(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for football. A total of 92 student-athletes have earned All-Conference honors. Ferrum College's Marcus Mayo was named the Offensive Player of the Year while N.C. Wesleyan College's Jordan Vann earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Two of Vann's teammates swept the defensive awards as James Carter was named Defensive Player of the Year and Tazmon Foster collected Defensive Rookie of the Year accolades. Rounding out the individual awards was Christopher Newport University Head Coach Matt Kelchner who was named the Coach of the Year. The USA South also recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. Finally, all honors are determined by votes from the football coach at each institution.
Mayo, a junior quarterback from Lexington, Virginia led the Panthers passing and rushing attack this season. He averaged 137.8 passing and 42.2 rushing yards per game, which ranked in the top-seven of the USA South in each category. Mayo completed 80 passes for 1,378 yards and a totaled a league-best 22 touchdowns. In addition to his duties behind center, he also returned punts, taking three back for touchdowns this fall. For his efforts this season, Mayo was named a First Team All-Conference selection at quarterback and a Second Team All-Conference performer at return specialist. Finally, he was named USA South Special Teams Player of the Week once this fall.
Carter, a Willard, North Carolina senior defensive lineman, compiled 65 total tackles, 22 of which were for a loss, including 4.5 sacks this season for the Bishops. His sack total ranked eighth in the USA South. Carter also added three pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this fall. For his efforts, he was named a First Team All-Conference defensive lineman.
Vann, a freshman quarterback from Fayetteville, North Carolina, led the USA South in a number of categories. His completions, completion percentage, passing yards and passing yards per game were all league-highs. Vann compiled a 62.4 completion percentage while throwing for 1,951 yards and eight touchdowns. On the ground, Vann averaged 31.5 rushing yards per game and scored three touchdowns. For his efforts this season, he was a Second Team All-Conference selection at quarterback and earned USA South Offensive Rookie of the Week honors five times.
Foster, a freshman linebacker from Henderson, North Carolina, led all USA South rookies with 98 total tackles. His 42 solo takedowns ranked fourth in the Conference while his 56 assisted tackles were good for second this fall. Foster also contributed 14 tackles for a loss, including two sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. His efforts this season earned him First Team All-Conference honors at linebacker. Additionally, Foster earned USA South Defensive Rookie of the Week accolades four times this season.
Kelchner collects his fifth Conference Coach of the Year honor. He led the Captains to a 6-4 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the USA South which earned CNU a share of its seventh conference championship. Kelchner now leads the Captains into NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in the program's ten years of existence.
