2019 USA South Men's Golf Awards Announced

The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2019 All-Conference awards for men's golf. Huntingdon College became just the second program in USA South golf history (Methodist, twice) to sweep all of the individual honors. Drew Mathers was named Player of the Year, Carson Whitton earned Rookie of the Year while their coach, Dave Schreyer, collected Coach of the Year accolades to wrap-up the individual awards. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All honors were determined by votes from the men's golf coach at each institution.

Mathers, a junior from Mobile, Alabama, becomes the second Hawk in three seasons (Addison Lambeth, 2017) to be named USA South Golfer of the Year. He is currently averaging a USA South-best 71.4 in 21 rounds of play, has recorded five top-ten finishes, four top-five finishes and two wins in eight events. Mathers has shot even par or better in 15 rounds with a season-low round score of 68. Mathers is currently the second ranked player in Division III according to Golfstat. For his efforts, Mathers earned First Team All-Conference honors for the first time in his career this spring and was named USA South Golfer of the Week twice.

Whitton, a freshman from Newnan, Georgia, leads all rookies with a current average score of 73.7 in 19 rounds of play which is tied for ninth-best in the League. Whitton has compiled one top-ten finish and one top-five result with a low round of 69. For his efforts, Whitton earned Second Team All-Conference honors this year. Finally, he was named USA South Rookie Golfer of the Week twice this season.

Schreyer, in his seventh year at the helm of Huntingdon, earns USA South Coach of the Year honors for the third time in four years. He has guided his team to a Conference-best 289.9 stroke average in 26 rounds this season. The Hawks have won four tournaments this year and have finished no lower than ninth in their ten events. Huntingdon climbed to as high as the top-ranked team in Golfstat's national rankings earlier this season and now sit at second as the Hawks enter the upcoming USA South Tournament as the top-seeded team.
