(Misenheimer, N.C. & Raleigh, N.C.) - The USA South Softball four-team double-elimination tournaments have concluded with top-seeded Pfeiffer and third-seeded N.C. Wesleyan advancing to the best-of-three championship series in a rematch of last year's tournament title tilt, won by the Falcons.
At Pfeiffer, the host Falcons needed to win both games against fourth-seeded Greensboro and that is exactly what they did. In the first game, Pfeiffer scored early and often, putting up three runs in each of the first two innings en route to an 8-0, five-inning, win. In the second game, a two-run inside-the-park home run gave Pfeiffer a 2-0 advantage in the second inning which it held onto for a 3-1 victory.
At Meredith, the host Avenging Angels could only manage one of the two wins they needed against N.C. Wesleyan. In the first game, a three-run double in the second inning was all Meredith needed in a 3-1 victory. In the second contest, the Avenging Angels took a one-run lead into the top of the seventh, only to see it vanish when the Battling Bishops scored a game-tying run. The game would go into extra innings as N.C. Wesleyan got a two-out single in the top of the eighth inning and held Meredith scoreless in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1, eight-inning, win.
The best-of-three championship series, which will be hosted by Pfeiffer as the highest-remaining seed after the four-team tournaments, is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 8. The first day will consist of a doubleheader followed by, if needed, a third, and deciding, game the following day, Saturday, May 9.
Pfeiffer will look to earn the program's fourth consecutive USA South Tournament championship while N.C. Wesleyan seeks its sixth all-time title but first since 1999.
