Announces 2013 Woman of the Year

(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors student-athletes for their collegiate achievements in service, leadership, athletics and academics. The USA South Athletic Conference's 2013 Woman of the Year and nominee for the NCAA award is Christopher Newport University senior women's lacrosse player Stephanie Green.

Green concluded her collegiate career this past spring as a starting defender on the Captain women's lacrosse team. She was a two-time All-Conference performer and a two-time member of the USA South All-Tournament Team. Green helped CNU to a Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship in each of her four seasons. She currently is the program record holder for most career games played with 73 and ranks in the program's top-ten in groundballs and caused turnovers. Finally, in 2010, Green earned All-Conference All-Sportsmanship Team accolades.

Off the court, Green has amassed a 3.92 GPA while majoring in Neuroscience and graduated Summa Cum Laude this past spring. She has appeared on the USA South All-Academic All-Conference Team each of her four years on campus and was named the CNU Female Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 academic season. Green is a member of four different honor societies and was awarded the Dean's Service Award in the spring of 2013.

Green's service and leadership resume is a very impressive one. She has committed approximately 400 hours to projects and organizations both on the Christopher Newport campus and within the city of Newport News, Virginia. The majority of her time was dedicated to founding and leading the AdaptLax program which is an organization providing athletic opportunities to those with disabilities, specifically in the sport of lacrosse. Green applied for and received $2,000 through CNU's Ferguson Fellowship Grant to help begin the program. Additionally, she has volunteered her time with Special Olympics, at hospitals, at women's clinics and during leadership camps.

This honoree's name and accolades will now be forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee. The committee will choose the top ten nominees in each division (I, II and III). From among those 30 honorees, the selection committee will determine the top three in each division. From those nine, the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year will be chosen.

Other student-athletes chosen as institutional Women of the Year were Paige Aaron of Averett University, Rachel Shumaker of Ferrum, Meredith Kelly of Greensboro College, Michelle Jones of Mary Baldwin College and Samantha Urquhart of N.C. Wesleyan.
