(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its Runner, Rookie and Coach of the Year awards for men's and women's cross country. For the women, Methodist University's Kristyn Zeiler was named Runner of the Year, Christopher Newport University's Erin Rolaf earned Rookie of the Year honors while Shenandoah University's Andrew Marrocco captured Coach of the Year accolades. On the men's side, Shenandoah swept the honors as Runner and Rookie of the Year accolades went to Josiah Renton and Ryan Taylor, respectfully, while their coach Andrew Marrocco was named Coach of the Year. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. All honors were determined by votes from the cross country coach at each institution.
Zeiler, a senior from Lutherville, Maryland, earned top female runner honors for the second consecutive season. She had a season-best time of 14:52 at the 4,000 meter UNC-Wilmington Invitational where she placed fifth overall. Additionally, Zeiler received three USA South Runner of the Week honors this fall.
A freshman from Woodbridge, Virginia, Rolaf played a key role in the Captains' successful 2010 season. She ran a season-best time of 23:03 at the 5,900 meter Salisbury Invitational, placing 20th overall. Rolaf was CNU's top runner at the Williams & Mary Invitational where she placed 18th overall, completing the 6,000 meter course in 24:08. Finally, Rolaf earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors three times this fall.
Renton, a junior from Manassas, Virginia, earns runner of the year honors after placing in the top ten in four out of five races this fall. His season-best performance was a time of 25:47 at the Salisbury Invitational where he placed tenth out of 183 runners in the 8,000 meter event. Additionally, Renton was named USA South Runner of the Week twice this season.
A Westminster, Virginia freshman, Taylor has been an integral part of the Hornets squad. His best performance of the season came at the Salisbury Invitational where he posted a time of 25:44 on the 8,000 meter course to finish 8th out of 183 runners. In his first collegiate event, a tri-meet with Hood and Eastern Mennonite, Taylor crossed the finish line in first place. Finally, Taylor was named USA South Rookie of the Week three times this fall.
Marrocco, currently in his fifth season at the helm of Shenandoah's men's and women's cross country programs, swept the coach of the year honors for the second consecutive season. Both the men and women Hornets are currently regionally ranked. On the men's side, the Hornets placed first in two events while the women placed in the top-five three times this fall.
The remainder of the both the Men's and Women's All-Conference teams will be decided at the upcoming USA South Championships. On the men's side, the all-conference team will consist of the top-15 finishers. On the women's side, there will be two teams. First team all-conference will consist of the top-15 finishers while the next ten finishers will be named second team all-conference. The Conference Championship Meet will take place on Saturday, October 30 at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, North Carolina.
