(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - Each year the USA South Athletic Conference
presents its most prestigious awards by honoring one male and one
female as the Student-Athletes of the Year. These student-athletes
are recognized as recipients of the Don Scalf Award. The 2013
winners are Mary Baldwin College cross country runner
Sophia Stone and Christopher Newport University
golfer Brian Jaeger.
To be eligible for the Don Scalf Award a student-athlete must be
either a junior or senior, have participated in a USA South sport
earning at least All-Conference recognition and have a minimum 3.00
GPA. The athletic directors vote for the award winner each spring
at the conclusion of all Conference schedules.
This award is named in honor of Don Scalf, whose commitment to
the student-athlete, guardianship of the value of academic
achievement and devotion to the principles of Division III
athletics set a standard that holds steadfast in the Conference
today. He taught for 36 years and coached for 18 at N.C. Wesleyan
College. He also served as Athletic Director at N.C. Wesleyan for
six years. During his coaching career his teams won Dixie
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball and golf
championships. In addition, he was a founding father of the DIAC in
1963 and served as its Secretary-Treasurer for 25 years.
Sophia Stone - Mary Baldwin College
Stone concluded her junior season this past fall when she placed
19th at the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships.
With the finish, she earned All-American honors for the second
consecutive season. She is the two-time defending USA South and
NCAA South/Southeast Regional Champion. Stone has earned USA South
Runner of the Year honors twice, is a three-time member of the
All-Conference First Team and currently owns the Conference
Championship course record. In the classroom, Stone has compiled a
3.98 grade point average while majoring in Psychology and Biology.
She is a three-time member of the USA South All-Academic Team and a
two-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. Stone has
been awarded the Mary Jane Donnalley Scholar Athlete honor twice
and recently earned accolades in both the psychology and biology
departments on campus. Additionally, she is the president and
founder of the Mary Baldwin chapter of "Let's Erase the Stigma"
which is a nonprofit children’s charity dedicated to erasing
the stigma of mental illness. Finally, Stone is her team's
representative on Mary Baldwin's Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC).
Brian Jaeger - Christopher Newport
University
Jaeger's collegiate career came to a close this spring at the NCAA
Division III Men's Golf National Championship. He qualified as an
individual and placed tied for 12th which earned him PING First
Team All-American accolades, becoming the first Captain to earn the
honor since 1994. In 2013, Jaeger also collected First Team
All-Region, First Team All-Conference and USA South All-Tournament
Team accolades. Prior to this season, Jaeger was a three-time
All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Off the course, he
compiled a 3.72 grade point average while majoring in Business
Marketing. Jaeger received his fourth consecutive USA South
All-Academic Team accolade this season and earned CoSIDA Third Team
Academic All-American honors. He was also named a First Team
Academic All-District selection and was one of the inaugural
inductees into the Virginia Theta chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, the
National College Athlete Honor Society. Finally, for the second
consecutive season, Jaeger was named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon
All-American Scholar Honor Team.
