USA South Baseball Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for baseball. A total of 44 student-athletes have been named to the USA South All-Conference teams. Shenandoah University's Greg Van Sickler swept the Player and Pitcher of the Year awards while his coach, Kevin Anderson, has been named Coach of the Year. Methodist University teammates Sergio Davis and Michael Judge were named Rookie of the Year and Rookie Pitcher of the Year, respectfully. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All honors were determined by votes from the baseball coach at each institution.

Van Sickler, a senior from Stephenson, Virginia, becomes the first USA South baseball player to be named both Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season. At the plate, Van Sickler leads the league with a .407 batting average and a .737 slugging percentage and is ranked in the top-ten in ten other offensive categories. He has currently totaled 33 RBI, 36 runs scored, 48 hits, 12 doubles, three triples and seven home runs. In USA South-only contests, Van Sickler leads the league in runs scored, home runs, RBI, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. On the mound, this is Van Sickler's second consecutive Pitcher of the Year honor. He has posted a Conference-best 8-1 record with a league-low 1.81 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched. Van Sickler also collected two First Team All-Conference accolades this spring, one as a utility player and the other as a starting pitcher. This is the third-career first team honor for Van Sickler at the utility position and the second consecutive honor as a starting pitcher. He also collected Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades as a first baseman in 2009. Additionally, in his first season as a Hornet, Van Sickler was named the USA South Rookie of the Year. Finally, Van Sickler was named USA South Player of the Week twice and Pitcher of the Week once this spring.

Davis, a freshman outfielder from Fayetteville, North Carolina, played a key role in the Monarchs season as he is batting .366 with 26 runs scored, 17 RBI, nine doubles and one triple. He currently ranks eighth in the USA South with 45 total hits. For his efforts, Davis was named USA South Rookie of the Week three times this spring.

A freshman from Triangle, Virginia, Judge has posted a 6-2 record with a 3.38 ERA in 13 appearances, eight of which were starts. His six wins currently rank sixth in the Conference. Judge has tossed a total of 48.0 innings and allowed 16 walks with 37 strikeouts. Additionally, Judge earned USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week honors four times this spring.

In his eighth season at Shenandoah, Head Coach Kevin Anderson collects his first Coach of the Year honor. Anderson has led the Hornets to a 28-2 overall record, an 11-1 conference mark and the program's first-ever USA South Regular Season title. Additionally, the Hornets have sat atop two national Division III baseball polls for four consecutive weeks. Anderson now leads his squad into the USA South tournament as the top-seeded team.
