totaled four goals, three assists, three ground balls, and one draw control. Finally, in a 23-0 shutout of Brevard, Walker scored twice with ten assists, two ground balls, and one caused turnover.     Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
    Bailey Swails, Meredith - The junior midfielder from Wilmington, North Carolina totaled eight caused turnovers, seven ground balls, and 18 draw controls to go along with eight goals and one assist in a 3-0 week for the Avenging Angels against USA South foes. In a 24-1 win over Pfeiffer, Swails caused two turnovers, grabbed two ground balls, collected seven draw controls while scoring two goals. In a 20-4 victory at Piedmont, Swails totaled three caused turnovers, two ground balls, eight draw controls, and five goals. Finally, in a 23-0 shutout of Brevard, Swails contributed three caused turnovers, ground balls, and draw controls to go along with one goal scored.     Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
    Quinn Branca, Pfeiffer - The freshman midfielder from Mays Landing, New Jersey scored five goals with seven ground balls, seven draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a 1-1 week for the Falcons against USA South foes. In a 24-1 loss to Meredith, Branca scored the team's only goal while grabbing four ground balls and three draw controls. In a 24-5 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Branca scored four times with four draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.   • Men's Tennis Player of the Week
    Matthew Hurley, Methodist - The senior from Faulconbridge, New South Wales, Australia posted a 2-1 singles record with a 3-0 doubles mark last week for the Monarchs. In singles, at the number-one spot, Hurley earned wins over opponents from USA South foes Southern Virginia and Brevard with a loss to Montreat. In doubles, Hurley teamed with Decklan Rayner to grab the three wins at the number-one position. Also Nominated: Ben Russell, N.C. Wesleyan; Aissultan Mukhambetov, Pfeiffer.

    Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
    Valter Albuquerque, Pfeiffer - The freshman from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil posted a singles and doubles win, both at the number-one spots, in his only matches last week for the Falcons against USA South rival Southern Virginia. Albuquerque teamed with Jayden Wellman to grab the victory. Also Nominated: Indrek Raudkivi, N.C. Wesleyan; Aaron Zoubek, Methodist.

    Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
    Matthew Hurley and Decklan Rayner, Methodist - The Monarch duo earned a 3-0 record at the number-one spot last week with wins over opponents from USA South foes Southern Virginia and Brevard as well as Montreat. Also Nominated: Adam Singleton and Albert Sitwell, N.C. Wesleyan; Valter Albuquerque and Jayden Wellman, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Emma Hulicki, Methodist - The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina earned a 2-0 record at both number-one singles and doubles last week for the Monarchs with wins over USA South foe Southern Virginia as well as Montreat. Hulicki teamed with Shea Bieniek to win both matches. Also Nominated: Haley Ingenito, Pfeiffer; Andrea Elaez Miranda, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
    Shea Bieniek, Methodist - The freshman from Fayetteville, North Carolina posted a 2-0 record in both singles and doubles last week for the Monarchs with wins over USA South foe Southern Virginia as well as Montreat. In singles, Bieniek earned the wins at number-four while teaming with Emma Hulicki at number-one doubles. Also Nominated: BreAnn Ferguson, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
    Bethan Fothergill and Renata Torres, N.C. Wesleyan - The Battling Bishop duo earned a 6-2 win over USA South foe Southern Virginia at the number-one position in their only match last week. Also Nominated: Shea Bieniek and Emma Hulicki, Methodist; Riley Isley and Kristen Colie, Pfeiffer.

  • Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
    Cameron Ritchie, Pfeiffer - The junior from Salisbury, North Carolina competed in two events at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational last week. In the 110-meter hurdles, Ritchie finished in a time of 15.53 while completing the 400-meter hurdles in 55.78. Also Nominated: Joseph Hughes, Southern Virginia.

    Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week
    Drake Stewart, Pfeiffer - The sophomore from Greenville, South Carolina competed in three field events at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational last week. In the long jump and the triple jump Stewart set program records by leaping 7.07 meters and 13.57 meters, respectively. Stewart also participated in the high jump with a best-effort of 1.97 meters.     Men's Outdoor Track Rookie of the Week
    Ja'mes Lysiuk, Pfeiffer - The freshman from Holly Springs, North Carolina competed in two events at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational last week. In the 1,500 meters, Lysiuk finished in a time of 4:10.60 while completing the 800 meters in 2:01.72. Also Nominated: John Rocendo, Southern Virginia.

    Men's Outdoor Field Rookie of the Week
    Rahnier Lyons, Pfeiffer - The freshman from Ocracoke Island, North Carolina competed in the discus at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational last week with a best-effort of 38.12 meters. Also Nominated: Madsen Richardson, Southern Virginia.
